Lombardo

According to the great News Shopper this week, God wont ever be coming home. Their reporter won a competition to see Juve/Lazio and met the great man. He asked if he would ever come back if paid a lot and Lombardo just laughed.

He was probably laughing at the idea of Palace paying a lot seeing as we never got round to paying the first time.

I'll no doubt be accused of heresy for this but here goes nothing...

This story does not surprise me. Lombardo was a joy to watch on occasion in a Palace shirt and of course I never thought that we would get such a class player to the club.

However, over-stepping ourselves and signing people like him was the main (only?) reason that we're in the trouble we're in.

He has always been injury-prone for a start. We must have known that when we signed him (mind you, given that the same is true of Padovano, Warhurst and a few others, perhaps it was a policy decision?).

Despite us comforting ourselves with the thought that he "loved it" at Palace and would have run through a brick wall for us he's looking decidedly content to be back in Italy, no doubt on big bucks, and NOT PLAYING. What a ******* waste!

How much exactly does the guy "want it" if he's content to while away his last couple of years in Lazio's stiffs or on the bench? Not enough is what I say.

If we learn any lesson from this whole shambles, just the one, please can it be that Palace is not the right environment for "big-time charlies".

Yes, like everybody else I was seduced by the thought of Italian internationals plying their trade with us but that's exactly what it was - seduction, and I for one have learned my lesson.

Give me our whole-hearted kids who have aspirations but not ideas above their station any day!

I have to disagree with you a little there. Yes he was too old and injury prone but he always put his all into playing for us. Do you remember him backtracking Giggs and winning the ball several times when we were 3-0 down? Also, how many of these imports would have taken the managers position? he made it clear that he didnt really want it but put himself in a position to be made a national laughing stock in the media and gavce it his best go. The performances against Newcastle,Derby and Liverpool away were better than most of the other games we had that season. The reason he left was because he wasnt getting paid and chose to go back to a much bigger clubwhere he could get some wages and he has done more than warm the bench for them.

IMO Lombardo was a great success for Palace, in his case I believe we got what we paid for (or didn't pay for!), a world-class player who added that bit of class to the team.

It could be that had he not been injured training with Italy, we might have stayed up; up to that point we were holding our own quite well.

Where it all went wrong was when we got carried and got Padovano, bid £6m for Signori, basically we thought we could do a Chelsea.

Its a shame he laughed at coming back though, I would have thought he would want first team football.

I know what you're saying guys and I cheered Lombardo to the rafters whilst he was with us and when he played, he mostly did the business BUT...

...to say that his stint with us was a great success just doesn't stack up I'm afraid.

He played about a season's worth of games in two seasons; we were effectively relegated by February in his first season with us; we became a laughing stock when we made him manager (especially considering that he could still speak hardly a word of English); we lost a fortune (on paper) when we had to let him go for nothing; his wages were totally out of the league of a club like Palace in the first place.

I loved watching him and I think he's a great player in the right team but I don't ever want to see us make such a mistake again unless and until we can afford to!

Lombardo was a good player, and we saw some class football from him. Remember Leeds away? But we did not ultimately get full value because he spent so long injured. The decision to ask him to become manager was bizarre particularly when, as has been pointed out, he spoke little English. I remember him on one occasion miming and pointing to whoever was about to take a free kick outside the opposition penalty box so that the whole of Selhurst Park, including the opposition, knew what was coming. I liked him, but I agree he is unlikely to come back. When he laughed, did he understand the question?

I spoke to Lombardo in a restaurant in Rome, I was however on a mobile at Cambridge away (remember that night, cold, wet, miserable).
Anyway, he said he wasn't coming back, did like his time in London and thought the Palace fans were a bit crazy. He wasn't exactly used to the hero status. He's just a bit part player in Rome, even if he does love it there. He just hangs out with his mates Mancini and Ravanelli. I recently bought his shirt at auction from the Lazio web site, I was the only bidder. When I wore my Lombardo Palace shirt to a game in Rome, they thought I was mental. Shows how far apart Palace and Lazio really are..... Top bloke though........

A bit late but I only just noticed this thread. Agree with most of what's been said but especially with the points made in Gooders' second post.

If all of our signings were as astute as the Lombardo one we would never have been relegated and who knows what could have happened?

To the extent that the financial mess came on us because of overpaying players, it was because those players were not able to demonstrate they were worth the wages by bringing on-field results.

I think a few more of Lombardo quality would have changed that.

My son decided to watch the video of our last season in the Premier League last night to cheer himself up (!).

It was an eerie experience - they hardly included any of our defeats so watching it you could be forgiven for wondering how on earth we got relegated.

The things I noticed were that Miller was overweight when he first joined, never mind when he left; that Warhurst looked quite bright early on and scored a couple of good goals; that for Curcic to be an out-of-work, drug-using footballer is a tragedy beyond measure; that Padovano never did look much cop; that we never should have unloaded Edworthy; and finally that Lombardo was pure class.

Like I said before mind, I've never disputed that last point - I just think we over-reached ourselves signing him in the first place.

Yes, its probably true we couldnt afford him. Wasnt that Goldberk fellow supposed to be paying his wages? Yes, we have got good honest players now and if only Ashley Cole would/could join us permanently! But, I enjoyed seeing Lombardo at the Palace, singing that song and seeing him wave his arms in frustration in that Italian style was fun while it lasted. I do just wonder if we had stuck just with him and let his mate go to Middlesboro would it all have been different?
Ashley Cole will be a big star one day soon. Wouldnt it be great if it was with Palace.

The reason Lombardo laughed is probably the following:

Manicini is probably going to be Erikson's assistant next year until he gets his managers licence (In Italy you need to have a licence for you to manage, thats why Platt didn't get the Samp job), and then Vialli will probably join him when he gets his licence and Erikson leaves.
Then with Lombardo having played with both Vialli and Mancini when at Samp, and with just Vialli at Juve, he is probably in line for a coaching job at Lazio, with Vialli and Mancini joint managers, or Mancini as assistant to Vialli.

I just hope Palace dont sign any more Padovanos. The english league is getting too cluttered up with foreign rejects who cant hack it in their own leagues so come to England for an easy ride.

Will he get a medal?

Only if they don't operate a similar system to us - doesn't a player have to have made 14 or 15 appearances to qualify for a medal over here?
