Saddlers Target Akinbiyi
WALSALL boss Colin Lee is eyeing a move for much maligned Crystal Palace striker Ade Akinbiyi. Lee is unhappy with his lack of firepower at The Bescot Stadium after the departure of Brazilian marksman Junior for Derby County. "We lost Junior over the summer and we've been trying hard to replace him," said Lee. "We've just got to get on with it but it doesn't take a genius to see we are lacking an end product." The Saddlers boss is looking for added attacking options and has targeted Akinbiyi to fill the void. The 28-year-old has struggled to make his mark at Palace after another difficult spell with Leicester City, and has been told that he will not be offered a new deal at Selhurst Park. Despite the talents of Paul Merson available, Lee believes he still needs a man to put the chances away. Should he move for Akinbiyi he will be hoping the striker can return to his old Wolves and Bristol City form and rediscover the scoring touch.

Sounds too good to be true, so probably is.
Kember was saying the other day how we should never have sold Steve Kabba. I'm sure that had we not wasted all that money on Akinbiyi, then Kabba would probably still be banging the goals in for us now. Not a bad player to have on the bench, I reckon. Anyway, I'm just disappointed that I never got to use my 'Gabba Gabba Hey!' chant, although if you're not a fan of the Ramones, you won't know what I'm talking about (...and you should be ashamed of yourself, by the way). Ramble over. |

And even better news, Merson will hardly score now if Akinbadbuy is in the way! Doug, get fit soon and the top scorer spot will be yours for the taking!

Walsall can't be too afraid of some high wage earners - is their chairman trying to bank-roll them to the Prem like Pompey did?
De Goey - Merson - (Akinbiyi)... what a backbone to a team!

Merson is Walsall's highest paid player and is getting £3,000 a week - he was on £10,000 a week at Pompey (which strangely enough is what Akinbiyi 'earns' at Palace). The move to Walsall only went through because Pompey gave Merson a parting gift of £250,000.

Quote:
You could not be more wrong. They have a very tight budget and are trying to do a deal with Palace for Ade reference his wages. Colin Lee's wages budget has been cut drastically this season, by £2m. This is the first time in Walsall's history that they have survived in the 1st div 3 years on the trot, and to make it a fourth would be a good season for them. The reason why he (and Stoke) want Ade is because Colin Lee was the man who got the best out of him at Wolves, and Tony Pullis (Stoke) was the man who got the best out of him at Bristol City. If Steve Kember wants to know how he can PM me.

De Goey plays for Stoke, not Walsall!

Yes sorry, I spent so long trying to spell "de Goey" I forgot where he was!
I really hope Akinbiyi goes, but for positive reasons, if he'd done well for us I would have been 100% behind him, but he never had a chance being bought for so much (after appearances, etc) and hardly looking useful at Leicester: a) Let's end this debacle - the BBS will have to go back to discussing favourite sandwich fillings b) Get Ade playing competitive football where he belongs c) Have a free squad number and pay cheque to fill our current gap(s) Bit worried we may have a Merson-esque pay-off to deal with though (*see Firesign's comment above)

In an idle moment (and desperate for any glimmer of hope that AA is on his way) I wandered onto the Walsall website where a very recent post says that AA's agent has just been on Sky saying that he is very close to joining Walsall
