LANs, WANs, IP adresses and Routers
following on from my thread about CM online, i decided to run a few tests on my internet connection.
when i have played CM online previously, i have always joined games, never hosted them. in anticipation of a BBS CM online league i decided to do a few hosting tests with no luck. i am currently running windows XP with a netgear DG814 router. i can set up an online game of CM but no one can join. when i go to the game status screen to get the IP adress fro others to use to connect, it gives me my LAN IP address. for people to connect i need the game to display my WAN IP Address. its not as simple as selecting WAN/LAN game in CMs settings as the only option is to run as server. so i need to know how to configure my router in order for people to connect to me. i have managed to forward the ports required for online CM play but i did not think this would be the issue as i have played CM online with no problems at all. any ideas

It's most likely a problem with your firewall, you could try turning off the in-built firewall in XP. Or, you might need to change one of your settings on your router to let people scan your ports.
But, i'm not too sure???? |

If you go to your router it should be displayed there. If you cannot find it try and run a traceroute from your dos prompt to Yahoo.com and it will display all your IP addresses.
dosommand is: tracert yahoo.com |

You Might need to forward ports to youre pc where youre playing CM, I had to forward ports 2 my PS2 2 be able 2 play on line , to connect to another PS2.
Hope this helps |

Your WAN (external) IP address will be the one that the router has - your PC's IP address will be an internal one from that (probably in the 192.168.x.x range). If you ask your mates to connect to the WAN address, they'll be trying to connect to your router and not your PC, so that won't work. If you give your mates your internal address, then that is not a valid address on the internet so they can't connect to that either. Your router will need to do port forwarding to work. You will need to forward these ports: 9093 UDP, 9094 TCP to your internal IP address. You can find out your WAN address from http://www.whatismyip.com/ and your LAN (internal) IP address by going to the command prompt and typing ipconfig Sorry, if some of this has been too basic, but I can't be sure of your computer knowledge, and it might help someone else in the future. |

It will only show as the "Default Gateway" for most people and not as a network card as it won't be physically attached to the PC. |

port forwarding is the only thing that will work, just go into your routers program (to edit its stats, figures, values, settings, options etc) and then use ur routers manual to port forward, it only takes a few seconds as soon as you know how to, each router is different im afraid, so no definate advice can be given without ur router product number + an online version of the manual for people to look at it and advise.
p.s. ur firewall is nothing to do with it at this stage, if after port forwarding its still bust, turn it off and test, then just allow CM access rights through ur firewall hope that helps a bit

o p.s., you only need to give ur mates the external ip, from www.whatismyip.com, you dont need the internal ip, as your router will route it all to your pc, so dont bother with all this fancy config stuff, as your internal ip wil almost definately be 192.168.0.2 or 192.168.1.1
