Team of the 80s better than this first XI

Talking to my dad this evening and his view is that the team of the 80's was a better collective than this team. Discuss.

Definitely. For a season and a half they were incredibly tough to beat. Five defeats in 50 league games and not many goals conceded at all. No weak links. Your dad is right.

A different time and place, but as a whole the sum was greater than the individual parts, so I would say yes the 80's for me. I feel it is 180 to that right now.

A great achievement at the time with youth team products and a couple of seasoned veterans with Palace connections to steady the ship.

10 of the 11 that started v Burnley '79 and ended the game as Div 2 Champions came up through the youth ranks. Quite incredible. Outlay for the whole team £100k. Burridge.

Forgive my ignorance, but I thought the team of the eighties only played one game together: v Barnsley in 1979. Then Terry Venables sold and reassembled it at QPR, all in one pre-season, and they never actually got to play together in the eighties (at Palace, at any rate).

Some chat about Venables' wife being an agent?

Venables did **** it up by bringing in Flanagan and Francis before the next season, but they still managed to start well. But unfortunately the chemistry was lost. Apparently Swindlehurst and Walsh fell out over who played along side the ineffective Flanagan, and Francis took the place of the legend Steve Kember.

The team of the 80's were never given the chance to fail first.

I thought Steve Kember was in the team of sixties.

He was - he was brought back in from Leicester for the run in as a steadying influence. It worked out great.

In October 1978, the Eagles used the proceeds of a cup tie with Aston Villa to buy back Steve Kember from Leicester City. Palace profited from his experience and in December were two points clear of Stoke at the top of league table.

That was a great team but they didn’t do much in the top division. We had a Pardew type first half of the season when we got promoted - we were something like third at Christmas but we hardly won at all after that and finished mid-table. The next season we went down. They were dominant when we won the old second division though. I wouldn’t say they were better than the current team. Although, I would quite like to have Burridge in goal and Sansom at left back! And Nicholas in midfield and Gilbert instead of Dann. And Hilaire in for Townsend! Okay they might have been better then

It's all relative to the time and opposition they played but yes the team of the 80s was a great one certainly pulled up more trees than the current bunch

Thats not true.

After winning promotion in the Burnley game, they had one good season in the top flight together.
Early in their first season in the top flight, the team of the eighties found themselves top of the league after thumping Ipswich 4-1. Ipswich were a real force at that time and were packed with big name stars.
Palace faded over the course of the season but still finished a respectable 13th. This team were clearly better than the current side and were mostly young home-grown players.

It was the following season that things de-railed badly. Much of the squad followed Venables to QPR and Palace finished bottom with 18ptts, which I belive was a record low at the time..

The problem comparing now to then is that back then 95% of the players were British. If it was the same now the overall standard of football would be lower than it is, therefore you have to accept it probably wasn't as good back then either (note that back then Ipswich had more foreigners than most teams and were exceptional because of it).

It's like comparing Liverpool of then to Man City (all foreigners) today. Man City would win comfortably.

19 points (or 26 in today's money, it was the last season of 2 points for a win).

Its a myth, not so many of the squad went to QPR as people like to change the facts to fit the myth. Its also forgotten that Bloye pushed Venables out after TV asked the Board for backing when rumours suggested Bloye had approached Howard Kendal to take over as manager.

Yet English teams were very successful in Europe, not sure I would agree with your view

Steve Kember had a knee injury and went to Canada to end his career. Gerry Francis was no longer the force he had been, due to a previous injury but gave us a huge amount of much needed experience. We did not see enough of Flanagan to make a real judgement plus of course Allen came in the following Summer.

We were handicapped by lack of experience the players were highly talented but their youth showed at times. TV was only in his third season as a manager and was still learning his trade. All this while Bloye screwd the club financially.
