Did we nearly sign Shearer?

I have a vague recollection that we nearly signed him when Southampton did. Is that right?

I don't that we came close to signing him. This was when Ian Wright left and we were looking for a replacement. IIRC, there was a lot of paper talk about us being interested but he put a stop to it saying he wasn't interested.

I think Noades may have made a low bid which was rejected. Shearer moved to Blackburn for over 1m more than we got for Wright 6 months later, so we were never seriously in the frame.

The story goes, we were quoted a price and Noades said no footballer would ever be worth it and refused to pay it

We had a bid accepted, but Shearer declined talks. Remember having this chat with NTE many years ago. We were offered Cole as part exchange for the Wright deal, but Noades wanted as much ££ as possible to fund the Shearer deal.

I think we offered £3m for Shearer which was a lot at the time. He had is eye on bigger things unsurprisingly. I still can’t understand why Noades didn’t try harder to keep Wright, it all happened in a flash and they spent most of the money on Gabbiadonkey without even seeing him play. Craziness all round.

Did we reject a 3 million offer from Blackburn for Thomas?

yes sure a fee had been agreed, but Thomas couldn't agree terms? Remember the Advertiser (which was good back then) ran with the headline "at 8k a week who wouldn't go" then 2 weeks later we kicked off the season at home to Blackburn.

The story goes that after Ian Wright left for Arsenal the three players Noades was looking to sign were Alan Shearer then of Southampton, Brian Deane, then at Sheff Utd and Marco Gabbiadini of Sunderland.

From memory, Wright was sold for 2.5 Million, which was a big fee in 1991 and Noades offered around 2.8 for Shearer, but was outbid by Blackburn, who paid around 3.6 million which Noades was never going to match.

Apparently we had already agreed the 1.8 million fee for Gabbiadini when Sheff Utd came back and offered Deane for a similar price - arguably Deane would have suited Palace's more direct style far better.

It also seems that Arsenal offered Andy Cole in part exchange for Wright (Cole joined Bristol City for £500,000 in the summer of 1992!)

Another target that didn't quite make it was Duncan Ferguson who was just starting out at Dundee Utd - it took us nearly three years to finally find a decent replacement in Chris Armstrong, with players like Collymore, Paul Williams and David Whyte never fitting into the gap left by Wright leaving in 1991 and Bright in 1992.

We sold Wright in Sept 91 and got Armstrong exactly a year later who actually played a couple of games with Bright until we sold him to SheffWeds
Would have been interesting to see Bright and Armstrong together no doubt we would have stayed up that season

Gabbiadini wasnít a donkey. He just wasnít Wright. A 1 in 3 record for Palace is not a player who is a donkey

Think they played two games (Villa away and ?) together before Bright was sold.

Shearer joined Blackburn 9 months after we'd sold Wright
The Duncan Fergerson story was in the summer of 92' and he opted for Rangers.
Deane was linked with Palace countless times over the years.
Some suggested Gabiaddini was a donkey is a myth. A talented player who didn't suit our style of play. He was purchased of the opinions Sir Steve valued and 1.8m for a division 2 striker was big big money.

Good summary of what happened but we signed Armstrong in 1992 so a year after Wright left.

Yes and then sold him for £800K to Wolves. Plus, my memory tells me we went in for Shearer @£3.5m and that he and Brian Deane were considered our strike partnership targets. ( Amazing but what I seem to recall ) Shearer clearly didn't want to come here and it basically took us until now to reestablish ourselves.

I thought Shearer turned us down as he was off to Man Utd in the summer, but Blackburn and Walker's mega bucks came along and blew even that offer out of the water.

Yes, Cole was recommended to Coppell but Noades wanted a pure cash deal. 6 months later Cole left to join Bristol City.

Don't know if this is true, but it does make sense. Shearer joined Blackburn and then cun_tona joined United at the back end of the year.
