Good stop-gap, decent pedigree and sounds better than what we've got.

Get this over the line quickly and we can focus on sorting out other problem areas.

Wouldn't make sense. The way we are going we will be down and any signing planned for the summer will go elsewhere. The summer was a fecking disaster for us

Espanyol have a 22 year old in goal who was on loan at Spurs last season but did not play a single game. Lopez is their only other GK from what i can see so not sure why they would sell.

A very strange transfer link in lots of ways.

Be interesting to see how long the deal is for. At that age a 12 month contract isn't much use as it will be harder to get another one at 37 at a top club surely? He also has us over a barrel and so will hold out for something longer I reckon. Two or maybe even 3 years.

But the reason he has us over a barrel remains and so we will be up for it. It could see us with a first and second choice keeper of 38 and one of 40 - there is a quiz question in the making

I guess you have seen a lot of him - who might he compare with in his current form do you think?

Current form? Has he played a game in the past 6 months?

Wouldn't object to this. Better than what we currently have, and if we were to try and sign a long-term replacement now, we'd inevitably pay a large premium for it being in January.

Would we? Ronnow who we looked at on Deadline day was in the middle of his season for Brondby at the time. If we signed him early Jan they would have a month to find a replacement without having to play a game and they have just 7 games of their season remaining. (Dropped from top spot in their last game before the winter break on Sunday) Other keepers may wish to move, permanently or on loan just a few months before the World Cup.

I haven't seen him lately. A few years ago he was one of the best two or three goalies in Spain - better than any English keeper, different planet to Wayne or Julian. He hasn't played much, recently. If he was asking for three years, we should tell him to do one.

I don't think Espanyol can afford to have players on grown up wages sitting on their bench.

We should be bringing in a few players early Jan, but unless the club changes the habits of a lifetime, we won't

Roy thinks at tender 36, he's quite young compared to himself.

It's conventional wisdom - if you're buying in the January window, it's usually out of some level of desperation. Anyone who knows anything about us knows that we could do with a new keeper. Of course there might be exceptions to the rule, but hanging our hats on a chap from the Danish League seems optimistic to me. Not sure who the last player to come to the Prem from the Danish League was, first that comes to mind was Andreas Cornelius, and he clearly wasn't up to it.

Just worth bearing in mind that Schlupp and PvA cost us 12-13m each in January, and one of those may have been worth the price tag, the other certainly hasn't been (despite being 'proven' in the Prem).

If we do sign him it will be a sign of desperation in our transfer strategy.
But in one sense, we are desperate. We have two senior keepers, neither of who are really up to the job at this level, and one of them seems to now have a question mark over his fitness.

If we can bring in someone who is demonstrably better than both of them, proven in a "top" league, and at (relatively speaking) minimal cost, then surely this is a good move.

Whether we like it or not, we remain in deep relegation trouble, and "top" targets may be reluctant to come here. If we could structure this one as a deal to the end of the season (be that a full transfer or a loan), with another year for him guaranteed if we stay up, we get a motivated player (as he needs us to stay up to get his new deal)who is much better than what we have for limited cost. That leaves money in the budget for other signings, and doesn't leave us with a millstone of a contract if we do go down. And if things go well to the end of the season, we can look for a long term number 1 away from the panic of a January window when everyone knows we are in urgent need of a keeper.

If we can do that kind of deal, I really can't see the downside. Of course, if he wants a three year contract on silly wages now, then that's a different story altogether

This is a funny one. Diego Lopez used to be very good but he has started to tail off the last 3 seasons or so. I can only ever see this being a short term deal to see us through until May and see which division we are in to decide where we go next. He ia only back up at Espanyol but backup to Pau Lopez who is a decent young keeper. The person who said Espanyol don't have another keeper they do... He's called Adrian Lopez.

He is better than Hennessey and Speroni by a country mile but at 36 he's not exactly much more than a stop gap. I think he might even be taller than The Hen.

He’s an enormous beast. We wouldn’t be getting bullied on corners any more.
I have a close friend who’s a season ticket holder at Espanyol, he says they have a really promising 19 year old as cover.
I share your reservations but, **** it, we are desperate, we really are.

I was looking at their squadthis morning. They have 3 young keepers floating on the outskirts of their team at the moment.

Yes, a stop gap and on loan; we're in a difficult position until we're safe for next season in the PL. Allows us better competition for places for six months and then rebuild in the summer.

(Now where have a heard us say that before!)
