A new season is with us and yet again I'd like to bore you with news and comments on my home town club VfB Lübeck.

VfB Lübeck compete in the Regionalliga Nord (3. Bundesliga North, in fact). After missing out on promotion for the last 3 seasons (finishing just one place behind the promoted teams!) I'm full of hope that this time VfB will get it right.

BTW: VfB Lübeck haven't achieved anything in their history. Apart from two seasons in the 2. Bundesliga (1995-97) they have been restricted to regional or local football.

SC Fortuna Köln 0, VfB Lübeck 1.
A free header in 89. minutes secured this very vital win.

This is how the ground looks like:

This is my home town team. Ware FC.

This is the "main" stand, really its the only stand. They moved here in 1995 after Glaxo Wellcome (The main employer in the town) wanted the area the old stadium was built on, so they offered to build Ware FC a new ground, if they got the old area. Cost them £1.2m.

http://www.warefc.co.uk/files/photos/wadesmill1.jpg

Here is the old stadium: First played here in 1926, and the last game was against Hungerford Town.

http://www.warefc.co.uk/files/photos/bury2.jpg

The Club was founded in 1892 and although first called Ware Town soon changed it's name to plain Ware FC.

Currently Ware play in the Ryman League Division 3, so it's pretty low down. But they have just started their friendly games. A 1-0 win over Wisbech Town.

This thread is intended as my annual VfB Lübeck ego-trip:
Of the 14 VfB players used at SC Fortuna Köln (Cologne) 3 were from Turkey, 2 from Zimbabwe, 1 Czech and one player from Lithuania.

Not bad for a team playing semi-pro football at 3. level in the german league pyramid.

"Bayer Leverkusen A" is the amateur side - it is common for 1. and 2. Bundesliga sides to have amateur sides lounging around in the lower divisions. They even occasionally make it to German cup finals (correct me if I am wrong Ruedi).

You are absolutely right.
Newly promoted Bayer Leverkusen A (pipping Neil the Eagle's Wuppertaler SV on goal difference) are in fact fielding an U21 side. All players are on pro-contracts but have yet to make it into the 1. team.

Werder Bremen are using "amateur"-players - hopeful young players from lower league clubs who train with the full-pro squad.

A-teams can compete in the German Cup (but no longer be drawn against their own 1. team - happend too often in recent years). But A-teams are not eligible to win promotion to the fully professional 1. and 2. Bundesliga.

VfB Lübecks next match is at home to SC Paderborn 07 (Saturday, 2pm local time)

This is a match I've been waiting for nearly 25 years. Simply because of my own little bit of bigotry. My wife is from Paderborn and her parents still live down there in a small village on the outskirts of this Roman Catholic stronghold.

To describe people from this part of Eastern Westfalia as conservative or traditional is using an euphemism.

So, come on you boys in green and white - give them a right royal beating.

VfB Lübeck 3 (1)
SC Paderborn 2 (1)
att. 4.300

This match had everything: it started in bright sunshine but had to be stopped for 15. mins because of heavy rain, wind and lightning.

After a 15 mins break VfB were caught flat out (0-1) but got back on level terms having put Paderborn under pressure (for nearly 90% of the match). Chances galore after that but Paderborn struck yet again (71.) when the VfB defence fell asleep.

But what a comeback: Ibi Türkmen scored twice (75. / 78. min).
A Paderborn player was sent off in 85. mins and even their goalie came out in a late effort to score an equaliser ....

What a match:
Being down 3-0 after 40 mins VfB looked dead and buried. But what a comeback.

3-1 in 42. mins
3-2 in 48. mins
3-3 in 89. mins
3-4 in 90. mins
then a VfB player sent-off
3-5 in 92. mins (with their goalie on halfway-line)

I once nearly got off with a woman from Braunschweig. I sat opposite her on a train and after swapping the usual boring travellers tales, she offered me a bite of her banana and then invited me to stay at her place for the night. The signs were good, you might think. But her place turned out to be her parents' hotel and I didn't even get a discount. Therefore you can count on my support when Lubeck take on Braunschweig.

http://www.vfb-luebeck.de/grafik01/fahne.gif

This Saturday in the 1st. Rd proper of the German Cup VfB Lübeck (3. level) will take on 1. Bundesliga team SV Werder Bremen.

It's going to be a real cracker: VfB on song after 5 straight wins in the Regional League whilst Werder Bremen (5 times Cup Winners) are struggling in their division. Furthermore: this game is one of the old Northern Classics. VfB Lübeck used to play them before the introduction of the Bundesliga (1963) in the old Regional Premier North. VfB always got a bashing apart from 1957 when we won 7-3 !!!.

Ruedigger, it surprises me how a nation as populous as Germany and one which is obviously football crazy cannot support fully professional football at 3rd division level.
After all in England, we have 4 tiers of professional clubs with a semi pro Vauxhall conference bubbling under them.

Any idea why this is?
Or do people in germany tend to only support the bigger clubs?

ruediger
25-08-2001, 03:49 PM
I don't really know why.
It was as late as 1963 that a League was introduced covering the whole of the nation. We played in 5 regional leagues up until then. The championship decided in play-offs.

The league structure was reformed only last season when 5 regional league were scrapped for a Regionalliga North and South each.

The cup dream is over.

VfB Lübeck 2 (1) Werder Bremen 3 (2)

Almost a carbon copy of Palace's cup game with Liverpool in 1977
- when in the old Division 3:
The underdogs taking an early lead (Paul Hinshelwood) which didn't last that long. Finally a late consolation goal (George Graham).
In between: a cup battle to make the supporters go home happy.

VfB scored in 15. mins. Werder replied in 20 and 25.
A goal in 47. minutes for 1. Bundesliga Bremen didn't shock VfB too much as they put on pressure for long spells being rewarded with a great goal in 80. minutes.

The last 10 minutes were pure excitement unfortunately without producing a deserved equaliser.
Nevertheless the VfB players got a stand ovation after the final whistle. :p

5 played - 5 won. That's what I call a perfect start.

Tricky affair this Saturday (1pm BST) for VfB Lübeck when arch rivals TSV Eintracht Braunschweig come to "Lohmühle".

Braunschweig are founder members of the 1. Bundesliga and have been champions twice but lingering on in the Regionalliga for far too long. They've been throwing money around in recent years but missed out on promotion more than once.

10.000 plus gate expected with Braunschweig - a team VfB fans like to hate most - bringing with them around 1.500 (many of them hooligans). It's going to be a tough battle I'm afraid for VfB and the police alike (both wearing green and white ;) )

I don't expect VfB's 100% record to remain intact.
A point will be regarded as a good result.

VfB Lübeck missed out on promotion last year finishing 3. in the newly formed Regionalliga Nord :( (after having lead the division by 7 points with some 10 or 9 matches left).

Ironically VfB Lübeck had been runners-up twice the seasons before in the Regionalliga (old) when only the top-team qualified for a play-off to the 2. Bundesliga. That makes it 3 in a row. But I think this year is the year to celebrate our return to professional football.

VfB Lübeck played in 2. Bundesliga 1995/6 and 1996/7.

ruediger
09-10-2001, 06:01 PM
Rot-Weiss Essen were lucky to escape the drop. They managed to stay up by scoring in the very last minute.

Later club officials were found guilty of financial irregularities (club spend too much money on buying new players when not allowed to do so). This is why they got a 1point deduction (Lucky guys). Could have been worse.

SV Wilhelmshaven and Sachsen Leipzig were demoted because the FA regarded them as being insolvent.

Strict rules in semi-pro football here (which we still call "amateur").

You are putting salt into my wound.
RW Essen came to Lübeck Saturday before last and won 3-0 :grrr: (see above, page 6)

BTW: With its approx. 600.000 inhabitants, Essen comes in sixth place among major German cities. During the last century the Ruhr city became above all known for having the largest coal and steel industry on the European continent. Twin town is Sunderland.

Essen is the biggest city in Germany not to have a full-professional club. :D
(RWE have been in the 1. Bundesliga in the 70s but are only back at 3. level for the second season running)

Sorry. Should have scrolled upwards and spared you some grief. My memory of the Ruhr is of one giant sprawl. Do its cities and towns have that much separate identity? Or can inhabitants of Essen quite happily support Schalke or whoever, like people in Croydon follow Arsenal?

P.S. For some reason the expression 'Dortmund-Ems Canal' suddenly popped into my brain.

ruediger
09-10-2001, 06:30 PM
You're quite right. It is of one giant sprawl and its cities and towns haven't that much of a separate identity. Nevertheless the inhabitants of Gelsenkirchen, Essen or Dortmund are very, very proud of their community.

check: http://www.essen.de/ excellent english version.

Nevertheless, you can follow any big club in the Ruhr Region (which has changed dramatically).

Rot-Weiss Essen for their part can boast a pretty loyal bunch of followers. :p

My word that was great stuff.
VfB Lübeck's makeshift side - without a win in the last 4 matches - won convincingly 4-1. It could have been 10.

And even RW Essen lost 5-0. :D

This is going to be VfB Lübeck's promotion season.
The reason?

Regionalliga Nord (old format) 1998/1999
1. VfL Osnabrück 67 : 26 + 41 75 (failed out in play-offs)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. VfB Lübeck 73 : 33 + 40 73 :(
last home game versus VfL Osnabrück produced my favourite goal ever thankfully against VfL hate-keeper Uwe "Kevin Miller" Brunn ;)
http://www.vfb-luebeck.de/chronik/sais9899/bremser2.mpg

Regionalliga Nord (old format) 1999/2000
1. VfL Osnabrück 69 : 34 + 35 74 (promoted after play-offs)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. VfB Lübeck 74 : 34 + 40 70 :(

Regionalliga Nord (3. Bundesliga North now covering half the country) 2000/1
1 Union Berlin 36 21 10 5 73 promoted to 2. Bundesliga
2 SV Babelsberg 36 19 11 6 68 promoted to 2. Bundesliga
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3 VfB Lübeck 36 18 8 10 62 :(
Home win (instead of a defeat against Babelsberg) and we'd made it. :grrr:

This weekend fixtures sees the old northern classic VfL Osnabrück v. VfB Lübeck.

Around 500 will make the trip to Osnabrück which is 350 km away from Lübeck.
Kick-off on Saturday 2pm.

I'll be happy with a point.
Osnabrück are down from 2. Bundesliga and were tipped to top Regionalliga Nord straight away but they have made a very poor start.

I'm convinced it's going to be a double promotion celebration party next summer. :D

VfB = Verein für Bewegungsspiele.
Even in german not quite easy to understand. As Bewegungsspiele is a terminus no longer used these days.

Verein = club
für = for
Bewegung = movement
Spiele = games

so literally VfB means club for games (involving movements) - so no chess, gymnastics, athletics etc

ROFL. well done. :p

VfL = Verein für Leibesübungen.

Leib = old german word for "body" (no longer used)
Übungen = exercises

VfL = Club who's members are doing body exercises
but Luftkoepfe is so much better.

Friday night is football night.

VfB Lübeck entertain Fortuna Düsseldorf.

Düsseldorf have been in 1. Bundesliga until 1997. The former german champions have played in Europe on many occasions (in May 1979 Fortuna went down to FC Barcelona 4:3 aet. in the final of the European Cup Winners Cup).

Last season Fortuna Düsseldorf were relegated to Oberliga Nordrhein (local amateur league covering onyl parts of Northrhine-Westfalia) but were reinstalled because two other teams had failed to meet the financial demands set by the FA.

Fortuna Düsseldorf are sponsored by Germanys top punk rock band
"Die Toten Hosen". They are local lads and have supported the club all over the years. Fortuna's shirt has reached cult status. It's the best selling product only second to FC Bayern Munich's.

VfB did not play badly at Chemnitz. So I'm not to worried about being only fourth. VfB Lübeck are playing better when chasing the leaders rather than being in the top position themselves.

Next two games are at home against lowly Dresdner SC and Fortuna Köln. Unfortunately I'm unable to make it to the Cologne match as me and my son are in London town that weekend.

VfB Lübeck have to win this won to put pressure on the leading teams.
I'll be there shouting for the boy in green and white.

Next week I'll have to give VfB Lübeck v. bottom club Fortuna Cologne a miss as me and my son are crawling the streets in London Town.

Awful.

VfB Lübeck 1, Dresdner SC 2

This was one of the worst performances in years.

0-1 superb own goal with a rocket of a header. For my money "Goal of the Month".

1-2 penalty for shirt-pulling by centre-half Zallmann (34) a senior pro making his home debut :grrr:

Then a fully deserved red card for VfB club captain for a horrible two-footed tackle (near the touchline). ;(

Still hear the boos and jeers ringing in my ears after the final whistle went.

Thankfully only 3.800 were there to get punished with this London dungeon like show

VfB Lübeck are playing Regionalliga Nord.
League structure is as follows:

1. Bundesliga (full-pro)
2. Bundesliga (full-pro)
Regionalliga Nord / Regionalliga Süd (semi-pro)

Regionalliga is in fact 3. Bundesliga North and South. Regionalliga Nord and Süd are fed by 7 "Oberliga" Divisions (Amateur Premier Leagues)

Do Wolfsburg still have Roy Prager and is their manager still called something like Wolfgang Wolf(I may be completely wrong)?

ruediger
19-11-2001, 08:32 PM
Roy Präger is with Hamburger SV (but no longer the danger man he used to be at Wolfsburg). And Wolf surprinsingly is still in charge as manager but (just like Alex Fergusson somew 10 years ago) he was 45 mins away from being axed. But his side turned the match and have improved since then.

VfB Lübeck player are in the dock today.

Saturdays dismal performance will be openly discussed with Chairmen and the board of directors (private sponsors).

It is ecpected that several players will be fined:

http://www.vfb-luebeck.de/mannschaft/barwolf.jpgDaniel Bärwolf

Club captain Bärwolf is still playing down his horrible two-footed tackle which saw him sent off.

http://www.vfb-luebeck.de/mannschaft/arens.jpgBjörn Arens

Defender Arens saw fit to make jokes about his own goal when being interview on TV during the interval.

http://www.vfb-luebeck.de/mannschaft/przondziono.jpgMartin Przondiono

Midfielder Przondiono went straight to the dressing rooms after being substituted in 53 minutes and made gestures to the fans.

Palace and VfB Lübeck have many things in common. Could talk for hours.

I started following Palace when (or better: because) they were sh*t and a national joke (season 1973/4) - just like my home town club (I first went there in 1963).

Palace and VfB - full of unfulfilled potential.
Never boring = 95 % pain and 5 % joy. I love it .

A day later than expected VfB Lübeck officials have announced that players won't get any win bonusses on Saturday (v. Fortuna Cologne).

Instead the money goes to fund gate receipts as the club has cut the admission fee for that one to 50%.

The players will consider to take action (by losing ???????)

On Saturday VfB Lübeck play their last home game before the 10-week winterbreak. SV Werder Bremen ("Amateurs") will be a tough nut to crack. Lot of talent trying to make it to the Werder pro ranks.

VfB Lübeck have 2 of their 4 strikers suspended. The remainng two unforfunately are out of form. So all set for a cracking 5-3 thriller again.
VfB won at Bremen coming from 3-0 down, scoring 3 in the 88./89./90. minutes.

We would have played Bremen in the Inter Toto had we beaten Samsunspor (and I'd have STILL been in sodding Florida), so I usually look to see how there doing.

How does the "amatuer" status thing work? Is it like our reserves where the players could get called into the first team at anytime (and vice versa) or do they have to sign on to the Amatuers for a whole season?

Final question, what date does the season resume on?

Final question, what date does the season resume on?

The winterbreak ends on Feb. 23.
VfB Lübeck are due to start off with a thrilling clash with our "Brighton" that's Holstein Kiel. Some 65 km away Kiel is the political capital of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany's most northern Bundesland.
But Lübeck was enjoying free-ruling Hanseatic city status until that ugly man with this ridiculous little beard scrapped it (1937), thus Lübeck becoming part of Schleswig-Holstein (we've never accepted it!).

This is the political reason. But there's another thing causing immense rivalry. In the 70s VfB Lübeck - when a division below Holstein Kiel - had to play another team in Kiel. On the streets near a humble stadium some 100 Holstein fans jumped out of the bushes attacking the surprised VfB supporters injuring quite a few.

There have been many more friendly encounters since then.
Well, we love each other .....

Now to the "Amateur" status.
Amateur means nothing else but the players aren't on full pro terms.

SV Werder Bremen have 24 pro's but if they wish they are allowed to pick any of the amateurs (semi-pros in fact) - therefore making them ineligible to play in the A side for a couple of weeks once they have played three consecutive games in the Bundesliga.

Up to 4 pros per game are allowed to play down in the Amateur side. "Amateur" sides of full pro clubs are ineligible to go up to 2. Bundesliga. Most of the 1. Bundesliga teams have already "A" sides at 3. tier level (Regionalliga North or South).

Mainly young local hopefuls from the lower ranks are used here, quite a good chance to progress to full pro status.

SV Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen have A sides in Regionalliga Nord. Leverkusen btw pipped NTE's Wuppertaler SV for promotion last term. What a shame, I'd rather have a team with vocal support at Lohmühle than a 2. string without followers.

Welcome back Ruedi.

What happens if Werder Bremen A goes up to the 2. Bundesliga and Werder Bremen pro gets demoted to the 2. Bundesliga?

ruediger
07-12-2001, 06:52 PM
SV Werder Bremen Amateurs are NOT allowed to win promotion to 2. Bundesliga. Regionalliga (actually 3. Bundesliga North / South) are the highest they can get.

BTW: In the 80s VfB Lübeck were relegated to 4. level where VfB's 2. team was already playing. Consequently 2. Vfb team was demoted to 5. level.

Ah I see thanks for the prompt response sir.

At least Luebeck are once again in a strong position, and have a good chance of going into the winter break occupying a promotion slot having got over their recent poor run of form. Let's hope Palace can also recover from a similar recent run of form.

Out of interest, how often has Luebeck been up to the 2. or even 1. Bundesliga?

Also out of interest whatever happened to the Stuttgarter Kickers, who were up in the 1. some ten years back when VfB Stuttgart last took the title?

ruediger
07-12-2001, 10:48 PM
VfB Lübeck have never played 1. Bundesliga only 2 years in 2. Bundesliga 1995-7.

BTW:
83 - 93 VfB Lübeck were competing at 4. level (equivalent to Rymans)
93 - 95 old Regionalliga North.
95 - 97 2. Bundesliga
last 3 seasons always runners up to promotion places.

Stuttgarter Kickers were relegated from 2. Bundesliga last season and are now struggling at the foot of Regionalliga South. I hold happy memories of visits to Degerloch Stadium in the early 80s when living in Stuttgart.

Well thankyou, that certainly answers my questions, sir.

Degerloch I remember well, a few of the students at the Hermann-Hesse-Gymnasium were keen to turn me away from the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion, where the Kickers were unsuccessfully attempting to regain their 1. Bundeliga place. Mind you back then there were plenty of aweful 1. Bundeliga sides such as Dresden, Saarbruecken, Uerdignen, Nuernberg etc. At least everyone was united in their hatred of Bayern Muencshite.

Bundeliga sides such as Dresden, Saarbruecken, Uerdignen, Nuernberg etc. At least everyone was united in their hatred of Bayern Muencshite.

This is for you, hong_kong_hg: Stuttgarter Kickers, Stadion Degerloch.

Thanks Ruedi, that certainly looks like the ground I remember.. intimate is perhaps the politest description!

Thanks for the links too, and yes it was indeed Calw in the deepest darkest Black Forest, where "I woiss net, was Fritzle geda het" was to be oft heard...

Kennst Du das Land wo jeder lacht
Wo man aus Weizen spaetzle macht
Wo jede zweite Fritzle heisst
Und man noch ueber Balken scheisst...

Jens Scharping

This was VfB Lübeck's last home match in 2001
and what a wonderful occasion it was.

VfB - who are proud to have the best attack in their league - could field only one striker (due to suspensions and lack of form). Ironically forward Jens Scharping himself hadn’t scored in 800 minutes and once again he missed numerous chances including 2 "open" goals.

But the supporters kept shouting his name clapping him whenever he was on the ball. Then in 88 mins he was clean through - and he put the ball in the back of the net.

No escapade of joy, instead Scharping walked slowly to the corner flag, hands on his neck, head bowed as if to say: “Sorry, how could I score this one. All I wanted was to hit the corner flag.” Wonderful.

After the match jubilant VfB players walked round the pitch throwing Xmas presents into crowd. What a nice ending to 2001. Have to wait until Feb. 23 to see the boys in green and white in action again.

But why not have a pre-season VfB Lübeck v. Crystal Palace friendly.
VfB Lübeck played Leicester City (with a newly signed Mark Bright) and a couple of years ago Celtic were our opponents at Lohmühle.

Pretty good training facilities in the area as well. Quite a few Bundesliga teams and top clubs from eastern parts of Europe are here on a regularly basis to get gear themselves up for the forthcoming campaign.

So I'd like to see Neil the Eagle using his contacts to arrange this one for pre 2002/3. :)

With Ryanair (Stansted - Lübeck) offering bargains a strong Palace contingent could make it an enjoyable occasion.

Ruediger I have been dreaming of arranging a pre season tour of Hungary for years.

Unfortunately the facilities are poor and the opposition worse but the real problem is I believe the almost complete absence of golf courses in Hungary!

Doesn't cause me any problems cos I hate the game but I believe that pre-season tours and golf go together like the bbs and Ruediger.

Are there any large tracts of agricultural land that have been converted into leisure facilities in your part of the world?

Has that sad git Bernhard Langer had the opportunity to whistle "Winds of Change" whilst strolling down any local fairways?

If not forget it!

Plenty of beautiful golf courses around in this part of the country (Ostsee / Schleswig-Holstein / Hamburg). Not an easy choice.

SC Preussen Münster v. VfB Lübeck

Last match before the awful winter break (no snow or ice so far ... )

Münster is a beautiful friendly city with a population of about 280.000 of which 60.000 are registered as students! I used to live there from 1974 to 1981 and went to see SC Preussen on many occasions.

I'm looking forward ot this one as it is a rather emotional affair for me.
Not only did I met 19-year-old nurse Manuela who in 1980 became my wife. I spend happy years there - often tuning in to BFBS UK radio who beamed out BBC Radio 2 football (as it was then).

So I do remember very well where exactly I've been and what I've done when Palace scored 2 desperately late goals at Wrexham, or when Paul Hinshelwood scored the opening goal at home to Liverpool in the FA Cup.

Even more important:
I was telling ALL my fellow flatmates that Big Mal's Palace ("Crystal .... who?") would definetely make the headlines come next Sunday. Mighty Leedes would be no problems at all for the Eagles (It was my tightrope act but it worked, hehe).

And the night champions-elect Palace beat Burnley was fantastic.
Münster = Happy memories.

Ironically, for a year or so, the artist formerly known as Peaknutt - later to perform under the more real name of Stephenson Soundbyter - was living in the area as well. But it took me another 25 years to cross his paths on a wonderful day in March 2000 at the George in Borough High Street.

Life can be so strange.

Football clubs are NOT beaming out radio commentary. But you can tune in to radio stations who are covering Bundesliga football regularly.
Here are 2 major sites.

NDR 2, radio station for northern parts of germany:

or

WDR 2, radio station for listeners in the Ruhr Region / Northrhine-Westfalia (the heart of the country):

This happened to be Frank Neubarth. Ironically before this game he had been told that his contract at SV Werder Bremen Amateurs would NOT be renewed.

But what a sensational turn:
Neubarth, a former International, has now been appointed manager of FC Schalke 04. He's to take over at the famous german Bundesliga club at the end of the season.

This is typically german football nonsense:

VfB players report back for training on Monday morning only to find that all three pitches are unplayable. So they go by car to a council owned training ground (plastic pitch) only to find the gates closed.

Then VfB staff (21 semi-pros) make their way via a broken fence.
Great. It's business as usual. But still we're top of Regionalliga Nord.:)

Ruediger great to have you back after the winter break. I was sat at my laptop last night wondering what had happened to you.

We are still some 6-7 weeks off the resumption of the spring season here in Hungary.

Újpest have landed two more Czech players with the signings of Lubos Kozel and Radek Slonik from Slavia and Sparta Prague respectively.

Thanks for your kind words, Pistike. I have to confess that I regularly check Ujpest results (and Fradi  ).

Hertha BSC still play at the old (out-dated) Olympia Stadium a vast bowl (very similar to the Nep Stadium). There are plans in the pipeline to build a new stadium on the same site but I doubt this will ever materialise.
