Virus software
Hi all,

Sure this has been done before.

I want to protect my laptop as much as possible when I go to Chile, mainly because I am fearful of this trojan horse that supposedly empties out bank accounts. Thus I will avoid doing bank business from internet cafes (how great is the danger anyway?).

I will not look at any more porn sittes, shhouldn't need to.. .

But in addition to that, what is the best current virus protection software out there on a price to performance basis. Name of product and price would be mostest useful.

I use AVG, which seems pretty good. Seems to pick stuff up all the time, and it's free. I'll post you a link when I get home.

Norton, McAfee and Trend Micro are the market leaders for paid AVS. They all cost about the same - £40 a year or so. I use Trend Micro PC-Cillian but its a personal choice.

Grisoft's is the best free one.

If you use the laptop for professional reasons its probably best to go for a professional service.. if you hit problems you can demand help.

I hated the AVG, too fiddly. Preferred to pay for Norton.
Also Google for Spy Bot, Ad Aware and HiJack This, which are all free and clean up dodgy cookies and trojans etc.

Merijn.org I think is the inventor of Hijack This, which analyses what processes are running on your pooter at any time

Cheers Timbo. I have spybot and hijack. I am after something that snares and isolates any bad incoming and allows me to deal with it.

This Norton stuff is £40 a year then. As I say I am looking to pevent any bank account hacking. Not sure if this is a widespread problem or whether the press are blowing it out of proportion.

With my bank account I have to type in a membership number (12 digit), passcode (5 digit) and my name on one page then on the next page they give you a drop down menu to select two letters from a memorable word.

So Ive heard of typed username/password being stolen but that's why they introduced the drop down menu as well. Ive not heard of that being compromised

The big story I usually read in the press on this issue is actually an email scam whereby you get an email that LOOKS genuine, from the bank asking you to "verify" your username etc. Or there is a link in the email that takes you to a fake site that LOOKS identical to your bank's website which captures your data as you enter it in.

So always type in the URL.. never click on links, especially from emails.

It does seem out of proportion in the media but you cant be too careful.

The AVG doesn'y work on mine. A message comes up saying it is not compatible with msdos microsoft windows systems, which seems just a load of bollox.
