English sport
We are really going through something of a sporting renaissance at the moment in England. The football team are playing well, the cricket team is looking great, winning the last 4 or 5 series and the rugby team look like world beaters. Will this continue or is it just building false hope that will come crashing down soon?

We're not doing well, eg look at Australia, lower population, but still much more successful. We're just doing better than in the last decade when we've been an embarassment.

3/4 full!
I am very optimistic about the future of English sport. Football World Cup winners soon. Rugby World champs. And of course Palace in the Premiership. All within 10 years. |

No.. I was getting a little bit carried away. But the way England (football) are playing at the moment and with all the great young players in the U-21's or who played in the 2nd half there has got to be cause for optimism. Beckham, Gerrard, J. Cole, Hargreaves.
As for the Rugby, England are at a really high level right now. It's a shame the next World Cup isn't for a while yet. Im not a big fan of cricket, but I do know England are on the up and if we are succesful in that sport too, then it's another positive. And I also think that Palace, under Jordan, are heading in the right direction. |

If we put as much tax-payers money into sport as the Aussies (instead of blowing it all away on things like the National Unhealth Service for example), we would be at least as successful as they - we've better "raw material" you see !
But as someone said on another thread : "it's only sport". We wouldn't want to be one of those pathetic countries carrying a national inferiority complex and needing to constantly prove something on the sports field would we ?? |

On the subject of English cricket, we are surprisingly 3rd in the world rankings. After languishing near the bottom (even being overtaken by Zimbabwe I believe) this is cause for celebration alone.
However its not as simple as it may appear.. Our "score" is about 1.06 compared to South Africa in 2nd with 1.33 and Australia in 1st with 1.65. When you consider the six teams below us are all on about 0.95, the gap between us and the top two is significant still. |

As we now head into summer sports I don't think the same can be said for our tennis players or our golfers!!!!
Crickets big test will take place with the series against the Aussies and I just hope the boys continue to play with the same passion showed over the recent series!!!!!!!! |

Don't worry, it wont last long, its probably just a phase. England will go back to the usual losing ways soon enough
