Brighton (away)

Brighton set up for the counter. We did ok. Benteke much better, but would like to see us counter more. So slow, and passing ponderous.

Hennessey 6 fine

Schlupp 6 Defended ok
Sakho 6 Looked up for it
Tomkins 6 Not a lot to do
Ward Solid

Townsend 6 Some good crosses, not enough action but worked hard
Milivojevic 6 Much better than last game
Cabaye 6 MOM not quite sure why he came off. He runs the games for us
RLC 6 Some decent touches

Zaha 6 In and out of the game. Should have had 2 pens for blatant pushes that won't be picked up by the media
Benteke 6 much better from the big lad; held it up well. Will come on for that outing

Subs:

McArthur 6 Did ok without affecting the game.

Everyone was ok, but no killer performances. That said, our first point away from home and our first clean sheet. A good result all things considered.

Back 4 and Henessey did well.

Thought Cabaye was very very poor and Stephens had the beating of him.

Loftus Cheek and Luka played well.

Didnt happen for Zaha or Townsend.

Benteke looks tired and poor.

Brighton better than expected. Look a solid team. They will stay up

Finally, our set piece are an utter embarrassment.

No player really stood out as MOTM if i'm honest.

Hennessey makes me so nervous. Flapping at a corner and completely missing the ball. Townsend clearing one off the line.

If we had just a little more attacking threat we could have won.

I felt BHA were poor and we could have beaten them. A point is ok but we have to beat these poor teams.

MOTM Luka. Special mention for Tomkins who was commanding.
Hennessey was steady except for one corner which he totally missed. Still not comfortable with him in goal.
Both teams were decidedly poor and that was clearly evident in the lack of clear cut chances. Respect the point and move forward.

Benteke did very well in the air, especially in the first half but that threat seemed to fade in the second half and I couldn’t help feeling that we should have moved to a 4-2-3-1 at that point.
Once Benteke gets a goal- he’ll start banging them in. Such a confidence player.
Wilf was trying too hard and was limited playing down the middle.

Bring on Alan Pardew’s West Brom on Saturday!

Hard to give detailed ratings from a live stream but, overall, I suppose it's positive that we got our first away point and clean sheet. I thought they were there for the taking though and our inability to score away from home is a massive concern.

We desperately need two strikers - one to partner Benteke to enable Wilf to play in his best position out wide, and a decent striker to have on the bench to come on after 60/70 mins when Benteke has given up.

Roy is playing it very cautious at the moment. I could understand that early on but I assumed he would unleash the players a bit more by this stage. I fear this is just the way he likes his teams to play - very rigid but hard to beat.

Good performances

- the defence was pretty solid. Nothing outstanding and Brighton were limited as an attacking force but we looked solid enough. Nothing for Hennessey to do.

Average performances

- Cabaye was below par and his setpieces were again poor.
- Luka was ok but not hitting the heights of last season.
- Zaha was wasted up front and did his best work when pulling wide.

Poor performances

- Benteke - deserves some patience as he regains match sharpness but he looks like a 5m striker at the moment and not a 30m plus one.

- RLC - one of his less than impressive games. But surely Roy can see he's not in his best position out wide.

- Townsend - so frustrating. Works hard as ever but where is his end product? Surely he has to step up at some point and score or make a telling contribution?

If we get a win on Saturday this will look like a good point. If we fail to beat WBA then it will be two wasted opportunities.

This was a bit of a non event. Brighton were not much of a threat. Despite some nice passing by them they never went anywhere and only threatened from set pieces. They are very well drilled and its no wonder they have conceeded few goals. It will be interesting to see how they do when teams are playing them for the second time.

With that in mind I would say that our defence played well. Few errors, no howlers. Ward was solid as usual and did a decent job marking Murray at set pieces. Sakho made a few important interventions. Schlupp was good defensively and tried to puch forward. Over all it was much better than in previous games.

In attack we looked disjointed. Brighton's strategy for Zaha was to litterally push him over. Benteke doesn't seem to be on the same page as Townsend, Zaha and RLC. More practice needed. Zaha and Benteke both denied by the keeper when they should have scored. We really need to start taking some of these chances.

For me the most telling thing from this game was our bench. We started Benteke and subbed midfielder for midfielder thus preventing us from playing with Zaha and Townsend up front. We litterally have no alternative on the bench who can alter the way we approach/change the game. Puncheon and Sako are liabilities. A striker is desperately needed, one that can also play in a front three would be great.

The biggest problem we have and have had for nearly 18 months is WE WILL NOT SHOOT OUTSIDE THE BOX.

Guys start taking more pop shots. I promise you its our only problem, we are doing everything else right.

I know Roy is wedded to his 442 and you have to respect the improvements we've made under him, but I thought we were crying out to go 433 today with Wilf and Townsend as proper wingers. Wilf is wasted up front and RLC should be playing in the middle.

That said, we did look pretty solid and it's a decent point. Glad not to lose to that lot and get an away point on the board. Onwards and upwards.

It's a bit harsh criticising Hennessey for the clearance off the line when A) He appeared to have it covered and B) Murray somehow had a totally free header in the first place.

Tomkins has been good these past two games but he completely lost his man and gave him a free header off a corner in the first half. He rarely looks particularly solid defending set pieces to me.

Hodgson needs to stop ******* playing Wilf through the middle. We desperately needed and need width. Many half chances went begging because there was nobody on the end of crosses. So frustrating.

Why is it that everyone seems to say RLC in the middle with Wilf on the wing but Woy doesn't play them like that. Has anyone heard a reason ?

A draw is obviously better than a loss but that’s 2 points dropped tonight 100%. Oh my god for the past 3/4 years all I’ve been hearing about Brighton is that they are the seaside Barcelona. ******* yeah right. Don’t get me wrong we ain’t anything special this season obviously but the are poor. They were there for the taking tonight. I’ll sound biased but the league table is telling a lie. Especially if they are top half hahaha. Give it 6-8 weeks they’ll be in a scrap too.

It’s hard to criticise Roy cos he’s slowly slowly turning it round but I can’t help and feel he’s holding the team back by playing 442. Square pegs in round holes. Zaha is NOT a striker. Loftus-Cheek is NOT a right midfielder. Stop it. We should of had 3 more wins under Roy but we don’t because the approach is far too cautious which is probably gonna get us relegated in the end. That’s a much better draw for them tonight than us.

Performance wise Hennessey did well again. Ward was brilliant to be fair but I have more confidence in TFM. Tomkins solid again. Cabaye was alright but set pieces are awful and when he went off we lost control of the match like always when he gets subbed. First half Benteke bullied them but second half was poor. I have been Bentekes biggest fan but he is really starting to frustrate me now. Movement in the box is awful! Zaha second half great cross from Schlupp lay off and he just watched it go by. So ******* annoying. I miss Conor Wickham. Bench offered nothing. We desperately need a quick nippy striker in January as well as a winger who will run at people quickly. Obviously a goalkeeper.

I won’t lose sleep tonight as it’s not a loss but that was frustrating as they were so poor

Zaha should be wide. Joke that RLC was instead, whose strength and direct running (when he can be arsed) would make him far better centrally. All in all a poor, nervy game from both sides. Ward played well, Hennessey unconvincing at set pieces even if not at fault directly. Have zero confidence in him, no presence. Cabayes set pieces abject again. Utterly wasted. Andros poor again. Zaha fitful and lacking end product but still main threat. Benteke poor, lacking aggression and for such a big bloke doesnt put it about enough at all. Luka good at points, porr at others, what has happened to his passing?

Happy with the point before, during and after game. Good result. We are in good form and playing well, even if that was a scrappy, nervy affair. All in all happy with both result and performance, for the most part.

People saying Cabaye was poor but I thought we looked much less in control when he went off.

Defended pretty well from what I could see from the away end, we look a lot better with Tomkins there than we did with Dann and great to finally get a clean sheet.

Zaha got crowded out in the middle and I don't see why we can't put him wide for the last 20 mins when the game gets stretched, but Roy knows what he's doing and we got a valuable point staying as compact as we did.

Brighton were there for the taking tonight if we had taken the chances early on in 1st 15 mins I think we would of won at a canter.

More even after that but we should of won but a draw was not a disaster.

Keeps the scoreboard ticking over. Avoid defeat and pick up some more wins before Christmas.

Sakho good performance and Luka better.

I don't think Cabaye was poor but he was below the standards he has set in recent weeks. His set pieces were poor though. I don't know why he's allowed to take them.
