Pie 'n Mash

Well? Does it still exist. When I was a nipper my old man would take me to the Pie and Mash shop at Tooting. It was like the nectar of the gods. I haven't tasted it for a good 25 years now. Calling all Londoners! Do Pie and Mash shops still exist? .........and is the liquor still as good?

You are correct. Many a lunch hour whiled away in there back in the mid 90's.

There was one in Dartford when I worked there (1998), but I don't know if it's still there. It wasn't all that though!

The one in Croydon is ok, but nothing special. The ones in Bromley and Sutton are better.

can't believe you lot haven't mentioned Arments just off the Walworth Rd seeing as the rest are cowboys and Manzes were originally specialists in Ice Cream being Italian

I used to be a regular patron of the one in Waterloo ( Cookes) , on The Cut but its now a noodle bar . I know its progress but it still saddens me.

I believe that one in Peckham, at the bottom of the High Street, is still going ( and still has the old fashioned Marble tables and vinegar with chillis, all served in old Scotch bottles ) and last time I was in Deptford that one was still going. Can any East End Eagles confirm that the Pie shop on the Roman Road is still going ? My Aunt used to be in the Rag trade and many a Saturday would see me being dragged up there with the promise of Pie and Mash being used to pacify me whilst she bought rolls of material and stuff.

But I must confess that I ••••••• hate Eels. Yuck. Nothng more that big •••• eating worms in my not so humble opinion.

Was hoping to find some jellied eels when I was back a couple of weeks ago.

Never been a fan of pie 'n mash but there was a place at the wrong end of the Portobello road last time I was there a couple of years back that looked "propa". I mean the end where all the portugese places are.

There's one on Penge High Street. I tried sausage and mash there a few months ago and the mash was the same colour and texture as 70's school dinners (including the lumps). Not recommended.

Manzi's on Tower Bridge Road best of the lot. Better than the Deptford & Peckham branches. I should know I've tried 'em all.

Deffo avoid the one in the Blue and also Smiffy's in Downham - urgh.

Nice one in East Ham nr the Tube as I seem to remember

The Cut is sadly mourned too.

Ahhh now this is my kinda subject.

Arments, just off Walworth Road yummie I used to eat there at least once a week when I lived in Lorrimore Road Walworth.

Manzi's in Tower bridge Road brings back memories of my sadly missed Mum. I used to drive her to Guy's Hosp for her treatment once a fortnight and on the way home we would park the car opposite stick the disabled badge in the window and go and eat ourselves silly, God, for an woman so ill she could put some away!

When I was an inspector on the buses I used to sample manzes in Tower Bridge Road often. Bought some liquor from the Croydon on, absolute pants!

Used to frequent The Cut when I worked in town (circa 1985). The one in Croydon is just past the Surrey St markets- haven't tried it yet though maybe next time I'm over (MAY?????)

I have never had it myself but Monty had pie and mash as recently as last weekend down at her old stomping ground - Roman Road, Bow. They do vegetarian pie now apparently! I should imagine the shop where she gets it from is quite good cos isnt it a cockney thing originally? And Monty IS cockney Palace born and bred.

The GOA branch of Manzes is pretty good. Cockneys of Croydon is pretty iffy and of course Tower Bridge Road is the Dogs. Harringtons in Tooting used to be good is it still there?
