Very sad news. Great player. Shame that side never won anything.

terribly sad. Still a relatively young guy. Could be a tour de force, a really powerful and quick forward who came up the hard way through non league. As I heard it a scout saw him bundle ball and keeper into the net together and was sold straight away.. The sort of forward any fan would appreciate and whose popularity crossed club divides.

RIP big man

Very, very sad. A true CF. What West Brom would give to have him leading the line now.

Lovely tribute from the BBC’s Pat Murphy

In all my decades of covering Midlands football, there has been no figure more admired or loved among we reporters than Cyrille Regis. He scored goals we dreamed of while lying in the bath, routed the racists, respected the fans - and smiled. Always. RIP

Obviously has no affinity to us but so very sad none the less, not because he was such a great footballer, but because it’s so young to die.

At least Cyrille won the FA Cup with Coventry. Was a classic.

I doubt very much it was his talent keeping him out of the side

I actually went "noooo!" out loud when I saw this. What a terrible shame.
England had a few decent strikers at the time, it was Keegan, Francis and Woodcock keeping him out of the team, with occasional appearances from the likes of Garry Birtles. Cyrille was a bit more of an archetypal "English" striker - Nat Lofthouse, Stan Mortensen, Jeff Astle sort of player. They weren't really in favour at that time, though mark Hateley got a few caps.

Interesting that there is a Palace connection.

Ronnie Allen who captained the Palace team that originally won promotion to the Second Division in '63/64 recommended Cyrille who was then playing for our local non-league club Hayes when he was Chief Scout for WBA.

Can I suggest you add Paul Mariner and Gary Linneker to the list
