Italian League Structure help?
I know there is Serie A and then Serie B, but after that I am a little confused so help me please.
There is Serie C1 A and B, and there's Serie C2 A, B, and C. Now I thought C2 was lower than C1, but this cannot be the case as Fiorentina were in Serie C2B last season, and now they're back in Serie A. So they can't have jumped Serie C1? ![]()

I just want to know how Fiorentina have jumped from Serie C2B to Serie B to Serie A? I thought they would have gone into C1 A or B. It doesn't make sense (to me) to have Serie C1 A, and B, and then C2 A, B and C. Why not Serie C A, B, C, D, and E?
Or Serie C 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5?

Current League Structure
Serie A Serie A is the name of the highest football league in Italy. Serie A, as it is structured today, began in 1929-30. From 1898 to 1929 the competition was organised into regional groups. No title was awarded in 1927 after Torino were stripped of the championship by the Italian Federation (FIGC). Torino was declared champions in the 1948-49 season following a plane crash near the end of the season in which the entire team was killed. ..... Click the link for more information. - 18 teams (20 teams for 2004/05) Serie B Serie B is the name of the second highest football league in Italy. Serie B, composed until the 2002-2003 season of 20 teams, has been enlarged for the 2003-2004 season to 24 teams, due to legal problems relating to Calcio Catania relegation (caso Catania). The league will revert to 22 teams for the 2004-2005 season, while Serie A will expand from 18 to 20 teams. The championship is often called the cadetti. ..... 2002/03 - Fiorentina are in Serie C2B
2003/04 - Fiorentina are in Serie B 2004/05 - Fiorentina are in Serie A. Something just doesn't add up.

What happened is that Siena fielded an ineligible player against one of the Serie B relegated teams during the 2002/2003 Season, who appealed against the result. I can't for the life of me remember who it was, but after lots of legal to-ing and fro-ing, they won their appeal and were re-instated in Serie B, and Napoli relegatd Napoli then went made and there was more legal arguements, until it was eventually decided that nobody would be relegated from Serie B for the 2002/3 season (thus saving Genoa and Atalanta), but this left the Division with 23 teams for Season 2003/4. The FIGC arbitirally decided that Fiorentina should be lifted into Serie B, have just won Serie C2B, and missing out C1 altogether. That has lead to the curious situation where, in order to even up the top two divisions, five teams were automatically promoted this season from B to A, with Fiorentina winning a play-off with Perugia from A to make it 6. Ironically, Atalanta have also been promoted. I have a feeling that the team orginally involved may have been Catania, but will check and come back to you. By the way, surely your signature should say "Divine"?

Oh, and technically "Fiorentina" didn't win Serie C2b, as they have only been allowed to use that name for the last year. The team was then known as AC Florentia Viola, or some such, and played their last game in front of 40,000; in a division which normally counts crowds in the hundreds.

Cheers CHE. Much appreciated. Although I'm not sure how I'd feel if I was a Serie C1 team, with them letting Florentia/Fiorentina whatever jump above them.

This was the actual story as it happened, it was actually Catania involved, Genoa and Salernitana, not Atalanta, were the other two teams "saved":
However, on 12 April Catania had played out a 1-1 draw with eventual champions Siena, who included a player who should have been suspended. He claimed that he had served his suspension the week before, but it turns out he had played for the "Primavera", which apparently is not allowed. Catania's first appeal against the result was rejected but a second one was upheld and the match awarded to them, 2-0.

Fiorentina/Florentia Viola won serie C2B in their first year there, howevever after Contreversy in serie B when it was expanded too 24 teams, The italian football federation allowed Fiorentina too jump Serie C1 and go straight too Serie B, they then were promoted from Serie B this year thus they are in Serie A next year

Well when i saw Florentia Viola (Fiorentina) play in C2b last year a few times, the away team would bring a dozen or so fans for some games, whilst the home support numbered around 30,000. Still an amazing atmosphere for what is basically Conference football.
And fair play to Angelo Di Livio who stuck with them and is now back in Serie A.
