CPIFC Match Report

Palace Internet 1 Arsenal Supporters 4.
Saturday. 9th December 2000.

****************

Yet again, Duppas Hill was in 'Monsoon Season' as the two sets of players arrived for this Supporters League match on Saturday morning. Thunder and lightning provided an extreme backdrop as pair by pair, players retreated to the shelter of their cars as they waited for the groundsman to return from whatever it was he decided was so important that he'd leave twenty two lads standing around in the rain for half an hour waiting for him to be kind enough to open the changing rooms and facilities which are of course paid for in advance. Thankyou Croydon Council.

A pre-match chat revealed that last season's Supporters League Champions Arsenal are regularly 'kicked a bit' by their opposition, 'because we won the league last year'. 'No, it's because you are Arsenal' I thought.

So hampered by injuries and suspect absenteeism, Palace somehow managed to field eleven players, including two newcomers helping out for the day, Mark Pink & Matthew Austin (thanks for helping us out guys).

Arsenal took the initiative straight from the start with an enthusiastic young midfield exploiting the wide spaces as Palace struggled to make any impression and were faced with an early battle to gain any real possession.

As Arsenal trudged back for a restart after notching their first goal on thirteen minutes, Palace desperately switched players around in a bid to find a formation to stifle Arsenal's driving play. Nicky Amato was moved up front to join usual lone-forward Ben Couchman in an attempt to make the ball stick as Palace continuously searched for the long outlet ball upfield.

Before the central midfield pairing of Ash Woodham, and Andy davidson could adjust, Arsenal had doubled their tally. 17 minutes and two down. This was going to be a battle.

Stirred by rallying calls from Palace defensive duo Stephen Chapman & Chris Lansdown, Palace dug deep and with the assistance of a few biting tackles, managed to gain short periods of possession and mount some swift attacks of their own. After 10 minutes or so of this fightback Palace got their reward when Left midfielder Paul Hepburn netted with a sweetly struck shot on 32 minutes.

Hepburn: Sweetly Struck Shot

Palace tails were up and more good work from Hepburn resulted in him being scythed down just inside the area and the referee pointed to the spot. Couchman, Palace's first choice penalty taker grabbed the ball confidently but it was to no avail as his straight shot was parried by the Arsenal custodian before smothering the rebound at Couchman's feet. This proved to be a devastating blow from which the home side would not recover.

Couchman: Missed Penalty.

Half time came and went and Taylor-Nye endured a busy spell in the Palace goal, making a string of fine saves. It was a rearguard action and virus-hit Player-Manager Graeme Hindshaw deserves special mention for his efforts at left back when he should have been on the sidelines in his Sheepskin and Flat-Cap recovering.

Arsenal dominated the remainder of the match as the Palace defence were pushed further and further backwards in an attempt to cope with the pacy Arsenal forward and 'Thierry Henry' lookalike. This proved to be the making Palace's problems as the gap between defence and attack widened and widened leaving Woodham and Davidson chasing shadows in the centre of midfield.

Arsenal scored twice either side of a scrappy period when Palace's frustration got the better of them and got stuck in to the Arsenal players a little too keenly. Arsenal responded with like and fortunately, we just about avoided any unnecessary scenes, thanks to one or two wise words from a couple of players on each side.

At 4-1 down Palace settled on damage limitation and played out the last ten minutes feeling rather sorry for themselves. They were outplayed and outfought on the day and can have no complaints. They'll be looking for a distinct improvement on both performance and result next time round. And an appearance from the absentees would help !

Journo Ash's Palace M.O.M. goes to Andy Davidson for his ceaseless running and battling for the Palace cause.
