As someone who lives in North America ( currently minus 20c and snowing in Montreal) it would be wonderful if , before adding anymore “bells and whistles” FIFA could do something about timing the game. A clock that everyone can see that stops every time there is a stoppage in the game. If an ice hockey game, infinitely faster than football, can be timed surely we can time a football game. The sight of a man holding up a little plaque showing a MINIMUM number of minutes is so unprofessional it Is embarrassing. As the Americans love to point out “Soccer”is the only game that invents time.

VAR has been a disaster in the Aussie A-League, but the concept is good. Those in charge of it, however, are really not. A few weeks ago one team had 2 players sent off because the nerd at the computer decided a tackle deserved more than the yellow the ref had issued.

I hope if/when it comes in to English football full time there are better referees on the pitch and clued up analysts in the back, because right now the refs aren't up to the job in real time and it doesn't inspire confidence that those making the review decisions will be, either.

Shall we stop the game for tv adverts too, and only restart when the advert is over?

I think technology has made tennis and cricket both worse to watch, especially cricket. The farcical long waits over an LBW review take a lot of the excitement out. Tennis has been much less badly affected, but I'm just not keen on the umpire/ line judges being overruled by players and tech. It seems disrespectful. It is also really strange in tennis, as line judges are now clearly redundant (other than on courts without the tech).

Hate to see it intrude into football. It won't work well as people have said above, due to the high level of discretion/opinion involved in many decisions (fouls, bookings, cards, handballs), but the powers that be (and their expensive contractors who supply/run the tech) will force it to 'work' and will impose it on us, I'm sure of that. Also not sure what triggers a review? The info says 'only clearly wrong' decisions will be reviewed - who gets to judge what was 'clearly wrong' and how often will he/she do this? What it if is clearly wrong but unimportant, such as the ball not being in the corner quadrant, or a foul throw, or similar?

Hoping it goes disastrously wrong (in our favour) on Monday.

Not sure about that. The NFL manages to turn an hour's worth of football into a three hours + event to accommodate sponsors

Presumably with the VAR delays, it means the Brighton fans are going to miss the last 20 minutes of the game, rather than their customary ten?

I'm all for VAR and has been for many years BUT it needs to be done correctly. Perhaps it will take some years until it reaches it's final form after some time of trial and error, but it has to start somewhere.

I think the 4th official will prove critical in this setup because he has to have direct access to the footage and then alert the ref to come have a look. It should only be used when really needed and penalties, violent behaviour and fouls committed prior to a goal is fine for me. It will work but it'll take some time getting used to

Offside is any part of the body except for hands and arms, so have a look again and it should be obvious

There's no way we're going to take any advice on the game from North America. Get to the back of the queue.

It can only work for cut and dried incidents.
You only need to look at the recent penalty decisions where people can't decided after watching from 5 different angles in ultra high definition.
Can't see it working myself.

Just seen this mentioned on BBC News. Tonight is turning into quite a curious fixture all told, the actual match being some way down the list after all the other noise surrounding it

I travel a round journey of 18 hours door to door for each home game. The last train home for me is 1830hrs from Euston. With the game ending at 1655 if I get out sharp and selhurst isn't too chaotic we get to Euston about 1800hrs so enough time to grab snacks, beers and find a seat.
Bring in your north America idea of stopping the clock every 10 seconds then I might as well kiss my season ticket goodbye as I'd be leaving at half time. Thats what I'm dreading.
