Prostrate anyone have it /had it?

One of my best friends is about to start radiation/Chemo and had to cancel their "trip of a lifetime " to Oz for now. I was diagnosed myself about 4 years back and seeing as pretty much every Premier League manager seems to be supporting it with a lapel badge thought it be worth discussing?

Had my prostate removed almost two years ago, still have to have PSA checks every 6 months to make sure cancer hasn’t returned.
Skint is right, from 45/50 years, you should check the levels at least yearly. Your GP will know when to refer you, normally over level 10. Generally if you start peeing a lot, especially at night, it points to prostate problems. Don’t ignore it or you’ll regret it further on down the line

Grandad passed from this last year and seeing him and the pain he went through in his final days is enough for me! I have ran two London marathons for Prostate Cancer UK so something quite personal to me. The charity has a huge support which is good to see.

PSA every 6 months has been fine, but keep an eye out for other associated prostate problems.

PSA is a limited test for prostate cancer diagnosis; what Prostate Cancer UK (a charity) is doing is working to establish a better diagnostic test that detects more cancers.

White men are a 1:8 risk of prostate cancer; black men 1:4.

The PSA test is very good for checking on raised levels post-removal.

"Your GP might make an appointment for you to see a specialist if your PSA level is 3 ng/ml or higher. But this is just a guide. Your GP might decide you don’t need to see a specialist if there are other reasons why your PSA level is raised. In this case, they might suggest having another PSA test in the future to see if your PSA level changes, rather than seeing a specialist straight away.

Your GP might decide to refer you to a specialist if your PSA level is lower than 3 ng/ml but you have a higher risk of prostate cancer for other reasons, such as your family history.

Your GP should discuss all of this with you to help you decide what to do next."

The one thing to bear in mind for you younger folk is that after a radical prostatectomy, your knobbing and wanking days are over (pardon my French), so if you still wish to be fully functional, radiotherapy may be preferred, or radioactive seeding.
There are ways to get around this, but I won't go into these on this site, (there are plenty of references on websites). Generally I find four fingers or even a fist will do the trick !
Good luck to anyone going through symptoms, and if advice required, you are welcome to PM me.
