This. Madden better than Cabaye is laughable. He barely played for us at us the top level.

Madden only played about 30 times for us and hardly any of those appearances were in the top flight.

Houghton played very well at first but saw us relegated, lose two cup semi-finals, then play well in the second tier for a season then look decent for a bit longer before losing his place in the side.

Hughes was exciting, lots of energy and very good for us. But his only top flight football for us ended in relegation.

Hopkin was excelllent in his first spell but never played at the top level for us.

Ambrose was excellent for a while and vital in keeping us up (in the second tier) twice but once he was moved on the team improved (plus how often did he play as a central midfielder for us?)

Lombardo was not a central midfielder and I'm pretty sure Taylor wasn't either.

Really hope there’s no truth in this. He’s a top player and we really seem to miss him when he’s not there.

Loved Michael Hughes to bits, for his work ethic, but as a footballer he canít be compared to Cabaye.

Cabaye has met, but not exceeded expectations.

Anyone thinking he was going to come in as the messiah were destined for disappointment.

losing Yoh at the end of the season is going to be a massive blow. We are going to need a very good transfer window somehow with RLC returned too. I suppose we'll cross that bridge when it comes but when we are being outgunned for all our targets it makes it very very difficult.

I reckon less than half on your list played the majority of their careers in central midfield and only Thomas & Gray competed for Palace in that position for more than 1 season in the top flight.

I really don't think it matters what Palace offer him, If he wants to return to France, He will do. Has just had another child, Maybe his partner wants to get the family back to where they are from. If he can get a decent contract in France I reckon he will head back there. Being a free agent in the summer should help him get one last payday.

He has been decent for us in patches, I would wish him well if he is off.

I suspect that he will leave and set up home in France. With a young family and the end of his career in sight, who can blame him. He will be missed but his wages will free up space for a good replacement.

Will be a shame to lose him, he has been decent. As someone said above he has met expectations but not exceeded them, I am resigned to losing him at the end of the season.

Hopefully we can get a good few months out of him as he puts himself in the shop window.

(I do think our French speaking lads all seem to have a really good relationship though, sometimes that can help keep someone around. 1 more year Yohan!)

It's going to be a massive issue for us come the end of the season losing so many players at the same time who have been allowed to run down their contracts, plus RLC going back to Chelsea and the possibility of losing Wilf.

This is the concern. We've got a big recruitment job to do this January and summer - whether we stay up or not.

Thomas and Gray were a real 'engine room' which I don't think has been replicated. The pairing of Murphy as an attacking midfielder, and Nicolas as a midfield destroyer were the only other two on the list who were exceptional for us. They certainly were as good as Cabaye in my opinion.

I think BUBBS list is not meant to be about how highly he rated every player on it but more a comment on how he rates Cabaye.

I am with him on this, as I think Cabaye at times has been more a liability than an asset.

I do appreciate he works his socks off, and plays likes he cares, so gets a big tick in the box for doing so, both traits that Palace fans down the years have had to admire because there has been a general lack of quality on the pitch to concentrate on other traits (bar circa 90/91) .

However in recent times the quality on show has gone up several notches and now Cabaye effort and commitment is let down by poor decision making typified by some ridiculous mistimed tackles in places on the pitch where it was totally unnecessary (Newcastle this season the one that springs to mind as an eg), unbelievably poor dead ball delivery and consistently poor passing within and across games. I often wonder if he had not played in the FA cup final whether we would have won it, as he was very very poor on the day.

I think this is all so obvious, particularly when I discuss Cabaye with my Palace supporting mates, we all seem in agreement on this, however it is clear that many also rate him very highly so I have to question my own judgement on him. When I do though, I still reach the same conclusion.

Its a funny old game.

EDIT: I would add Bobby Kellard to the list

Yohan has not been consistent enough for us to justify what were record wages - very good on his day and currently and at 32 playing for his next contract. When Don Rogers went into central midfield he had a better range of passing. Exiled S has hit several nails on heads
