I'm not convinced that Hodgson is playing Wilf in the same way that Allardyce did.

Heís actually got him more defensive - he was tracking back at WBA. Iíd say Zaha needs to be played in a 442.

It may be that RLC is a square peg in a round hole playing alongside him.

I have not met a single palace fan that disagrees with the sentiments in this thread. Worry that Roy can't see it. Persists with the rigid 4-4-2. Easy to work out.

Sure he's scored a couple of goals whilst playing up front, but I really think now that Benteke is back the team would benefit if we swapped Wilf and RLC.

We need to make this change ASAP imo. Hodgson has managed to find a formation that nullifies two of our biggest threats in RLC and Wilf, which in turn has negatively impacted Benteke's game too as Wilf would be creating so many more chances for him if he was playing out wide. How many dangerous crosses has RLC put in the box for Benteke to attack? None from memory. Wilf would put at least 3 or 4 per game.

Hodgson has neutralised the threat of RLC, Wilf and Benteke in one fell swoop. We need to go 433 or 4231 and attack with width, which shouldn't be hard to do seeing as we have two excellent wingers and a target man who needs crosses.

For the record- I appreciate we've started picking up points with this formation/shape, but we're toothless going forward what with all the square pegs in round holes. What has Wilf contributed in the last 3 games? RLC? (Yes he scored vs Stoke but he was very poor in open play playing RM).
Spot on.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought the formation yesterday was pretty fluid, especially in the first half. We’re certainly 442 without the ball, Wilf patiently waiting on the halfway line for the counter. But with the ball we were often 433, Wilf moving left and RLC coming into the middle, pretty much what we all after. We don’t want to rigidly stick to 433 because Wilf will end up marking the fullback, not be up the pitch when we counter and’ll be dead on his feet by 80 mins.

Not worried, starting to look solid.

Another day in both games we could have scored.

I think there is a bigger plan listening to Roy yesterday. He recognises the need to change players to make his system work (442) but needs points on the board to lift us up the league to make us attractive to come to. I think he will get us enough points to do that and then expect some significant changes in January.

Most sensible OP of the day? , week?, month?. I am pleased Roy is changing things around but surely this is such a sensible suggestion yet. So obvious I missed it! Wilf is best as a winger and RLC shinned for England in the middle. Swap then Roy asap!!! We may start scoring away from home even.

Maybe not directly, but that doesn't take into account the corner won, crosses spilled, cleared to attackers, and otherwise maintaining attacking threat which other attacks can be built from. Also what is the criteria for what is a cross and what is a pass.

We've had some really gilt edged chances to score both away and at home in the last couple of months, it's not Roy's fault they're not putting the ball in the net when they should be, the buck stops with those players in that respect and that includes our big names. We'd be half way up the table now if just two of those had been converted, simple as that.

It's a bit like when Pardew played Bolasie up front. zaha is a winger and is at his best running at the full back. He's completely wasted in the middle (as is RLC on the wing). But Roy seems to prefer a narrow midfield. At least we've stopped leaking goals (although still suspect rom set pieces).

This is what Iím struggling to get at the moment. Heís not playing in the middle specifically, he has a fairly free role. Yes, when the ball goes long heís not far from benteke but he has to be because benteke will likely win the ball.

When that isnít the case heís often running the channels and hugging line. He has been the width a lot of the time, itís just quite rightly when we might go long heís sniffing for the flick on so when out of posession he comes more central.
