i notice the number 2 shirt has not yet been filled... wonder if this is to encourage competition between boyce / butts, or if it will be filled by a new signing?

The number two shirt is considered unlucky - the last couple of players to have it kept getting injured. (Curtis Fleming, and then Danny B had it last year)

Interesting Neil Shipperley is kept at Number 11 and not been shunted down (or swapped with someone like Wayne Andrews).

However Sandor Torghelle has gone from Number 10 (now Macken) to Number 29. Perhaps an indication of where he'll be in the pecking order.

I don't know why Danny Butterfield has gone from Number 2, to take Darren Powell's now vacant Number 20.

Also just as we would have expected Kiraly has taken the Number 1 shirt from Speroni who is now Number 27 (used by Ventola last season).

WTF?

Squad numbers are for the nigel element, Lativan Eagle usually goes on about them.

I couldnt give a flying •••• what number they wear, as long as they do the business on the park.

Oh look AJ is now number 15, lets e-mail the club and complain.

The only thing I'll be having on the back of my Palace shirt if I get one is:

You forget to add that Joonas is down as 22 so if Butterfield had that would it mean no Joonas.

It is interesting as I read into last season's squad numbers that Dowie was the type of manager who didn't care for showing the importance of being in the top 11. For example, he had AJ, Dougie, Torhelle and Shipps in the top 11 who were never all gonna be in the starting 11, and put Aki, Hughes and first team regulars such as One size and Kolkka outside.

This season he has done a bit of both, leaving Poppa and Hudson with 5 and 6, but moving around Speroni and Torgelle to suggest they are not going to be first team regulars...

This is where most people get confused by the concept of being given a Free Transfer and Released on a free transfer.

He has been given a free transfer which means he still has a contract but can look for another club without having to worry about the clubs having to agree a fee.

Always find these weirdly interesting. First thing I notice (probably already mentioned) is that there's no #2 and no #13....you after a new right back and a new goalkeeper maybe? Would have thought Speroni would be number 13. And Shipperley still there.

You still have an extremely good squad there.

Latvian Eagle

I think number 2, 13, and 24 will go to new players.

One being a new keeper possibly. :) I agree I thought Speroni or Kiraly would have had 13, especially as Kiraly's favourite number is apparently 13!

As mentioned earlier, Danny apparently requested a number change as it's seen as a bit of a jinx - Jamie Smith, Curtis Fleming and Butts have all suffered medium- or long-term injuries while wearing it over the last four seasons.

(Remember, Butts was number 4 during his ever present season.)

Do you think I can I have the number two shirt then please? I don't mind if I get injured, as long as they keep paying me. I'm willing to go in goal for penalty shoot out competions in training, and I'll even take them for real if AJ goes. Mind you, Benzhiyi and Lightweight might have better claims...

(P.S. I'm 38 now, how old must I be before I finally give up hope of ever playing for Palace?)

Hmmm, I'm surprised to see Shipps still making the first XI and I would have thought Popovic and Hudson should have made way for Ward and Fitz at numbers 5&6 respectively.

Still, as others have said it really makes no odds whatsover really.

Derry getting the number 10 Shirt was a little strange though I thought.

If the Palace players are a superstitious lot, I guess that explains why we never see the 5+5 shirt these days.

yes we are.

I was in the club shop today having my shirt printed and they ask where you want to have the name, as the players shirts will have a sponsor on them - that will be available to fans as well later if you want to have more advertising on your clothes, and pay for it.

The squad numbers have been adjusted and all the players 26 onwards have been shifted up one digit. Is this another superstition or clearing a space for a new player?

Typical Palace - other teams (http://shop.qpr.co.uk/Product.pasp) are offering the advertising for free if you really do need it :bash:

Ward has number 4 though, which is the original centre half shirt number, prior to it becoming more commonly used by centre midfielders.

However, you are quite right that in this day and age of squad numbers, it makes no difference.

I think some players often choose high numbers that, when added together, make their favourite shirt number. I would say the 5+5 shirt was a prime example but that was just plain stupid!! However, it would explain why Butts went for 20.

Interesting that Torghelle has changed from 29 to 30! :confused:

Latvian Eagle

Squad number changes:
29 = Sam Togwell
30 = Sandor Torghelle
31 = Tyrone Berry
32 = Ryan Hall
37 = Glenn Wilson
38 = Aaron Fray.

I don't know if someone messed up but the programme vs Inter is well wrong! Also Fray has changed number! He had 37 vs Inter on his shirt. He now has 38! :eek: I dare say out of the club shops stock! :grrr:
