If true, I think it's a sad day for Irish football. Perhaps he should have gone after the WC, but I still think he should have been given the opportunity to manage the team for the next couple of years.
A worst of all, it could lead to Roy Keane being back in the side ![]() |

Can't say I blame him.
Good luck to the fella.

Not yet - according to BBC:
Mick McCarthy's six-year reign as Republic of Ireland boss is set to come to an end in the next 24 hours, according to reports. McCarthy will hold crunch talks with Football Association of Ireland bosses in Dublin on Tuesday evening or on Wednesday. He is in the capital city to promote his World Cup diaries. Should McCarthy resign? Have your say McCarthy's World Cup preparations were thrown into chaos by his much-publicised row with Manchester United's Roy Keane. The rift with Keane has polarised support in Ireland for both the coach and his former captain. A disastrous start to the Euro 2004 campaign - defeats by Russia and Switzerland - has done little to halt support for the pro-Keane camp. And McCarthy has revealed that criticism levelled at him is now getting to his players. It is now increasingly unlikely that McCarthy will be at the helm for the Republic's next game against Greece on 20 November. Pay-off The only apparent sticking point is over compensation clauses in his contract.

Its not 100% sure yet. Announcement of what happened in the meeting tonight. O'Leary and Kinnear are also in the frame. All managers mentioned so far I would be happy being Palace manager (including Mick) in the future (if things went wrong blady bla give TF more time just saying it)

Contenders
John Toshack: The former Welsh and Liverpool great now appears to be the front-runner for the Republic job.
The 53-yearold Cardiff-born manager has done the rounds, particularly in Europe. Toshack is now back for his third spell at Spanish side Real Sociedad, where he is now general manager. He also managed Real Madrid twice, Deportivo La Coruna, Besiktas JK Istanbul and St Etienne (manager) as well as having a short spell as Welsh boss. He played 246 times for Liverpool scoring 96 goals. David O'Leary: The former Leeds boss would be another of the FAI's main targets. The 42-year-old O'Leary, who won 67 for the Republic, would be a popular choice with the fans. O'Leary was a colussus during Jack Charlton's reign and scored the penalty in the famous World Cup shoot-out against Romania that took Ireland through to the 1990 quarter-finals. Born in Dublin, the big defender played 558 league games for Arsenal spanning 18 years. O'Leary was linked with West Ham United and Sunderland, but is still waiting to return to the game after his Elland Road sacking last June. John Aldridge: Another former Republic of Ireland legend who has turned from scoring goals to attempting to make them for others. He scored 63 goals in104 appearancess for the Anfield side with whom he won a League and Cup medal in successive seasons. Merseyside-born Aldridge, 43, was a player and manager of Tranmere before standing down in 2001. He has been concentrating on media work since, although the former hitman tried to get back into management when he had talks with FAI side Bohemians last year. Joe Kinnear: At present Joe Kinnear, 53, is in charge of Luton Town who are mid-table in the Nationwide Division Two. An ebullient character, the former Republic of Ireland and Tottenham defender always had a craving to manage his country for whom he won 26 caps. Dublin-born Kinnear steered Wimbledon from obscurity to Division One, before bad health saw him step down. On his recovery he took over at Oxford United before moving to the Hatters in February 2001.

I can't see either Toshack or O'Leary taking the job. The wage is sh:t and so are the facilities. Though I was never 100% behing Big Mick, I can't think of anyone else half decent who'd take the job.
Unfortunately it could well be that we end up with some never-was like Harry Bassett ![]()

What about Peter Reid as short term so he can groom Niall Quinn for the job in a few years?

Highs and Lows
Overall, I wouldn't want this guy to leave:
1996, 2 February - Leaves Millwall to take over from Jack Charlton as Republic of Ireland boss. 1996, 27 March - The Republic lose 2-0 to Russia at Landsdowne Road in McCarthy's first match in charge. 1997, 15 November - After finishing 10 points behind Romania in their World Cup qualifying group, McCarthy's side go out 3-2 on aggregate to Belgium in the play-offs. 1999, 10 October - A place at Euro 2000 is just 12 seconds away when Goran Stavrevski equalises for Macedonia in Skopje, and the Republic are consigned to the play-offs. After drawing 1-1 with Turkey in Dublin, an ill-tempered 0-0 draw in Bursa sees McCarthy's men knocked out. 2000, 8 October -The World Cup campaign begins well as a Matt Holland equaliser in Lisbon gives the Republic a 1-1 draw against Portugal, following a 2-2 draw against Holland in Amsterdam. 2001, 1 September - A play-off place is virtually guaranteed with a magnificent 1-0 win over Holland in Dublin. 2001, 15 November - The Republic seal a place at the World Cup finals with a 0-0 draw against Iran in Tehran, after winning the first leg 2-0 in Dublin. 2002, 5 January - McCarthy is named Irish Sports Personality of the Year. 2002, 12 February - Roy Keane welcomes the FAI's decision to offer McCarthy a new contra ct. "All the players are pleased he has decided to stay on for two more years and hopefully we can have another successful qualifying campaign when the European Championship begins," said Keane. 2002, 17 May - The FAI are "delighted" to announce that McCarthy will stay on as coach for at least another two years. 2002, 23 May - Keane is sent home from Japan after falling out with manager Mick McCarthy in a clear-the-air meeting with the whole squad. "I cannot and will not tolerate being spoken to with that level of abuse being thrown at me, so I sent him home," said McCarthy. 2002, 16 June - The Republic go out of the World Cup on penalties against Spain in the last 16. 2002, 18 June - McCarthy and his team receive a heroes' welcome from around 100,000 people on their return to Dublin. 2002, 7 September - The Euro 2004 campaign begins badly with a 4-2 defeat to Russia in Moscow. 2002, 16 October - A shock 2-1 defeat to Switzerland ends the Republic's run of 18 matches unbetaen at home, and heaps further pressure on McCarthy. 2002, 5 November - McCarthy quits following talks with the FAI.

How about making Roy Keane Player-Manager? I think that'd be quite funny in the dressing room as he argued with himself.
Hopefully the rest of the Ireland squad will either retire from international football en masse as soon as Keane's picked or just kick ten tons of sh*t out of him on the training pitch... ![]()

Also Ireland were ranked about 40th (I know FIFA's system is pants) when McCarthy joined and now comfortably in the top 16 - very important when it comes to seeding in major competitions. By any measure he has been successful - it makes you wonder what a manager has to do to stay in a job. Mind you, I'm sure he won't be short of offers.

I'm not going to forgive Roy Keane lightly if he returns. Now if he goes back he'll play with a squad he insulted who despise him.

You may not forgive Roy Keane but the whole Irish media seems to have.
The pressure on McCarthy has been immense since the Russia result. All the papers have basically been saying they want Roy Keane back. Well they have Keane back now so i hope they lose every match from now until forever cos it will serve them right. This is an absolute disgrace. |

If that thug plays for Ireland again, I will not support them.
Mick was (and is) a gent. Ireland have gone from the Wimbledon of the world stage (circa 1990) to being the MKDons now. Useless FAI to55ers. ![]()
