He needs to be a bit cleverer. He is so good he is going to be fouled alot without always looking for it which he seems to do of late. He also implores the refs too much which is counter productive. I hope RH has a quiet word as it is becoming a bit embarrassing as well as not doing us any favours.

To be fair, making a back for the defender is a foul. If he hadn't ducked and just stood his ground he might have got a foul.

As for Wilf, I don't think he was treated particularly roughly last night. Didn't get a few decisions, but all the top players deal with that week in, week out. The problem is (like Rooney for example) when defenders know you react, then they try it more and more.

Oliver was fine last night. Nothing major wrong.

Agreed yes, I should have said the Rooney of old. But Wilf hasn't yet. He seemed to go through a phase where he was playing with more of a smile but he's slipped a little this season.

If he can get fouled, smile and channel his sense of injustice into playing (he seems to be able to do it after half-time when the manager has had a word) then he'll become an even better player.

It's not a surprise that the opposition targets the weakness in our best player is it? Being targeted is the biggest compliment you can pay a player. It means they are scared of you.

Harsh but slightly true. In his defense tho he has incredibly quick change of direction and change of pace which gets him fouled constantly. That, and the clumsy challenges to stop him before he can even make those moves is what gets him upset. He still needs to get off his ass instead having a hissy fit. Refs rarely change their minds no matter what you do or say.
I think it's up to the captain to step up immediately to protest in a reasonable manner

Good summary of Oliver right there. He's one of the better refs technically but has spotted that refs who favour the big clubs to a ridiculous extent tend to earn a media rep as the best refs (e.g., Webb, Clattenburg) and sadly he has followed that route.

Wilf definitely deserved his booking but I wondered why he was so angry. Was he being fouled a lot in the first half?. As play was up the other end to me it was sometimes hard to see things that closely. Did the ref let Arsenal get away with a few fouls on Wilf in the first half?

I disagree. Thought he was the best we have had all season. Whether he is usually that good I don't know.

First half he let loads go on both sides, which is consistent and lets the game run. Modern football can be very frustrating for constant fouls for soft incidents.

However, saying that the Wilshire 'foul' in the first half which led to the first goal was a weak one and in the second half there were a few too. But he is human, making decisions on the spot in real time etc.

As for Palace fans, seems we almost always moan about the ref. Even when big decisions aren't given either way. Therefore the OTT focus on it is strange. Comes from the media and something Roy alluded to recently too.

Two of the great winger forwards, Ronaldo and Hazard should be Wilf's role models.

Both get fouled incessantly, but take it as compliments to their superior skills. Rarely do they lose focus or get booked.

Professionalism is as much mental attitude as physical attribute

I didn't see anything wrong with Michael Oliver and thought he got most things right. Just a classic case of home crowd being outraged by everything but the truth is Arsenal were more nimble than us and we did keep making small fouls. There were no bad ones on Wilf and he was going down hopefully.

Good referee.

Definitely one of the better refs but his inconsistency on Thursday was embarrassing.

Constantly ignored fouls on Wilf but gave a free-kick every time Wilshere or Sanchez fell on their arse.

He's had a shocking season overall TBF.

This. Was with the in-laws oop north watching the game and me and the kids were getting more and more wound up by the inconsistency being shown. Obviously didn't look great in front of the in-laws but the brother in-law is a rugby league official and I was just waiting for a backlash from him sticking up for their fellow officials, albeit from a different sport. In the end even he agreed and completely understood why fans get wound up and could see the inconsistency in the night.

So overall not the worst ref and nothing majorly controversial......but the were many occasions where he give Arsenal a foul for one thing, the give Palace F all for the same offence less than 2 minutes later.

And last night weren't Manchester United's feathers ruffled when they were denied a win by a terrible refereeing decision ? - according to their manager! he was wrong by the way.

Do you SERIOUSLY think that referees go out to cheat teams? All the refs that I know are grateful to get through a match with the minimum of controversy - we don't like handing out yellow/red cards unless absolutely necessary. The referees are appointed by a Panel, they don't chose to referee their favourite teams. Referees are assessed on every match. At the top level the scrutiny is crazy. If you work Keltic Eagle?, are you subject to having your every decision immediately analysed on TV, (often by so called experts), or in the papers, immediately played back in slow motion and from different angles?!

Here's a little puzzle for you. Lets assume that Wilf runs through the Man City defence, today, in the centre of the goal , in the Penalty area . There are NO opposition players around him, and he gets brought down by the City Keeper. What would decision would you make as a referee? Is that automatically a penalty and a red card?
