Thanks Jamie. Here goes-
What makes a player great? Looking at some players on the top 100 list it seems a lot of fans place flair and natural talent very highly, in my opinion a true great has to tick several more boxes. Mark Bright certainly does that. Courage, commitment, intelligence, heart and a deadly eye for goal. Mark was Stevie Coppell’s best buy (only Geoff Thomas runs him close). He was bought from Leicester for £75,000 in November 1986, a time when Palace were looking to re-build following the Mullery days. Coppell brought Mark in as a strike partner for Ian Wright. We all know what happened next. If Barber was Mr 110% what the hell was Bright?! Mark Bright was the most important man to the team in the period between late 1986 and the club’s promotion in 1989. He was the target man of a direct footballing team and was entrusted to take a prodigious young talent under his wing. He excelled on both fronts. Palace just missed out on the play-offs in Bright’s first full season with Palace as he banged in 25 goals despite two months out with a broken arm. In promotion season he notched a further 21 including one against Brighton. Following promotion Mark became our highest scorer back in the top flight with 12 in the league and of course he played a massive part in our Villa Park nirvana (without Wright). In Mark’s final season at Selhurst he broke the Palace record for league goals in the top division with 17 (and that was with a run of 18 games without a goal). People thought that he wouldn’t be able to achieve the same form without Wright but, his response was to score in the following eight consecutive matches after Ian’s departure (another Palace record). Brighty scored 113 times for Crystal Palace which puts him either third or fourth (depending on where you stand on how official Ted Smith’s career was) on the all-time rankings. Ian Wright scored four more goals for the club but Bright had marginally more league goals than his partner and certainly weighed in with more goal assists. He optimised Palace’s desire in that glorious period and deserves his place in our folklore. Blood and thunder is important to me. I’d put Dowie as greater than Curcic, Thorn greater than Evans, Queen greater than Freedman and Mark Bright greater than them all. |

He insisted on making it bigger, couldnt cut it out
Here is what Grim Reaper said about Bright on the Results thread Brighty was class. Let's remember something else - Bright ignited the team from literally his first match (90th min goal in 3-3 draw.) Not necessarily the case that Wright would have become the player he was without bright around. Bright also scored over 100 goals for Palace - only 3/4 have done that, so his place in the Palace Top Ten is justified. Brighty scored in the Play Off Final '89/ thegoal that set things rolling in the semi final in 1990 and a goal to send us to Wembley in 1991. Also scored in two separate wins over Brighton. The guy's contribution was immense. |

I voted Jim Cannon - for his dedication, loyalty and commitment to the cause. He was consistant too - and every now and then bundled or headed one in for us. Jim Cannon is an all time Palace hero.
Hilaire, Jackson, Burrridge, Sansom, Wright, Evans, Rodgers, Hughes, - all up there. We need catagories for this poll. In the 'Crazy and yet brilliantly entertaining' catagory - Rashid Harkouk! Something always happened when he was on the pitch! Last edited by celery stick : 08-02-2004 at 09:40 AM. |

Good piece. I think what set him apart from a lot of "target men" as they were called, then, was his skill with the ball at his feet, which was considerable as well. He also seemed a very serene and composed presence on the pitch in a team with its share of nutters.

With due respect Gee Tee, your choice flies in the face of objective reality. On the grounds of years at the Club, and games played Bright comes way down a list headed by Jim Cannon (with over 650 games to his credit, most as our skipper). He falls way behind Lombardo, Rogers, Wright, Byrne and other forwards in skill level, while failing to win a single International cap, unlike most of our greatest Palace players. That said, he was a player I greatly admired, especially when playing alongside Ian Wright, and he was certainly one of the best target- forwards I've seen in over 60 years following Palace, and the £80,000(approx.) he cost us from Leicester City was one of the finest deals Noades/Coppell ever did for CPFC! How odd you didn't include Jim Cannon in your "blood and thunder" category? If 650+ games in which he never gave less than 100%, isn't commitment, then I just don't know the meaning of the word...... Perhaps you never saw him play, in which case the omission is more understandable! Last edited by Freddy Kurz : 08-02-2004 at 11:33 AM. |

Freddy - I saw Jim Cannon play but only half a dozen or so times in his hey-day, when I was about six or seven years old.
I saw him another twenty or so times in his final season of 87-88 (by which time I was 15), my clearer memories of him are therefore obviously when he was a little past it. I didn't include him in my top ten but did comment that I felt terrible about leaving the likes of him and Thorn out. My top ten had some flair players but 'blood and thunder' is more my thing and Mark Bright is ahead of others in this category mainly because of the successful Palace era in which he played (although I do admit it also has something to do with how far back I can remember too).

I reckon only two (perhaps three) players on the list can really deserve the title - the others just make up the ten and give us the chance to reminisce about some wonderful footballers who we've been privileged to watch.
