The club actually made a direct donation and Karen Brady is a Tory peer. Couldn't be more blatant about it.

the costs of setting the stadium back to football use after the Diamond League athletics for two days a year are quite staggering, the corruption in this is blatant, surely this athletics event has to be axed.

Axing the athletics event would be more tragic than gifting the stadium to West Ham. What a great legacy from the Olympics.

The original purpose post 2012 was to keep the lower tier and just use it for athletics but they realised that was not financially practical.

I went in the summer (and will again next year) for athletics and it's great stadium for that but watching football is not suitable.
My understanding is that Spurs didn't want anything to do with an athletics track (quite rightly IMO). They offered to buy the stadium, totally knock it down (or more accurately, remove the scaffolding) and rebuild a proper football stadium in its place. To deal with this legacy bollocks, they offered to build, at Spurs' cost, a 35,000 seat stadium at the home of athletics, Crystal Palace. That wasn't acceptable to the athletics/Olympics wallers and that is a scandal. People like Coe and others have a lot to account for because they justified the whole multi billion event on legacy alone, which we all know was nonsense. Athletics is a very minor sport in this country. It will always be. This is about face saving and ego and the winners are the scummest club in the country by far.

By the way, Spurs and their fans are glad they go blown out of the ground. The new WHL is miles better.

Has to be an athletics legacy. Retain the track and give West Ham a ground with a running track round the outside of it.

It's bad enough that West ham got a very generous deal to rent stadium.....but heard the other day that the will also get 40% of any naming rights deal negotiated for stadium over 4 million. So if naming rights are sold for 10 mill they'd get 2.4 mill. Which is a year's rent so technically they would get stadium for free!!! Corruption is not strong enough a word.God I hope they get relegated and go into freefall

Wonder if its possible to put the company responsible for looking after the stadium into liquidation if its losing so much?. The fact its a subsidiary of another company and created solely for the London Stadium suggests they want all liabilities to accrue to just that one entity and thus no guarantees of underwriting limitless losses in place. Could be the leverage they need to re-open talks with the Golds

Why? The Olympics is about many many sports of which athletics is just one. And a small one at that. Why should WH benefit from some ridiculous policy about that ground?

The Man C stadium was designed to be converted to a footballl stadium from the beginning. This could easily have been done in advance for the olympics but this legacy crap got in the way, at our expense and WH unbelievable benefit.

As Payney said above, it was a stipulation that the ground is used for athletics.

I appreciate you consider that legacy to be crap, but we would not have won the 2012 bid unless weíd made that commitment.

The Man City stadium was for the Commonwealth Games, so didnít have the same legacy issue and, as you say, was designed for conversion from the outset.

At some point I wonder whether it will decided that the London stadium will be converted to football configuration permanently, but itíll be bad for our reputation with the IOC. Most other countries probably wouldnít care about that by now!

The deal with the Hammers is ludicrous, but I donít know how we can tear up a contract with them now. Unless Khanís team can find something illegal during the original deal, I fear this farce will continue.

London has had the Olympics three times now, and I cannot see it ever getting a 4th.

To be fair another city, eg Manchester may want to bid at some time in the future, however there are so many major cities around the world from countries that have never hosted it, I cannot see any city in GB getting it in our lifetime.

I think they need to make a hard decision - either leave it permanently set up in 'West Ham' configuration (ie with the scaffold stands), or knock it down one side at a time and build a proper football stadium there.

There is a running track next door to the London Stadium, there's your athletics legacy!

The loss-making cost over the 99 years that West Ham have signed up for will be £2BN. Spurs' ground, a proper football ground with fancy retractable pitch etc will cost £800m, less than half.

Bite the bullet time rather than faff about for another 10 years and be another £200m down

this is truly the worst ground in the league, I was in the upper section last season and you felt adrift from the game, worse even than Newcastle!
Basically London got taken for a ride with this deal as West Ham were the only viable option keeping the stadium intact and for multiple use and they new it.

It was stipulation from the IOC that the stadium is used for athletics after the games.

How would they enforce it though? There is one athletics meet of any note each year unless we are hosting a World Championship or European equivalent. Look at Beijing where the Birds Nest has hardly been used other than a world championship and the Cube is the same. I went last year and agree that it is pretty awful as a football stadium. Just don't understand why it wasn't designed like Stade de France where the track is mostly covered with seats when football or rugby is played

In truth, there are now a decreasing number of countries/cities that are bidding to host the Olympics, itís just not affordable for most.

Paris and LA seemed to win the next ones quite easily.

I expect the whole process and stipulations will have to be reconsidered, but I can see why the IOC donít want to give the Olympics to a city thatíll then turn the athletics stadium over to football as soon as possible.

But itís hard to imagine many countries will be able to hold the Olympics in future unless they have regular guaranteed use of their stadium afterwards.

Coupled with athletics being increasingly viewed with scepticism by the public due to the drugs issues, the future of athletics isnít looking great is it.
