Membership and Parish points has killed the away support .
Struggling to sell out at £20 and under for such an important match is a poor show .

I no quite a few fans who stopped going away some because there kids would not be able to see with the standing also some older fans who didn't want to stand for 90 min. It would have been so easy for club to say first 4 5 rows are no standing and let home team stewards know what they done but to be honest they don't realy care they get no money from away games don't matter if we take 1000 or 3000 .

I know 6 fans who are fit 65-70 year olds but they’ve stopped going to away matches for the same reason. They’re happy to stand during dramatic moments, but they’re not keen on standing throughout nor being jostled about.

It’s happened too often to them and they don’t like having to make a fuss to ask those in front to sit more, so they don’t go away now. If they could be guaranteed a hassle free seat, then they would still be going to a few away matches per season for another 5-10 years (health permitting).

They really don’t want to be party poopers nor spoil the enjoyment of other fans, so it’s a shame both approaches couldn’t be accommodated.

If you multiply this sentiment that you and I have both experienced across many fans, it adds up to a large number of Palace who are no longer attending away matches. I can see both points of view, but there have been times when I’ve only been able to see a third of the pitch, so I’m not giving up a day nor the costs for that ‘privilege’ often now either.

They are all ST holders so not adversely affected by membership nor the Parish points, as most games go down to their level on the priority ladder anyway.

There are multi storey car parks in town that are walking distance, just make sure they don’t close too early.

I always park at Shamrock Quay ,there is a decent not too busy pub that does decent grub and is about a ten min walk to the away end . It was free the last time I was down there . Plenty of room (or there was up until I let you all in on it )

Being a bit boring and having the Mrs and child with me, I choose my seats quite strategically at away games, either at the front, or above a stairwell etc. We sit down during the game apart from 'exciting moments', and it's surprising (or maybe not?) how often those directly behind us then choose to sit as they aren't forced to stand.

The only advice I can give if people need to be a bit more selective over where they go is that when booking seats, do it over the phone or in person rather than take pot luck online.

The excellent book by SB Mann (Mike the Tie on here) about season 2013/14 covers this issue quite extensively, as his elderly mother was similarly affected at away games.

There was plenty of space at West Brom and Leicester where people could be in relatively thinly populated parts of the terrace and sit if they wanted to. Surprisingly few did choose to sit though and the big majority tended to cluster in the more crowded areas.

Does anyone know if they still shut the M3 at night between junctions 2 and 4? I heard something about the Woodlands Lane bridge being replaced which has meant continued night closures between 2 and 3 even though the roadworks have finished?

Interesting to hear, thanks.

Sadly none of the guys I’ve mentioned would gamble on buying tickets and travel in the hope they’d be able move to quieter seats...well, not whilst in the Prem.

That reminds me of the last journey we made back from a Southampton match.

(We were wary, because the previous one had sent us on a detour towards Ascot and then Egham! Road closure on the M3 again.)

There was nothing announced on the website last time, but our hearts sank as our satnav told us to prepare for another junction closure on the M3. But as we approached that junction and several cars left the motorway, a few car drivers noticed that there appeared to be nothing going on. The M3 was open with no barriers, so we drove onwards with a handful of others.

We went slowly, thinking maybe we were wrong and we’d reach roadworks soon, but there was nothing going on and no workman around.

So a few of us drove that junction with the road to ourselves, it was almost spooky.

Brilliant. I have been diverted twice on that long detour in recent seasons coming back from night games down there - it’s a complete pain.
