FYI, some quick tips;
- Cog behavoural therapy to treat the negative thinkin and perceptions coupled with some form of analytical psy to treat th root cause.
- Do not take benzodiazepines i.e. valium and the lik.
- Only take anti depressants (.e.g Specifc serontonin reuptake inhibitors or Tricyclics) if hendheld thru the process - if they don't work try another bt beware of the pills - look at To view the link you have to Register or Login for info on mothers little helpers.
- Sport, lots and lots of sport - get the natural high hormones pumping
- DO NOT DRINK - alcohol is one of th worst depressants and hangover day is usually a really good time for a bout fo the blues to kick in
- Talk to people, let them know tyou're ill
- Do NOT DO ANYTHING STUPID - there is always a way thru this.
- Use he net to fid help group, chatgroups etc and talkto people who have recovered. Bewar on the net though of people who sit 9round in chat rooms wallowing in self pity - god, sounds like th bbs on a sunday mornin after the footy
- Keep your family and friends close and let them know nwhjat you're goin thru - a friend in need is a friend indeed.
- Be positive and try to stop thinking about being down - being down gets you down and worrying about it mnakesit woprse.
ALL THE BEST

Like Monty has said, depression usually seems to be a chemical imbalance in the brain, which can be controlled by medication. I have a close friend who has suffered from depression in the past, but found he was fine when he was taking the prescribed drugs. I think generally depression is more recognised these days as being a medical condition. This could be due to the media focusing on high-profile sufferers such as Robbie Williams and Adam Ant, and more recently boxer Frank Bruno. It is naive to ask: "what have you got to be depressed about?" because the answer if often that there is no logical reason for it, the depression is just there.

I would just like to add Paul that you are one of the most popular members on the BBS, and your posts have often brought a smile to my face. Let's hope you can fight this, and come out the other end smiling.

One of the hardest things to talk about and also very hard to find someone who understands what is happening to "you".
Please try to find that person who connects with you, they are out there (even in Oz ) my wife, sister-in-law and nephew suffer from a chemical in balance. My wife needs my love and understanding, too many times loved ones do not try to understand and put it down to many different things.
How can any of us really understand what is happening to you, help can only come from your talking about it. All I can say is please find someone, start with your family and your GP, the longer you try to deal with it yourself the worse it will get for you. I am sorry to say this "but you cannot deal with it yourself".

Brave post, sydney eagle. A lot of people sneer at bulletin boards etc., but I reckon you could do a lot worse than coming on here regularly while you're dealing with this. Just reading through this thread so far shows how supportive people are, and there's always plenty of other stuff to distract and amuse. In any event, good luck.

With no intention of offending dannyturner or anyone else, this made me laugh out loud:

Good luck to you Sydney, I am pleased that you have the BBS and are not suffering alone. The thing is that when one has depression its like the driver of a car in a skid or the pilot of a plane in a dive, it is only yourself who can make the actions to pull out of it. However, it is easy for me to post and less easy for you to pull off. However, I am damn full sure that you will. After all you have the support of all the people who have posted all the great messages above and already you bravely admit the problem, remember as so many others have posted, please don't try to beat it alone but use your friends on the BBS and elsewhere to help you come through this.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck Paul. I'm sure life will turn good for you, like it has for henryhallandhisbasque. Life is the wierdest thing!

Has anybody ever tried Omega-3 fish oils, 5-HTP, phenylalanine or St.Johns Wort with any success?

I get quite stressed and anxious at times and I've found sport really helps. Watching Palace usually doesn't though.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments.

I went out for a few hours last night with men at work to watch the rugby league grand final and it was quite a good time,it was also the first time I've decided to go out in ages. I do still feel extremely uncomfortable in public places/situations and to be honest I don't like it but I guess it's unhealthy to always sit at home alone and do nothing.

Paul, I have PM'd you but you are right, it is unhealthy to sit alone and dwell too much. Always remember though that you are not alone. Just on here you have many friends who will try and help and encourage you and, as several have said, you need to find someone who you can talk openly with without being judged or patronised. That really is important. A good counsellor who specialises in that cognative thing (cant remember the exact term) will do wonders for you and before long you will be able to put all the crap in your life behind you (apart from Palace of course)

No problem. If everyone drew on their life experiences to help others the world would surely be a better place. Right, I am getting far too deep, must be the wine, time for bed here in Texas.

In 1986 I developed severe stress that was triggered by an upcoming redundancy. The headaches and anxiety I suffered at the weekends thinking about the following Monday got too much to bear (Saturday afternoons didn't help either!), and I was eventually signed off for 12 weeks. During this time I had counselling and it definitely helped me to get going again although it was a very frightening time.

Once I had been made redundant, I signed up to take a course in Stress Counselling which I eventually passed. During this time, I was unemployed for around 10 months and lost 3 jobs at the interview stage as I now had a record of stress which employers were not prepared to take a chance on.

I didn't take up the stress counselling full-time as I could not afford the slow income growth and as I also eventually found employment as a contractor in the IT industry, paying excellent money. Then, as the contracts petered out, I decided to take a fulltime IT position for pretty standard money to get over the constant "will they won't they" renewal periods, IR35, and the administration of running your own company.

So I joined Direct Line and about to be made redundant. I am really starting to suffer from stress again. I can't afford to take time off as I can't allow it to be put on my medical records. My training taught me that , in this situation, I can either move on now and forget about it, or break the barriers down into manageable pieces to allow me to adapt and move forward. However, as some of you have probably experienced in the past, big companies take great delight in keeping you on edge and will only give you the information you require as, and when, they are ready. All we have had is lies and deception throughout this period, including a VR register, even though we are all going. I suspect that there are a lot of people at Churchill's going through the same.

I know that I would be in serious trouble if I didn't do the training, but am still struggling to keep above it. In fact, I may be looking to provide stress awareness training next year if I can't find anything else.

Anyway, the point is that I am totally aware of what is going on with SE and others, and wish them luck. However, be warned of the consequences of getting a medical record for stress or depression and try to get your GP to record it as something vague.

Also, make sure you stand up for your rights and get the information you need to make your decisions about situations. You don't need to physically threaten someone, but let them know in no uncertain terms how their unreasonable behaviour is affecting you and ask them how they intend to deal with this.

No, but ravers use it for replenishing serotonine (sp). It's apparently very good.

Sorry to hear about this, Paul. My brother went through a really rough time with depression a few years ago, where he started hurting himself and eventually tried to end it all. He actually checked himself into casualty and he says that it was only as he was sitting in the waiting room with bandages round his wrists that it dawned on him that he still had so much to do in life. He still has bad days, but he says he just looks at his scars and shudders with the realisation that he nearly didn't have the many good days as well.

I know it also helped him through to know that depression is a chemical imbalance of the brain and not his "fault". The anti-depressants try to correct the chemical imbalance.

Good luck with your demons, Paul.
