That may happen when Benteke is fully match fit

No thanks. Too similar to play together.

I assume Chelsea can only really take him back if he is not doing well and playing, not only contractually but in order to not undermine a clear business strategy of theirs. They can hardly have 40 players out on loan and then get a reputation for recalling any that do well. Surely would cause some significant concerns amongst the clubs they depend on for fees etc in this area in the future. You would certainly think twice about a season long loan of a chelsea player if you knew you couldn't rely on it actually lasting a season if the player does well for you.

I agree Scro.

It would undermine the whole loan system, not just re Chelsea, if the parent club could change their minds and recall a player from a season-long loan. The club that has borrowed the player has made plans that include that player, so they shouldn’t be disadvantaged unless they agree that they don’t really need him.

So whilst we might have been willing to release Bamford back to them (had he not walked of his own accord), we won’t want to release RLC.

I believe the only justifiable grounds for recall are that the principle club have injury problems, not that a loanee is doing well and could possibly get into their first team.

I don’t think that’s the case any more Darzet.

The Prem rules now regard season-long loans as ‘temporary transfers’. The two clubs can insert a clause (eg to recall if the player isn’t being selected anymore), but crucially BOTH clubs have to agree that the player should return.

Chelsea can’t just ask and get their way, regardless of their own injury situation. A return would have to meet the contract clauses and Palace would need to agree.

Why would Palace need to agree if the contract clause is met?

And alternatively, why would a contract clause even exist if Palace need to agree?

Doesn't make any sense.

The impression I got was they can recall him if he isn’t playing regularly. He has played or been in the matchday squad when fit/returning from injury. Way RLC is talking he’s just happy to be playing every week. He goes back to Chelsea he will be back to square one. Look what happened when Ake went back. He didn’t play. RLC has an outside chance of going to the World Cup, whatever people think, as we don’t have many decent midfielders to pick from. To get into that squad he has to be playing every week. Not just to impress but show he can play in games without much rest inbetween despite questions over his fitness.

On a slight tangent. Clubs like Chelsea and Man City are killing the youth set ups by hording all these younger players and loaning/renting them to the opposition.

There's a limit to how many loanees a club may have, why not a limit to how many players a club can loan out within their own division?

Makes sense to me.

Both clubs agree to any clauses before the loan goes ahead. If we weren’t happy to accept a recall clause, we could have disagreed and rejected the loan before taking RLC on.

If there is a clause with regard to recalling RLC, there could be a dispute in January about whether he had or had not been played enough for us. For example, given his fitness record we might argue that he missed matches due to injury, whereas Chelsea might argue we’d dropped him.

It’s all irrelevant though as I anticipate that RLC would have played enough for us come January that Chelsea wouldn’t have a leg to stand on.

However, if we have a similar clause in Tim F-M’s loan contract, we might be on thinner ice with regard to his loan. But maybe Man Utd aren’t concerned that much, as they’ve plenty of cover.

Well, I think they can only loan one player to each Prem club, so at least they’re limited to the number of clubs there are in the league!

But I agree, a few clubs are hoovering up more than their fair share of young talent.

RLC is physically strong and has all the attributes to be brilliant but he hasn't been. The buzz around his England performance has clouded judgement imo.
