Brighton (away)

We have to play our best players and Ward is not one of them. Constantly targeted and struggling defensively and totally inept with the ball and going forward. Let's not get complacent and just keep picking the same team when we know we can do better.

We need to make sure we nail their two wingers who both look very good players and have loads of pace. TFM for Ward for this one I think. Schlupp will be fine at LB. Benteke will have to play to keep their world class centre backs busy.

Would probably only switch TFM for Ward.

Otherwise as good as we can put out.

I would like to see JR in central midfield at some stage.

I think he has the composure to play there.

Schlupp isn't very good, the left back position hasn't been anywhere near strong enough for too long now.

Agreed about Ward being replaced.

Roy will most likely start with the same 11 that ended yesterday:

.............Hennessy..................
Ward..Sakho..Tomkins..Schlupp
...........Cabaye..Luka..............
.....Zaha..................Townsend.
................RLC.......................
.............Benteke....................

One bad game has played well for us before and since , gives us more pace down the right and across the defence to cover , Ward did well on left a few weeks ago and I'd be tempted to switch him

I can see Roy going with the same starting lineup as yesterday, with McArthur starting and Benteke on the bench would make sense to me. Without doubt they will "come at us" early on which we will need to stem the flow and JM gives us that extra protection and energy in midfield, also it allows us to continue to use Zaha and Townsend with their pace to get in behind their big CB's even as impressive as they have been, its the trickery and directness of WZ and AT that could unlock them.
If that fails we then have the alternative to then introduce CB to unsettle their defensive kingpins, and then revert to our wide men system for greater freedom from wide areas to exploit with a Front Three .

It would make no sense whatsoever not starting Benteke.

Get Wilf to run the channels, get him on the ball in dangerous positions. Don't mind RLC pushing on and Zaha dropping back to collect the ball. If the ball goes long I want Wilf close to Benteke. If Wilf plays well we should win.

I don't remember many attacks coming down Ward's side in recent games to be honest.

Ward has done well and is solid and reliable most of the time. Fosu Mensah is massively overrated.

Ward's one of the few players in the squad who has played against Brighton before and knows what it means. Would keep him in the team.

-----------A Keeper
Ward Tomkins Sakho Schlupp
Wilf Cabaye Luka Townsend

They have decent wingers who have pace. They will tear ward apart.

Given that RLC fitness issue is ongoing as both he Roy talked about after England I was surprised he played 90 against stoke. As such I壇 be shocked if he played more that 45-60 against Brighton. Far too many games coming to have him unnecessarily injured now.

With that in mind two teams:

With RLC:

----------------------------Hennessey----------------------------
TFM-----------Tomkins-----------------Sakho------------Schlupp
覧覧覧--洋illvojevic---------------Cabaye--------覧覧
----------Zaha覧覧覧由LC覧覧覧Townsend---------
覧覧覧覧覧覧傭enteke覧覧覧覧覧覧覧

Without RLC:

----------------------------Hennessey----------------------------
TFM-----------Tomkins-----------------Sakho------------Schlupp
Jimmy覧-洋ilivojevic----------Cabaye ----------Townsend
----------------Benteke-----------------Zaha---------------------

Notes:

TFM in for ward here against the pace of Brighton, although ward is better defensively

Townsend on the left gettting crosses in to benteke without the need for a cut back despite the assist yesterday

Roy loves a narrow 4-4-2 and the team has played well in it for the past five games now so I can't see him changing for such a big game and having just played a few days earlier.

We need to watch Will Buckley. Double, even triple mark him. He’s better than Zaha.

The simple formation is 4-3-3 with RLC just behind Benteke and the 2 wingers running at their awful and slow FBs.

I would have thought the team picks itself.
Definitely keep Ward, he's done it before at the Amex and in an organised defence plays well. A great assist against Everton too, its not a time to replace with TFM.
Schlupp at left back will be tested but he has pace at least
Tomkins and Sakho play well together.
Will Benteke start? McArthur might well be an option from the start to make us compact and busy in the middle with Tekkers to come on later. Hope Cabaye is ok after hobbling off on Saturday.
