Have you tried the official club statistician Alan? He regularly receives a Statistician's Bulletin which updates professional players' obituaries. Will give him a call to see what information he has of our posthumous heroes and let you know on here. PS. John will contact you direct by 'phone with any information he can find. The Rothman's/Sky Sports Yearbooks have Obituaries pages near the back each year.
Two I spotted: Stuart Imlach died October 2001 (no day given). Ronnie Allen 9 June 2001. Couldn't find Cliff Holton but I thought he was fairly recent. |

Rothman's/Sky Sports and other Yearbooks are all useful sources for obituaries but they are by no means exhaustive and the official bulletins of the Association of Football Statisticians are likely to provide far greater and more accurate information since much of it is provided by Members assoc- iated with the Clubs. |

No I'm sure they aren't Freddy and I didn't mean to imply they were.

Moderator - please kill this thread. To be reminded of the deaths of men such as Imlach, Byrne and Allen, players who to me will always be young, fit, powerful athletes makes me feel - er - vulnerable. Please - kill the thread and allow me to continue believing that I'm still in my 20s.

If I killed it then someone would start a "Deceased Palace Threads" thread and then where would you be. Just out of interest, don't you have any mirrors at home Mal?

The great Johnny Byrne died in May 2000 I think. A few months before he died I met him in the Clifton Arms before a Palace home match (he was really good friends with Dave Harper the ex landlord) and we had a good chat. He'd been coaching in South Africa and seemed very keen to get back after his visit to the UK to continue his work. One thing that really impressed me was his excellent memory of all things Palace and West Ham, past players, scores etc. Another ex Palace player who regularly paid a visit to the Clifton was Peter Burridge, he is very much still alive though.

Nope. I must confess that I am a rather vain person and so I threw them all out a couple of months ago when I realised that my Christmas binging and my reducingmy daily run from 10 miles to eight miles had resulted in my waist measurement creeping up to 28 inches. That is 28 inches at the front and 28 inches at the back. Oh - and another couple of inches on each side. |

I've never understood why people keep trotting out the name Borge Thorup when we're talking about our all-time disaster players. He only ever played one match for us (home to Chelsea), and even in that one he simply came on as a sub. Incidentally, I can confirm he's still very much alive, and currently helping to run the Greenock ferry. |

Cheers Freddy. I do know John, so I'll run that by him on Monday when I see him. Soccer History mag is a good source as well, but apart from their publications, I haven't yet looked at the AFS stuff they do each month. |

This illustrates the idiocy of my post - as does the fact that I nominated Deano and Austin - a player who in my opinion was an asset overall. Anyway - I'm in danger of taking this worthy thread down a blind alley. |

Certainly wasn't having a pop at you, Mal. I realised you were referring to the habits of others. I just feel it's curious when others (not you!) include Mr Thorup in a "worst ever X1". Still, like you I'll leave the subject. Don't want to kill off a thread about dead people. |
