Popovic to Leave??

Well, things seem to be getting worse. According to the Daily Mirror....

''Premiership New boys Crystal Palace are in danger of losing defensive lynchpin Tony Popovic to Cardiff for nothing.
Palace had agreed a new deal with Popovic, who is out of contract this summer, but now want to renegotiate terms with the Australian. cardiff are ready to offer Popovic a better deal.''

What the F*ck is going on? Things seems to be getting worse by the day. We have yet to get one new contract signed, and their has been no real indication of new signings. How the hell Cardiff can offer him a better deal than us is beyond me. Gray has virtually gone, and Popovic next. We need some positive news coming from the club as I am already dreading the prospect of playing in the Premiership without Julian and Popovic, who are possibly two of only six/seven players we have that are capable of playing in the Premiership. The news regarding Simon Jordans future could be down to this, so things need sorting out quick!

The Mirror seem to have it in for Palace at the moment. Does anybody know if their sports editor is a lifelong Hammer?

And, for what it's worth, I don't believe for one second that Cardiff would either

a: be able to outbid Palace
b: tempt a player away from what would probably his last chance to play in the top league

The Mirror is certainly printing some 'interesting' stuff...
First we had dear ol' Simon J's piece (a nice bit of PR for the man - Saint Simon as they nearly called him) and now this...

pinches of salt required me thinks.

I agree. This runs contrary to all of Popovic's public statements recently. Mind you I expect the uncertainty of Jordan's position can't exactly be helping the sign-up process.

The daily mirror (notice the lack of caps.lock) is an anti-Palace rag. they make me f*cking sick....take no notice of what they print about us every single thing they say about us is negative, somebody in that paper has it in for us they are aa bunch of mother f*cking west ham supporting sh*t heads and have been for years. Up their collective arseholes. (I feel much better now, Thank you.)

If, as they claim, a deal had been agreed previously then it is more likely Popovic that wants to renegotiate following promotion. They surely can't be saying that Palace are trying to renegotiate a deal that they've only just agreed in the last week - unless of course there are other signings suddenly in the pipeline, which would make Popovic a less important member of the squad.

On the whole though my guess is that the story is rubbish - it looks very similar to the one which appeared in the lead up to the play off final.

Why? Anybody who signs or not conditional on the chairman might as well go now. Last season Milan Madaric made almost exactly the same statement as SJ has done, didn't stop their "sign-up process".

Why in monkey's buggery would Popovic give up the chance of playing in the Premiership to go and piss about at Cardiff scrapping for a mid table position in the Coca Cola Championship.

At least if it was a club such as West Ham it would be at least believable.

Popovic was interviewed after the final and said that it wouldn't have mattered if we hadn't got promoted as he would have almost definately signed for us anyway. Now that we were promoted he was extremely excited about testing himself against the best.

There is no way he would leave for Cardiff simply for a better financial package even if Cardiff could offer that

Dont believe it - there's nothing more than the Daily Sh*tsquirt would like to see than the Palace camp in disarray at the end of next season, and this sounds like another sad ploy to unsettle the team/club/supporters....

I do hope there is no truth behind it, but regardless of truth or not the mirror is still a sh*tstirring rag...

Remember, Sunday 30th May, the Sunday Mirror were the only paper to concentrate not on Shipps/Palace going up, but on Mikele's tackle of Carrick, headline "the £30 Million Blunder".

They have power without responsibility, integrity or regulation. Don't believe a word of it.

On the old BBC interactive thingy on TV, Popovic is quoted as saying he wanted to renew his contract with Palace a couple of months ago as he is really enjoying playing for Palace at the moment but Jordan wanted to wait to the end of the season.

He will run out in Red 'n' Blue come August.

Explain why Mr. Jordan would be keen to unsettle his most important defender...?

Seriously, a) after their Sunday back page it is fairly clear the post-Morgan Mirror is going to be verry anti-palace (isn't that •••• of a sports editor up for the top job?)

b) this story is such an obvious fabrication that I'm startled anyone has taken it at all seriously.

Hasn't he all but signed a new contract? He was even quoted last week saying that he's always wanted to a new contract but SJ wouldn#t let anyone sign until our fate was clear.

Why should reneotitaion be a bad thing? Anybody thought that Palace might want to offer a BETTER deal to Popovic?

For lazy journo "renegotiation" + old interest from cardiff = a quick few column inches (and who cares if it's accurate)
