USB 2.0 1.1 1.0 aaaaaaah!

I'm not the most intelectual when it comes to computers and I'm looking for a bit of help...recently I was bought an external cdrewriter by a friend as a present but it states I need a USB 2.0 port to use it. I'm pretty sure the standard ports on my computer are 1.1 or 1.0 or whatever but they are jsut not fast enough. If I bought a USB 2.0 hub would that solve my problems, connecting the 1.1 or 1.0 etc port to the hub then to the rewriter. Or am I going to have to open the computer up and put a whole new port in....advice please!!!

(I'm getting confused just writing this!) Any advice is much appreciated

Buy a new motherboard. Not too pricey and will generally do your PC a world of good. Get someone to check what you are buying is compatible with your current components (generally speaking they ARE backwards compatible), and get someone to install it for you. A decent new motherboard (read around some reviews) shouldn't set you back more than £60-£80 if you find a decent budget one. Worth it for the future, too.

USB2 is backwards compatible with USB1.1 in all but a very few cases, the only real problem being that USB1.1 can only transfer data at around 1Meg a second, so your 650Meg cd's might take a good 15 mins to burn.

You should just be able to plug in your cd writer and it will work.

It is. You can run USB2 devices on USB1 ports BUT you won't get the increase of speed that USB2 provides, you'll need a USB2 port.

It's only about £10 for a USB2 card though...

No, you'll just get buffer over-run errors and the disk won't complete.

New port is the way to go here.
