Fairly sure Sako is injured. According to the radio on Sunday he was due to play against Man City but picked up an injury in training.

He's in Southampton with the team today so expect him on the bench at least

Football is also an impact sport unlike tennis, bruises and knocks as well as tired muscles. 48 hours after a game is when muscles are at their tightest and most painful.

That is indeed true. Iíve a physio friend who confirmed that muscle injuries are often worse 2-3 days after they occur....certainly true when I had a whiplash injury after a fall. Walked around OK the next day, a bit sore but thinking Iíd got away with it. But the morning after that, my back/shoulder were in trauma and I could just about make it from my bed to the bathroom and back.

How many times do you see a player outside the top 10, beat a top player in 5 sets and go out in straight sets himself a day or so later to an average player?

The body takes time to recover.

Football players don't run 26 miles in a match. They don't even run a half marathon in a match.

The tiredness issue can't be underestimated. Hopefully McCarthur, RLC, Sako and Schluup are fit to start.

Football is constant sprints, changes of direction, physical contact and stamina. It may not be the same distance but the excursion in those sprints etc will be a different demand on the body to a marathon, that is why different sportspeople have different body types, to match the demands of the sport.

The poster is comparing a sportsperson doing a sporting event just after another one, not comparing Marathon’s to football. The point stands that other sports dont require people to do them in quick succession, and the ones that do the athletes complain they are not at peak physical condition due to fatique. Its seems most people are just bitter about players being paid alot and dont consider that the sport is gruelling.

I bet must people on here would be ****ed for a week after doing a light 5km.

I believe Cabaye is suspended? He was on 4 yellows before Man City game and got booked in 2nd half. Almost certain he wont play even if not suspended.

Tough for Jairo to play 90 again, so we look light in midfield, particularly with Puncheon injury. Jimmy and RLCs presence is needed tonight, also Sako who could come in for Townsend and massive credit should go to Luka who has been an ever present on this good run of ours barring a 1 game suspension

Perhaps some one could enlighten me on the status of cards received prior to the new year? are the slates wiped clean from the first of January?

Agreed. Assuming everyone is fit to play though I'd go:

-------------------------Hennessey---------------------
TFM----------Tomkins-------------Kelly----------PVA
Andros-------Cabaye-------------Milivojevic-----RLC

5 yellows stopped being a concern after Swansea.

10km became 12km and now 15 km.

Top distance runners will train twice in a day. Anything upto 20 miles, faster than a footballer 6 or 7 days a week.

They will compete in heats, semis and finals in a matter of days at world pace in tournaments.

Different sports etc. Both hard work, but people comparing a footballer playing a couple of games in a week to world class distance athletes are having a giraffe. That's before even starting on top level tour cyclists.
