Hennessey 6 No chance with the goal. Nice save 1st half.

Ward 6 At times poor. Like the rest of the team gave the ball away. Grew as the game went on. Lots of attacks down that flank for us.
Tomkins 8 MOTM I'm a fan. He formed a great partnership with Sakho. Made a vital interception before we scored the winner. Best of the defenders.
Sakho 7 Delighted he scored. Mostly good but gave the ball away twice in dandgerous places.
Schlupp 6 Had a tough job against Shaquiri and Chopo Moting but did Ok.

Zaha 6 Mostly kept quiet. However, he played his part with our winner.
Milivojevic 6 Got better as the game went on. Started to impose himself physically. Some poor passes.
Cabaye 7 Our best passer. Made the winner. Great that he found space.
McArthur 6 Good effort well saved by Grant. Didn't get into the game. Subbed at half time.
Townsend 6 Made the 1st goal. Struggled to get into the game. Always looked to be assertive and make something happen
Loftus Cheek 7 Nice goal at the perfect time. Had a lot of joy down the wing in the 1st half. Just wish he wouldn't turn back-go for goal.

Subs:
Benteke 6 Unlucky with his chance. Won some headers.

Wilf needs to be out wide, causes far more havoc out wide.
Cabaye is in fine form.
Full backs are both weak spots, TFM in for Ward, no idea about left back.
No doubting that RLC is a good player but he goes missing to much, want to see him drag us along.
Benteke looked better the longer he was on.

That game was almost laughably bad at times. Shocking. Still, a win is a win.

That was not a good game. Both teams were poor but it feels good to win after playing bad and especially after being 1-0 down in the second half. Got to say I do not like Hodgson’s tactics right now. Looks like we’re putting square pegs in round holes. Why Zaha is being asked to play in the middle of an attack I don’t know. He even lost the ball there for the goal. McArthur out on the left, Loftus-Cheek wasted on the right. 4 centre mids in a flat bank 4 man midfield doesn’t work I don’t think and 2 wingers acting as strikers needs to stop.

Hennessey actually did well today especially with the save in the first half.
Ward confuses me. He makes a good assist last week by doing the right cross as the strikers last week can’t head a ball and then this week he starts putting it in the air again. Rather Fosu-Mensah
Tomkins was our best player today
Sakho will either win or lose you a game. Passing has been poor recently
Schlupp had a better game but still doesn’t know what’s over his shoulder and allows to cross usually
Milivojevic passing awful. Was he wearing clogs?
Cabaye class again
McArthur pretty quiet
Loftus-Cheek wasted on the right pretty poor today
Zaha was our least effective player
Townsend pretty quiet too
Benteke won headers that he shouldn’t have and made good lay offs. Poor with his feet but hopefully that comes with match fitness.

So good to win a game

Tompkins was great, Sakho very good in the second half so long as he didn't need to pick a pass. Players were lining up to tap in his winner.

RLC was dangerous but gave away posession far to often - at one point in the first half he lost us the ball three times in quick sucession. This game was characterised by some poor, frantic decision making by palace players with the ball in attacking positions. I take it to be due to desperately wanting to make something happen. A bit more belief and patience due to this win will hopefully result in better decision making.

Every attacking threat was initiated by Zaha. When he was quiet in periods of the second half we offered nothing. Moving him to the right in the first half precipiated a period of attacking play. Playing him up with Benteke kept him quiet too whilst Benteke isn't quiet on the same page as RLC and Townsend. Some more work on the training field is needed for these five players to play well together.

Cabaye was very good today in both keeping posession and maintaining some rythm and control in our posession, he worked very hard. Luka good in the second half.

Ward is safe. Never puts a foot wrong and is massively underrated on here.

Very good selection by Hodgson today. It was right to drop Dann and Speroni. More work needed to transition from the Zaha-Townsend front two to the inclusion of Benteke.

Hennessy - 7 (not a lot to do, well beat for the goal & made a decent save)
Tomkins - 7 (he's starting to look like a decent centre back)
Sakho - 7.5 (does what sakho does, few sloppy passes, maurauded forward, got the winner)
Ward - 6 (still declined in seasons, fosu-mensah should be starting
Milivojevic - 5 (complete passenger, at fault for the goal and lost the number of times after he was again completely ghosted by oncoming stoke players, one of our weak links all season)
Cabaye - 7 (ran his socks off and looked like one of the only players who wanted to win today)
RLC - 8 (good run off the ball for the finish, well taken, always seems to put in a good performance, solid player)
Zaha - 6 (quiet today)
Townsend - 6 (quiet and poor today)
Schlupp - 6 (helped prevent a goal with decent pace and awareness to track back)
MacArthur - 5 (that quiet I forgot he played)

Benteke - 6 (more threatening with him but he's not a £30 mill striker, good in the air, poor on the floor)

In the first half we lost the ball a lot to Stoke’s greater intensity in midfield. In the second half we improved in that respect, and not just owing to Benteke’s appearance. Their goal was a very good one, but a bit against the run of play, and we did very well to maintain performance levels and equalise so quickly.

Towards the end the match got a bit wild and might easily have conceded a second goal. However we didn’t, and kept on pressing Stoke with an eventual result.

I thought Hennessey, Schlupp, Tomkins, Cabaye and Zaha did exceptionally well.

Stoke’s game plan was (a) to try to stop us scoring and (b) to try to grab a breakaway goal. It didn’t make for a pretty match, and our passing wasn’t as good as it might have been; also we have got the bad habit of pausing on breakaways to give the opposing defenders the chance to get back into position. But it is a great achievement to have frustrated their game plan and won.

So many mistakes from every player apart from Tomkins, calm and assured, so much better than Dann.

We have two poor full backs, Sakho is a clown and yes it is ok to say that despite his winner.

Weak in midfield, Luca loses too many 50/50 balls.

Townsend simply dreadful.

Lotus Cheek, good finish but not a wide player.

Zaha very quiet, but we remain a one man team.

Benteke, waste of space.

Poor performance, great result, especially when Stoke missed that late chance.

Not gona rate everyone but a couple of thoughts.

Tomkins was obviously quality - the best centre back pairing we have as was evident under Allardyce last season as well.

I was as gutted as anyone to Hennessey on the team sheet but would say some are being harsh saying he had nothing to do - I actually thought he had a good game. Started a couple of attacks with quick throws out which I liked.

Although another game goes by without a goal for Benteke I thought he was good when he came on - won headers, brought it down and played some nice one touch passes. Worked with Wilf really well and made our midfield look a lot more threatening.

A word for their three centre backs who are absolute monsters in stature - honestly thought we wouldn’t get through them - they got in the path of every through ball. We had to show a lot of character to get that win today so they brought out another side to us today.

Tomkins very good but surprised nobody mentioned his gift to Shaqiri for the goal? Massively at fault following a diversion than the ball.

Worst performance for a while but a big confidence boost to win like that, especially as a draw would have been a massively wasted opportunity!

Townsend has been awful both today and against Everton, I dont see how anyone is rating him above a 5.

Roy edging towards our best side and formation.

Tomkins is our best defensive centre back? Who know? Wrong captains all season> Who knew?

RLC has to play central. Roy is stubborn

Average game and we've played much better in recent weeks and not got what we deserved, so this felt very good. Points are all that matter now so that is a huge win.

Frustrating that we can't ever keep a clean sheet but I though Tomkins was very good. Very harsh for speroni and Dann to be dropped but I think Tomkins has deserved a start.

Hennessey - 6 - nothing to do
Ward - 5 - think he is limited and TFM should start as he's better going forward
Schlupp - 6 - did ok
Tomkins - 7 - our best player
Sakho - 5 - bit shaky at times. Priceless winner though
Luka - 5 - passing was a bit off at times but played well in parts
Cabaye - 6 - great energy and workrate and very unlucky not to score the winner himself
McArthur - 5 - didn't do much wrong but I think it's too negative a tactic playing him wide
RLC - 5 - worst game for us but still managed to score a decent goal. I don't get why roy plays him on the right when he's clearly better centrally.
Townsend - 6 - if he only he could shoot and score even he'd be brilliant. But his end product is often lacking. Great work rate as per usual though. Must be restored to the wing
Zaha - 6 - often a threat but one of his quieter games. Should be high up left or right of Benteke in a 4-3-3

Benteke - 5 - was ok and clearly getting his sharpness back. I think our destiny this season depends on him regaining his form. Must start on Tuesday.

Hodgson - 6 - a bit too conservative again but got away with it.

Do you think it could have something to do with the big old assist for the first goal?

It was bizarre in a way that Roy said last week “we’re gonna start playing badly soon and what will happen” and then we play relatively poorly and win albeit with a huge amount of fortune in respect of the Shawcross chance. Fine lines and all that but f—k me we’ve deserved a break this season. Thank you footballing Gods. You’ve made me a very happy man for a night.
