The Magic Sponge

Football podcast hosted by Jimmy Bullard and two comedians, Rob Beckett and Ian Smith. Been going for 3 years now but only got round to listening recently. Little al and scro recommended it on the podcast thread and gave it a listen - bloody hilarious compulsive listening.

If you like football insider tittle tattle then you'll love this. They have a special guest on every show and it's like being a fly on the wall in a pub listening to them spilling the beans over a drink or two about all sorts of crazy stories from their football days.

It is chaotic and very laddish but some of the stories really make you laugh out loud. Quite a bit of Palace references too. Just finished listening to Steve Claridge's one where he blames Alan Smith for leaving us because he fined and dropped him for turning up late for a reserve game, but let Salako off two weeks later for the same misdemeanour.

Bullard tells a funny story at the end of that pod when he was at Ipswich, him and two other players (which unusually for this show he doesn't name) are in the treatment room regularly with long term injuries. Whenever they had to go into the ice machine for 20 mins one of the players would always sneak off. After a few times Bullard and the remaining player wondered where he was going, so Bullard decided to follow him one day. He ended up following him in his car and found out he was going to the other player's house who was left in the treatment room. No prizes for guessing why! Bullard just came right back and told the guy in the treatment room. Obviously there were fisty cuffs.

If you like hearing football gossip from behind the scenes then you will really enjoy these pods. They're all on You Tube too if you prefer that to the pods.

Anyone else a fan?

It’s a good listen, if you can get past Bullard being a knob.

The best ones are the Stewart Castledine and Tony Warner ones.

Salako was on their recently and they had a section talking about Pardews cup final dance.

Another podcast with a similar sort of theme is; Quickly Kevin, Will he score? Which also has a load of ex 90s footballers talking about their careers. Well as that as interviews with the guys behind Championship Manager & the Graham Taylor interview. There is also an episode about Forest & Clough in the 90s which is funny in parts, but also sad as the extent of Cloughs drink problems become more and more noticeable.

These are brilliant especially the two Tony Warner ones as mentioned above.

The Clinton O'Morrison one has some great stories about him breaking into the Palace team and his exploits with Ireland.

Enjoyed a few last night.

The Ruddock one was irritating. Ruddock just commandered the whole episode.

The Clinton and Salako ones were good. Will catch up with the others. Some stories told for sure. Stuff that is usually well out of reach for fans ears.

Avid listener here.

Really enjoy them and although Bullard is over the top, do find him funny. Don't bother with the Ruddock one, absolute wanker of the highest order.

Also interesting that on the Monday after our Cup Final all the management team had to meet at the training ground for a de brief, and Salad and the others lined up the Pards dance on the big screen for when Pardew came in.

Salako didn't exactly knock him for it but did say his time would've been better spent telling one of the Palace players to go down and feign injury just to stop any United momentum.

Bullard always refers to Pardew not very favourably as 'chocolado'. Another show where Pards gets a mention is the one with ex manager John Sitton. Re-tells a story about Pards ending up in the back of his cab after being on a coaching course with him many years before. Doesn't speak very highly of him either.
