Theese guys are very very well paid professionals if they cant rise to 90 minutes of football in 2 days they should think of getting a office job

Could an Olympic marathon runner do two marathons in 48 hours and be top class in both?

If someone could make that kind of recovery biologically possible they’d be even better paid!

Muscles take longer than that to recover. It’s fatigue, some are better than others but muscle fatigue doesn’t mean someone isn’t putting in the effort. It’s far more physically inhibiting than your jet lag example

Cab's needs a break. He was f***ed after 60 mins yesterday. This game comes too soon for him.

Reidewald, TFM, hennessey and pva were exceptional V city and have earned another start. The CB's pick themselves as other than Delaney they are all that's left!

Its hard on Jimmy mac and schulp but they can come on.

We just need to very careful with Tomkins now. If the medical staff have any concerns over his ability to complete another 90 minutes so quickly without risking injury, then we have to give him the match off.

Concerned about Luka too, ran well over 12 km in the Man City game which is an incredible effort.

I’m still not decided but I’d be tempted to play TFM in the middle and Kelly rb. I think! Kelly played well at rb last week and on this occasion I think the pace of TFM will be invaluable against long. Any other team TFM rb ans Kelly in the middle but long is fast as **** ans TFM is the only guy keeping up with him

Most of the selection is about freshness. Jimmy, schlupp and RLC all coming back in for that reason. Ridewald and Luka start with cabaye replacing the most shattered one. I’d start cabaye but if we got inforced subs due injuries again I’d fear for cabaye for 90 mins. He’d be more effective against tired legs

Same for Townsend. Come on later in the game for whoever needs it, perhaps putting Jimmy in the middle is both ridewald ans Luka struggling

Pva can come on in the same vein with our versatile squad to replace the most tired and a shuffle if neeeded

We’ve just shut out Man City for the first time this season , I very much doubt we’ll be experimenting in the back 4!!!

Midfield 4 looks solid and I agree we need to use the fresher legs. Much depends on who is fit out of those not playing v City.

Could this be the game we see the 451 that many of us want with rlc in front of Luka and cabaye?

No. But top tennis players are often required to play two five-setters with only a day's rest between. And sometimes, even on consecutive days

And they say it’s awful and they can’t play to the best of their ability. I’ve heard Andy Murray say this in interviews and Andre Agassi’s autobiography has a memorable description of how he struggled to be fit to play well enough on consecutive days in the grand slam events. He couldn’t rely on a huge serve to rescue him when fatigued.

People aren’t saying it’s impossible to play 90 mins again, what they’re saying is that it’s wearing on the body to play 90 mins again at the peak of your ability in what’s going to be a highly competitive match.

So, do we switch back in some fresher legs, or plough on with the same team? For example, would it be better to play Mac for 60 mins and then swap him for Cabaye, or the other way around? Can Townsend start for another 90 mins, or should Sako batter away at the Southampton defence for an hour, and then we bring on Townsend to try to get something against their tiring defence? Is RLC fit to play, in which case who do we drop?

These are the sort of decisions facing Hodgson because of this small gap between matches. If it was the usual 5-7 days between matches, then the team would pretty much pick itself because he’d just go for the more obvious best 11.

PVA again if he feels good to play. If not, schlupp.

Midfield is where it gets interesting we've got quite a few options.

I'd go with Jimmy Mac, Jairo and Cabaye/Luka whoever feels fresher.

Front 3 pick themselves unless they're properly knackered.

One thing with this squad is that there is some slight flexibility. If Townsend or Wilf can only come on for last half hour, we start RLC and maybe use PVA as left winger, Sclupp at left back.

I expect Luka/Cabaye will come on to replace the other in second half.

Jimmy Mac needs to start I think so the midfield won't be completely knackered. Any time he plays he brings energy and intensity so he can press while Jairo and the other holding midfielder can sit. I'd probably pick Cabaye - Jairo in the middle. If we wanna keep the ball, they are our best passers by a country mile.
