Alan Smith back in football?
Well, what's the betting after this just appeared on the newswires.
Fulham are searching for an experienced manager to act as a part-time advisor to their rookie boss Chris Coleman. The new Cottagers chief, 32, was installed as Jean Tigana's successor on Thursday but has just seven months' coaching experience since his injury-enforced retirement. The former Welsh international has only just completed his UEFA 'B' coaching badge and is now studying for his 'A' qualification. So the club have backed his plan to recruit a veteran boss, expected to be out-of-work at the moment, to beef up his backroom staff. He will work on a part-time basis alongside Coleman, probably for two or three days a week. Coleman will personally select his advisor. He is expected to choose a manager he admired during his playing days, which ended in October following a 21-month fitness battle after breaking his right leg in a car crash. Fulham are in no desperate hurry to appoint their new man but do plan to have him in place when pre-season training starts at the start of July. The untidy departures of Tigana, his assistant Christian Damiano and fitness coach Roger Propos left big holes in the club's coaching set-up. Coleman was promoted from coach and named reserves boss Steve Kean as his new number two. Goalkeeping coach Gerry Peyton is also on the backroom staff. Coleman is in Austria today checking arrangements for a possible pre-season tour - but returns to London tomorrow and will then turn his attention to identifying the man he wants to be his advisor.

Surely no one will employ that charlatan again!
On the day Francis was sacked, I was celebrating in the pavilion at the Oval when Smithy walked in. An immediate reminder of just how many horrors are out there.

Haven't Fulham dumped him once already. Why would they want him back - why would anybody come to think of it.

Mr Smith was manager of Wycombe AFTER he departed our club on the first occasion in 1995. After his subsequent departure following the termination of his contract by Mr Jordan, I understand Mr Smith was involved in coaching duties in the Middle East but alas I have NO information as to his whereabouts at the present time. Mr Smith WAS at Fulham I believe prior to his second spell as manager at our beloved club.Mr Smith was in charge of the Youth "Setup" and had a number of coaches under his command.

I was on the same flight as Smith when I recently travelled to Sydney to see the final Ashes test. I was going to have a word with him but was concerned that had I introduced myself as a Palace fan, within the confined space of an aircraft, he might well panic and bolt for the door. The fact that he was holidaying in the antipodes at that time of year would suggest that he was not working in football at the time. For the record, he was also travelling economy class. And I though he was supposed to be some sort of property tycoon!?

i was at the charlton v fulham game the other weekend and i could see him clearly sitting in the directors box - i think he thought it a bit weird as i spent most the game giving the one eyed idiot evil looks.

Entirly plausible to me.
Coleman and Southgate were always thick with Svengali Smith. It fascinates me that Julian Gray is slagged off, basically because he finds it difficult to motivate himself under our string of ineffective managers, and probably is impatient to get some career momentum. Coleman and Southgate in an identical situation after the Smith relegation, virtually went on strike (like the pieman), but are hailed by most on here, as "Palace legends" and potential Palace managers. ![]() |

Didn't Alan Smith's last stint at Fulham come to a premature end when he was caught fornicating with a younger female member of staff at the club's training ground?

Or how about Stevie C?
Cyclops is still living in Purley, I saw him crossing the road on Friday morning walking his dog - I swerved... but I missed him.

from today's Guardian
"The former Crystal Palace manager Alan Smith has emerged as a front-runner to work as Chris Coleman's assistant at Fulham. Fulham confirmed yesterday that the newly appointed Coleman, the youngest manager in Premiership history at 32, is seeking an experienced assistant to advise him. Smith, who worked with Coleman during their days together at Crystal Palace, was also a coach at Fulham when Karl-Heinz Riedle managed the club in 2000. Other candidates for the role include Ray Harford, who worked with Coleman in their days at Blackburn, and Roy Evans, who also worked with Riedle at Fulham. |
