View Full Version : Liverpool after Soares?

The somewhat dubious Teamtalk are carrying this story. No smoke without fire?

Reds eye Eagles ace Soares

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is keeping tabs on Crystal Palace young gun Tom Soares and may tempt the Eagles with a January bid for him.

The Anfield chief has made no secret of the fact he wants to add a right-sided midfielder to his playing squad in the New Year transfer window.

Benitez has played skipper Steven Gerrard in that role in recent games - but does not see that as a long-term option.

Soares caught Benitez's eye when he impressed on many occasions in Palace's ultimately-doomed Premiership campaign last season.

The 19-year-old has continued his fine form in the Championship this season - and appeals to Benitez as he can play in the middle of the park as well as on the right flank.

They wont sign him to play on their right. He's not good enough to play out of position for Liverpool.

Absolutely, vastly over rated and only in the team because Dowie has still failed to get a decent central midfield player despite us needing one for two years. He is very fast but cannot pass, head or shoot which will certainly hinder his progress as a professional footballer although it hasn't stopped Crouch from earning an England cap.

A Liverpool fan at work sent me this quote from an "insider" on a Liverpool fans site:

"Tom Soares is being closely followed by Liverpool and his progress is receiving very good feedback and Rafa was apparently extremely impressed with his performance against us in the Carling Cup. Could well be a move in the summer but for now there are more pressing targets."

Liverpool only interested because the scout pronounces the surname as Soarez and Benitez thinks he is Spanish.

Would be suprised to see a move come about.

Would have to be 1.5million at the tops!

As long as Dowie's here Soares will be going nowhere.

We don't need to sell and he's contracted long-term. I would imagine it would take a big bid for Jordan to sell.

Personally I think it would be a big mistake for him to go there at this stage of his career when he needs to be playing regularly.

Couldn't we persuade the scallys to take Borrowdale instead?

Soares has alot of potential, I think we'd be foolish to let him go.

Liverpool pretend to know alot about him.
One of them did say that he reminded him of a young Patrick Viera though!

they think he's a winger and still want him, thank god they dont know he's a hell of alot better in the middle, but honestly couldnt see him getting much first team football with Gerrard and Alonso

I think Soares is intelligent enough to know that if he were to join Liverpool now he'd spend 3 years in their reserves and then be let go on a free transfer to Tranmere or somewhere like that woith his potential unfulfilled.

Sorry, but potential or not, I cannot see the current European champions bidding for Tom Soares to play in their midfield (anywhere). He is not excelling in a Championship team let alone one in the Champions League. Teamtalk is full of bull.

Oh and for the record if anyone offered 1.5million, or 1 million for that matter, I think he would go.

After a decidedly mediocre display vs SU, I can't say I'm that bothered.

No chance - with the fact we don't need to sell and ID and SJ have both been very complimentary a bid in that area would be easy to reject. Same sort of thing as AJ - value to Palace far higher than what would be a realsitic market value, which is probably in the area you suggest. If SJ starts shifting this sort of player, ID won't be far behind -and understandably.
