Racist FA?

I don't think so:

Quote:
Rio Ferdinand and Paul Ince blast the FA for not including any black players in their DVD 'Pride of the Nation', which features the best 17 players to have represented England in the last 40 years. (Various)

Why should they HAVE to include a black player?!?!?! If the best 17 were white in there opinion, then those are who should be represented. It should have nothing to do with colour.

These comments make me laugh. The inclusion of a player due to his colour is racist in the first place and yet they think they are arguing against it...

The FA are now going to pulp the whole lot (50,000 copies if I remember correctly) and 'correct the problem'.

It's true though, if the FA are truely not racist (and I'm pretty confident that they are not racist) then they should have no embarrassment about who they selected as the top 17.

Now, we'll have to pity the poor one or two black players who get put forward to the next release, as everyone will know that the FA didn't really think they were good enough to get there on merrit.

The video should just contain the whole of the 1966 World Cup Squad, and no one else.

I saw this on the FA website...

QUOTE:
The FA today made the following statement regarding the DVD recently produced as part of the englandfans membership pack.

The FA is firmly committed to promoting diversity in all areas of the game and in society. We regret and apologise for any offence that may have been caused due to the lack of black player representation on the DVD.

With immediate effect, the DVD which has been distributed to all new members of the englandfans club to date has been withdrawn.

The FA is in the process of producing a new DVD which will include several outstanding black players who have of course made a huge contribution to the national team and football in this country.

Additionally, The FA is writing a letter of apology to all englandfans who received the original compilation - with a copy of the new DVD. A letter will be sent to the PFA apologising for any offence caused to any current or former players.
UNQUOTE:

Also - who are the poor whiteys who will be left out of the "diversified" DVD?

Surely by Ince and Rio insisting black players be in it - surely this is racism?

Well Paul Ince wouldn't get on it for a start.

I am struggling to think of a black player that would get in the top 17; John Barnes was too inconsistent, Rio Fredinand and/or Sol Campbell? It's difficult to believe there are not two better centre halves than them.

Up front? Again its hard to pick a black player as one of the top three or four compared to Lineker, Greaves, Owen, Hurst (and that's just the modern era).

Its ridiculous, I was looking at the available black players in the paper and although there are some players who had succesful international carrers, Barnes, Campbell and Ince spring to mind but I dont think they have been good enough for the best 17.

There are also some younger players, Defoe and Ashley Cole who im sure could be within the greatest 17 after they have proved themselves over a sustained period of time.

Yet again something out of nothing!

Does anyone have a list of the 17 greatest players. Given that it covers a period of 40 years, including our one and only World Cup triumph, I would expect any black representation to be minimal. Now the FA are talking about several.

I might go along with Barnes and Ince but other than that I can't think of any others that deserve the great tag.

I would say John Barnes has real cause to be miffed, but then I guess he's used to being treated badly by England.

Some (not me) might make a case for Sol Campbell as he's often talked of in terms of being one of the world's best defenders.

I can't think of any others who'd make a top 17, possibly Des Walker? My off the top-of-head list would be:

Bobby Moore
Bobby Charlton
Alan Ball
Gordon Banks
Kevin Keegan
Kenny Sansom
Trevor Francis
Trevor Brooking
Bryan Robson
Gary Lineker
Glenn Hoddle
John Barnes
Peter Beardsley
Gazza
Paul Scholes
David Beckham
Michael Owen

Probably missed some obvious ones, but there you have it.

According to the BBC the list includes:-

Bobby Moore
Gary Linekar
Bobby Charlton
Paul Gascoigne
Alan Shearer
Bryan Robson
David Beckham
Terry Butcher
Martin Peters
Chris Waddle
Stuart Pearce
Steven Gerrard

Also supposed to be the best post-war players, so it is clearly unrepresentative. What about those men who always appeared in black and white on my TV screen.

Chris Waddle!!!

Wayne Rooney?

I can understand the annoyance now. He's hardly even started playing professional football, and already he's one of the top 20?!

I think that the question is not whether or not a John Barnes, Viv Anderson or Rio Ferdinand should make it into a list of England's best 17 players. The intelligent thing would have been to do a larger list of players.

I hardly think it's worth recalling the product, but the FA have against proved themselves naive (rather than racist) in producing something which was bound to be used against them.
