What improvement and what benefits do you expect to see?

Youth football is dominated by 2 clubs in this country. The FA Youth cup, is it 4 years in a row it have been an Man City Vs Chelsea final?

2010-11 was the last year Chelsea did not make the final.

Last 3 years the 2 clubs have dominated the U18 league as well even though some of their eligible players will play up in the U23s. However look at how many players make it from those squad now? They have the very best youngsters from across the globe usually and even they struggle to get them through at PL level.

Pep only have 6 players on his bench because he didn't have anyone else! It was a ridiculous comment but shows how far off he thinks you youth players at City (who have many of the best) are from PL football.

Everyone I speak to - 'feeder' clubs and the kids who play in those teams; those running Academies at other clubs; scouts; coaches who work in our Academy; and even kids on contract at our Academy - tell you the same thing, our Academy is rubbish. Not shit, just rubbish.

That's disappointing, but on the other hand this obsession with Academies is just another expression of Modern Football. We should do a Huddersfield; much more ethical - and honest.

When EPPP started the cost models contained within the launch packs stated that a Cat 2 Academy would cost between £1m and £1.8m a season to run.
Allowing for inflation since then and fact that costs in London are high then assume that it now costs £2.1m a season for our Academy tops.
About one third of that cost will be covered by Premier League as they contribute from central fund towards running each Academy.
So cost to Palace is about £1.4m a season tops.
Or putting it another way, about what Cabaye gets paid in 4 months.
Sales will have funded a lot of the running costs - Clyne, Scannel, Moses, Zaha.

Combine with the fact that we've been in relegation fight for the last couple of seasons, we don't have the luxury of rotating in youth players. If we are safe in mid-table with less to play for, I have no doubt Roy will be more incline to give opportunities in less stressful games. See for example McTomaney who played for Man U on the weekend against Huddersfield.

So what is the point? Huddersfield have ditched theirs, why do we keep ours?

As a season ticket holder for 48 years I have seen the best of our academy ( The famous 1979 winners being the best ) But back to my question what is the point of spending millions to produce absolutely nothing?
And sorry to be a pedant but we won the FA Youth Cup in 1977 and 1978. Not 1979. I enjoyed the 77 win much more cos final over 2 legs so was great to see such a large crowd at Selhurst. I didn't enjoy 78 so much as had to traipse to Highbury for one leg final at neutral venue.

Do we spend much on it?

Bringing through young players through an academy or other avenues seems to have been completely neglected for years.

We seemed to want to do it for 5 minutes when FDB came but then realised that we didnít actually have any young players and it was abandoned.

Absolutely and by definition because of how long it takes to establish and raise the quality of the conveyor belt of talent.

You can't expect to produce players from the academy straight into the premier league. When we return to the championship the academy will come into its own again, if we never do then it will create players for other teams and give local lads a gateway into the game in the lower leagues.
Even Wilf needed time in the championship to learn his craft.

I seem to recall someone on here saying a friend worked at Orient's academy and was surprised when a similar role at Palace came up, the salary was significantly lower.

If true I would argue 'why don't we spend enough on the Academy?' is the pertinent question, not too much. Especially when one first teamer more than pays for the investment given transfer fees these days.

Will it?

Obviously the club as a whole benefits financially from selling a home-grown player, and I accept I have no idea about how such things are divided up, but I'd have thought the "cut" the Academy might get from any sale is insignificant compared to the proportion that goes to adding to / sustaining the first team squad, even with the TV money floating around.

Happy to stand corrected if that's bollocks, of course!

Agree totally, we should try and poach whoever runs Southampton's academy
