Kingston to Selhurst by car
Just wondered if anyone regularly made the above route and had any tips for me! Have to do this trip everytime there's a home game on a Tuesday between now & next April more than likely.
Leaving Kingston between 5 & 6pm so not ideal. Previously, I think I went through Raynes Park, towards Wimbledon, then towards Mitcham etc. Took about 1 1/2 hours if I recall. Any suggestions or tips gratefully received! |

Its a nightmare trip Janet, best I can suggest is cut out Mitcham altogether.
Head for home by your usual route and when there head for the ground avoiding the Purley Way, use Croydon Flyover instead, then cut across through Addiscombe towards Selhurst. You aren't going to save a lot of time at that time of night though.

ahh yeah i do it all the time. it takes a maximum of 45mins
but the way you have described seems like the way i go. basically you need to go through raynes park. this then takes you to morden and through mitcham.

Mitcham Common is a bloody 'mare now since they made it one lane up towards Croydon. From the A3 (my final approach from Wiltshire), I go over the West Barnes Lane level-crossing to make my way onto Grand Drive. I then go Tudor Drive and Sutton Common Road (because that's where I used to live) before worming my way through the St.Helier estate to the Goat, past Mitcham Junction station, along the Common, past the burnt out caravan at the Jollies
and through the trading estate to avoid the Lombard roundabout. Thenceforth to Fornuneaf.See you on the Grand Drive car-park later ![]() |

Depends where in Kingston you are. I always cut across through Tolworth and head towards Ewell and Epsom, then past Banstead and over towards Croydon crossing Purley Way. Normally takes between 1/2 hour-3/4 hour depending on traffic.

By the way that is usually leaving at about 1:30 on matchdays and 6:30 on mid-week games.

I would do the same journey or if the A3 is looking clear head up that way and skim past Wimbledon.

Yes, Tolworth, you could even go via Hampton Court bridge... A308 --> A3 --> Ewell, I would even go round Croydon a bit more by cutting up past the Cuddington golf course to Banstead, mind you that time of night it can be a bit sticky...
It's almost tempting to shoot up the A316 onto the M3 --> M25 and fly right round to J6 Godstone then up over the top of Warlingham and Sanderstead etc. - It'll cost you more petrol but is probably quicker as it is 4 lanes all the way round.

Depends how well you know Sutton, Wallington etc.
you could go down the Ewell by pass and turn left to Sutton. Then take the road that goes through belmont high st, and before you come to Sutton , go right so you end up at Wallington and straight onto Fiveways Junction, and onto Croydon. From Tolworth Tower it can be done in about 40 mins. |

Nah, there's a right bottleneck between Jcts 8 - 6 where it goes down to 2 lanes at that time of night.

If I was coming from Kingston, i wouldn't travel by car. Jamaica is bl00dy miles away and in places the roads are none existent.

I drive to work in S Croydon from Raynes Park every day, and do the RP to Selhurst drive most home games including evenings.
No more than 1/2 hour from Raynes Park, as long as you're just after rush hour: Martin Way to Morden, Morden Road to Mitcham Junction then DON'T turn right down the Cricket Green and onto Croydon Road (due to permanently buggered lights at junction with Beddington Lane), rather go STRAIGHT THROUGH the centre of Mitcham onto Commonside East and onwards to Northborough Road, across London Road Norbury to Beulah and SP. The M25 and central Croydon ideas are no-nos IMO, the Sutton route is a viable alternative but I find takes 10 or so minutes more. |
