Very hard to pick 1 player for the vote so I'm not going to.

Small aside though, Hennessey did well again. That first half stop he tipped over was a very, very good save!

Heroes...... they refused to lie down despite being exhausted and with guts and determination got the 3 points in some terrible conditions. The pitch was reminiscent of 20 years ago, cutting up and close to puddling. The wind, the rain, the pitch and then the lack of recovery time combined to make this a poor game of football to watch with nothing for the purist other than maybe Luka's wonderful strike which had all Palace fans ecstatic.

Palace started poorly and TBH looked as if they were feeling sorry for themselves and letting the situation get on top of them. Error after error and the conceding of an early goal was pretty awful, but then it got worse TBH. Luka didn't start well but slowly played his way out of it. Cabaye was wrecked from the start, Macca was sloppy, Benteke invisible. Wilf was clearly trying to make something happen but nothing was working. Same for Andros. Timbo couldn't get things right and Schlupp, who should have been fresh looked pretty awful. The conditions WERE a big factor but Southampton coped and we didn't. But at HT we only 1-0 down and that felt like a result TBH.

Second half we came out and stepped things up. PVA was on for Cabaye which improved legs but nothing else TBH. Roy intervened again and after 64? Mins threw Sako on, moving PVA to LB and resting Schlupp. This made a major difference to our play and our spirit as again he drove on everyone around him, in particular Benteke who had been growing into the game in the 2nd half. Don't understand why but Sako just played as if the conditions were normal while others slipped and staggered. Odd for such a big man but it really worked and we grew stronger. At times we seemed to be 433 and with Andros charging forward too we were getting 4 forward. Crazy on paper I am sure but spot on tonight and Andros and Ben combined to set Macca a chance he slammed into the roof of the net for the equaliser. They were on the ropes and Wilf was playing keepball. A nice interchange between Sako and Andros and a squared ball to Luka saw him strike it firmly into the LH corner, curling away from the keeper. Awesome is an understatement.

Hennessey - 7 - again solid and calm. His kicking gets that extra distance that makes such a difference to where the team sets up and this really can't be underestimated. Safe hands.

Fosu-Mensa - 6 - not his best game as wingers had the edge on this surface. Never gave up though and did his job defensively for the most part. Not seen their goal again yet but looked like a mixup on handover of Long between him and MK but need to see it again.

Kelly -7 - first goal question but otherwise, gutsy and determined.

Tomkins - 7 - as Kelly and on such a good run of form. I hope we wrap him up in cotton wool in between matches.

Schlupp - 5 - possibly generous TBH because he really had a poor game and just seemed over distracted/impacted by the conditions. He should have had energy but showed little and was negative on the ball.

Townsend - 7 - involved in both goals and put a shift in during first half. Second half faded until Sako came on and he shuffled deeper. I still think he is far more effective with things in front of him instead of trying to play with his back to goal and again he showed that.

Cabaye - 6 - looked wrecked and got the impression it was planned he would only do a half. Needs resting in Cup match to get him injury free if poss.

Luka - 7.5 - he started poorly and sluggish but worked himself into the game by HT, pushing through the pain barrier, I assume. Got stronger and stronger and covered a lot of ground alongside Macca.

Macca - 7 - poor first half on the ball but like Luka ran it off and scored a smashing equaliser. Intelligently checked his run to stay onside and then made no mistake blasting it into the roof of the net giving no chance.

Benteke - 6.5 - invisible in the first half and dodged an early chance with poor touch and low confidence. Better in 2nd half and lit up when Sako arrived. Some good flicks, some movement and even a very good turn and shot down to touch and determination. If he can just turn this into goals he will be a hero again. A good assist, winning the ball fairly with a good leap.

Zaha -7 - looked wrecked from the start but never let that stop him trying and if anything he got stronger. His strength and ability to keep the ball in ridiculous situations is amazing. Combo of gutsy and skilful play can't be bad.

Sako - 7 - deserves a special mention because he really does get us going when he comes on. This is as much with his attitude and cajoling as it is with his play and long may it go on because it's working. He just lifts the front players and he works really hard in these cameos. Very good 30 mins or so.

PVA - 6 - did well when he dropped back to LB. steadied the ship on that side.

Hodgson - having watched what he and his team have done, its remarkably simple and effective. Jus because it's straightforward doesn't mean that it's been easy. It's been a remarkable turnaround and is based on a lot of things I am sure but there just seems to be a real clarity around the place about what is expected from everyone and everyone has for them an achievable task. A strong teamwork ethos binds it together under strong and firm leadership. Impressive. Simple but fluffing impressive. Hats off to Roy!

We are playing solid but attractive football given the opportunity. We create openings and chances and goals are coming despite a misfiring CF so far. If CB kicks in anytime soon things could get very rosy. We have coped with a horrible injury list against the odds.

Thought we would be knackered after City and feared the worst when they scored, think Hodgson decided to play defensive first half to save energy and have a go second half when we can bring on fresh legs.

Hennessy 8 not a fan but excellent today
Schlupp 7
Tomkins 8
Kelly 7
Fosu-Mensah 7
Cabaye 6 (clearly knackered / injured)
McArthur 9 MOM was everywhere, scored, made a difference in both halves.
Luka 8 amazing goal!
Townsend 7
Zaha 7 some ridiculous skills but no final ball today
Benteke 7 great assist but thought he was poor first half
subs:
PVA 7 improved when he came on
Sako 8 usual strength and enthusiasm but some good skills too!

Hennessey unlucky not to get an assist tonight too - utter sitter skied by Wilf!

Im sure it was a stonewall pen for a foul on Wilf too, when he ket his feet. We were already ahead, it didnt matter but maybe he was worried about going down after recent comments in the media.

Thought Townsend and Tomkins played really well (not that everyone else was bad).

Deserved the three points, weather was atrocious both for the game and the drive back.

Great night

Fully agree. Luka is vital to us and, IMHO, the prime reason why we stayed up last season. McArthur is our most consistent performer the last three years and I remain amazed how many wanted to sell him last summer. Their fitness kept us in it.

Despite Glazier Fan's OP, I think Kelly is a fully capable CB and don't fear his partnership with Tomkins. I fear only that one of them will be injured.

Sako looks so much fitter and more determined. A viable option from the bench right now.

Benteke did play well, as did Andros, who had a hand in both goals.

TFM is developing but I'm not even dreaming we will keep him. Hennessey did okay and was left helpless for the Saints goal.

Cabaye needs competition for his place. His engine is on the way out.

Zaha ( again, disagreeing fully with Glazier Fan ) was quiet today. We actually managed to score two goals without his direct input.

We were a different team second half. This team knows how to fight.

Made it home after battling storm Eleanor up the M3. A poor game of football but the character shown by the lads tonight was simply incredible. We looked completely out on our feet in the first half and could easily have been more than 1-0 down. However, second half we somehow found some extra energy and there was only ever one team in it and we should have scored more than two. Make no mistake about it Sako won us the game tonight. The terrible conditions and the direct style of play encouraged by Roy going to 4-4-2 in the second half means that everything was tailor made for him to almost single handedly dominate the game.

This has the feeling of a massive three points tonight. You cannot question the character of the side and that they are playing for the manager and for me this alone will see us stay up. COYP!

We have been relying on Cabaye and Zaha for far too long. It's great to see other players stepping up and our squad is starting to look a bit better. We still desperately need another striker and keeper though.

Only seen the highlights but jimmy Mac seemed involved in most good things. Could have easily given away a penno late on with a tug on Gabbiadini’s shirt though

Yes - that’s how I would call it. We must sort out a new contract for Jimmy Mac. He is so valuable.

And I think Southampton are in deep shit. I have never seen the place so devoid of anything positive.

Roy has got a total grip on our squad now, and seems to be able to get the best out of everyone. Can he do something with mutch I wonder? Anyway, thought schlupp had a good first half and was probably our best player in a scrappy leggy 45. Second half the tactical switch made a massive difference, and then the introduction of Sako, who has been very impressive recently, won us the game.

Jimmy was immense. Luka has the Palace bug. Andros has the most ridiculous engine. Benteke had a good game.
