Why the rivalry with Brighton?

Article about the rivalry from Fifield - worth a read.

Against the grain: its down to 1970s ennui. Lost souls. Boredom.

Beige, grey, clunky, plain dull .Depressing Sundays, medieval Wednedsay afternoons. Drab and dreary times. livened up by the puce colours of your aunt's crimpelene bell-bottoms.

Listlessness. Life is elsewhere.

What to do? We neither of us had much on that time. It's forgiveable. Just passing time. As the song has it.

A confection. Like most competition. Like football. Like life.

And then we die.

Just passing time.

I did not realise we had a top Poet in our midst Joe very impressed.
But quite right, none of us know how this came about Millwall and Charlton is understandable due to nearness, but Brighton?
Possibly like yourself, i was part of a generation in the 70's that looked forward to those games more than any other, inc those crazy stop start train journeys on the way back amongst many others incidents, but i hasten to add i was not one of those hooligans but in a strange way they were exciting times to be a Palace supporter.

For anyone who thinks it began with just Mullery and Venables, this famous TV bust-up between Malcolm Allison and Alan Mullery was a layer of personal hate in place already: To view the link you have to Register or Login For me this is largely irrelevant though. Running fights at Norwood Junction in the early eighties, the 5 pens, FFS Murray at the Amex, them singing "where's your Murray" gone as he was stretchered off in the semi. Basically they've got no one nearby to hate and we've got too many, we're made for each other.

Not sure why there's so much confusion over the rivalry on BBC etc. today.

For a long time, I think we were the closest league club to Brighton? Certainly it must be a similar distance apart as between Norwich and Ipswich...

There's a simple reason for the 'rivalry.' We had the Clowns and Millwank as our rivals and Bwighton were a no-mark, nonentity cypher on the south coast that would likely come near last in any neutral fan's attempt to name the 92 league clubs. We happened to spank them a few times over a particular decade, break their hearts (and legs) a few times and earn some perhaps deserved resentment. They then blew us up into their 'rivals' so they could find a scintilla of footballing relevance but any serious look at the two clubs' history over the last forty years proves no real rivalry exists. You'd have to spend a considerable time at the same level for that. ( Bet that stung any Weed reading this )

The worst thing that could have happened to them would have been if we'd gone out of business in 2010 as they'd have precious little glue to keep that utterly forgettable club together. And even if we lose tonight, the fact remains that we will eventually prove that they are not rivals over any significant time frame. They're just a pointless, temporary pet project for a sugar daddy that nobody cares about but us. For which they should be eternally grateful.

Geographically, Millwall and Charlton are Palace's nearest rivals. However, to have a rivalry of any sorts, you really need to have regular fixtures against each other, which largely rules out Charlton, who Palace have only played sporadically since both clubs were formed in 1905, with the biggest clashes only coming in the past 30 years or so.

Millwall are far more long standing rivals, they are an older club than Palace, having formed in 1885, but it should be pointed out, 'Millwall' is an East London placename and between 1885 and 1910, they played in their original area on the other side of the Thames on the Isle of Dogs.

This is really why Millwall's main rivals have always been West Ham, they both started as factory workers' teams and had a fierce rivalry before Palace had even been established.

The reason the rivalry with Brighton took off really comes from the fact that by 1976, Palace had begun a third season in the old Division Three (now called League One), Charlton had been promoted in 1975, Millwall in 1976, so in the 1976/77 season, Brighton actually were Palace's geographically nearest fixture.

There had already been clashes between supporters in previous years. most notably in the Summer of 1973 when a huge travelling Palace support visited Brighton for a pre-season friendly, with plenty of 'action' off the pitch.

The 1976/77 season was pivotal as Palace and Brighton clashed not only in the League twice, but another three fixtures in the FA Cup, back in the day when unlimited replays used to occur to settle a draw, Palace drew 2-2 at Brighton, 1-1 at Selhurst Park and then the infamous clash at 'neutral' Stamford Bridge in November 1976, was the game where the rivalry actually exploded.

Palace, possibly against the play, held a 1-0 lead, Brighton had a couple of goals disallowed, and then had a penalty awarded in the 2nd half, which they scored, only for the ref to order a retake for encroachment, although it's widely agreed it was Palace captain Jim Cannon who ran in before the kick!

The re-take was saved, leading to Brighton manager Alan Mullery, who already had a history of arguments with previous Palace boss Malcolm Allison and the then Palace boss Terry Venables absolutely losing the plot, swearing and making gestures at nearby Palace fans (for which he was fined at a later disciplinary meeting) - and so the off field rivalry had truly spread through both clubs amongst players and management alike and has carried on for over forty years, even though at most points in history, Brighton have had to get promotion to have a brief chance of playing Palace for a season or two and then falling behind for a decade or more.

Didn't Brighton try to fabricate a rivalry with Leyton Orient a few years ago?
