Story by Justin Johnson 10 June 2004
The Football League has confirmed that all three tiers of football under their control are set to be renamed next season. As we reported previously, starting from the 2004/5 season, Football League Division One is set to be renamed The Coca-Cola Football League Championship, whilst Division Two and Three will be renamed Coca-Cola Football League One and Coca-Cola Football League Two respectively. Soeaking of the news, Football League Chairman Sir Brian Mawhinney told the Official Football League Site: ’The Championship' is a term steeped in the history of The Football League. Reclaiming it for our leading clubs will place a new enhanced emphasis on its status at the pinnacle of our competition. “Not only is it a gateway to the Premiership, it is one of Europe's leading league competitions, in terms of the standard of football being played, the high quality of stadia and the numbers of supporters attending” Mawhinney also revealed that there are more changes than simply the league title ahead: “We will be making a series of equally significant announcements over the coming months as we unveil a number of new initiatives aimed at co-ordinating and developing the outstanding work already being carried out by clubs. "We want our games to become ever more attractive, not only to our core audience of football fans, but also to a new generation of youngsters on the brink of discovering the game. We also want a commercial audience to be encouraged to re-evaluate its perception of the League.” |

In my opinion this is a good move for all and is paving the way for the creation of a premiership two, which will narrow the gap between rich and poor.
The fact was that the football league in it's previous state was a bit of a joke. Hopefully this new step will alter people's perceptions of the clubs outside the premiership. |

Good point actually, I didn't think of it that way. It is vital for larger businesses and advertisers to take an interest in the lower leagues and inject some much needed money.

Haha Crewe in the championship - hmmmm Rotherham in the championship - uhu GILLINGHAM IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP - LOL! It is pretty daft that the division three that was once division four is now division two! Still, it could've been worse couldn't it? - I thought Coca Cola might name it something like 'The Coca Cola Initial Play-Off Zone A' URK

Agreed it is daft but it had to be changed - otherwise it would have been the Coca Cola Thirst Division
