His whipping of the Labour party to support the Tories on Brexit since has also been hard to square with someone who genuinely thinks Brexit will be a disaster for this country.

But he knows he leads a party which is overwhelmingly Remain. I think that, more than any ideological commitment to the EU, explains his cursory commitment/campaigning for Remain.

Others are free to disagree. I would love to be wrong.
I think the incredible right wing nature of the Brexit campaign changed Corbyn on this. I'm very critical of the EU and think there need to be wholesale changes but was and am strongly remain as it brings workers together.

An electable Labour Party, whether you like it or not, is one with radical ideas and led by a socialist. Biggest vote increase in history. Now 8 points ahead.

I think we will get a different kind of Brexit under a Corbyn government. Interesting to see whether the compulsory takeover of the assets of EDF, Iberdrola, RWE, Eon, the railway companies and possibly of Vattenfall and GDF Suez will go down if we are members of the single market. Also, how much will it cost, how much will we borrow and at what price, assuming there is an appetite by overseas institutional investors for c.£180m for nationalisation, £60bn for PFI repurchase and £250bn for investment. That will be on top of other borrowing. Personally I'd be happy if he just focussed on the £250bn borrowing for investment. I also don't think people have been listening to McDonnell. He has said he will be an iron chancellor on day to day current spending.

look on the bright side, if socialists trash the economy, it will mean less immigrants attracted to "UK plc"

look at Eastern Europe. Nationalism is strong there because of the iron curtain.

oh ok whatever you say!!

Anyone able to offer a sensible response to my post?

My own feeling is that Clegg damaged their rep so badly, particularly over their spectacular climb down on their student fees pledge and perhaps how they were so easily manipulated by the Tories over the choices available to us in the referendum on electoral reform, that ensured that FPTP remained, that their recovery, if it ever happens is a long way off, despite their being a yawning gap in the polarised politics we currently enjoy/endure for them to exploit.

The universities are now starting to borrow serious money for modernisation and expansion. The University of Oxford this week issued 100 year bonds to raise £750m. I don't know how that would be affected if tuition fees were abolished and the universities were then effectively nationalised again?

If the Tories are roughly sensible in terms of expenditure then Labour should inherit a reasonable position. The term funding will be repaid around 2020 and 21 so the national debt will be falling. If McDonnell is focussed on investment rather than spraying money around to middle class lobby groups then he can fund infrastructure and housing. My guess however is that the Tories will turn on the spending floodgates in 2019 and 2020 rather than wait for Labour to do it and take the credit.

But far more will because they are not idiots taken in by the smear campaign waged against him and are more attracted to the politics of social justice than one of greed, that feeds the lie that we must ensure that the rich continue to prosper so there is money to trickle down.

So while we wait for the filthy rich to suddenly come to that eureka moment when realising they have more money than they could ever spend in 5 lifetimes, they go 'I know what I am going to do with all this money I do not actually need, I am going to give it the poor people who cannot properly feed and cloth themselves'. Until that happens Corbyn is a very attractive proposition.
