PALACE OFFER TRIAL TO DE VRIES
by Stuart James & Gerrit van Leeuwen

EXCLUSIVE
DORDRECHT '90 striker Mark de Vries is poised to join First Division promotion hopefuls Crystal Palace on trial.
The 26-year-old striker has already netted 11 goals this season and his form has alerted Palace as well as First Division rivals Millwall.

De Vries is out of contract in the summer and Dordrecht are hoping to cash in him now, to avoid losing him on a Bosman-style free transfer at the end of the campaign.

It is understood Trevor Francis' Eagles have first option on the Surinamese-born frontman and will make their move if he impresses during the trial.

The Eagles are keen to bolster their strikeforce and have recently signed Leicester striker Trevor Benjamin on loan. Francis has also been linked with a move for Exeter's flying Welshman Christian Roberts, who is also out of contract next summer.

What?

Anyone know anything about him. Looked on champ, stats were hidden so had to scout, but his goal ratio (allthough not real) was fantastic. When i got them his stats actually looked quite good. I think he may be a good signing! ;)

Mmmn, top scorer in an average side in the Dutch 1st, which is equivelant to our 2nd Division. Hardly spectacular.

Hell, even Marco Boogers has 10 in that team and he isnt a great player by any stretch of the imagination. Compare this signing to the Dutch player linked with at the beginning of the season, Jan Venegoor of Hesselink, 12 for PSV this year.

I wonder if he will be as good as Jeroen Boere?

I'm not sure too many Ajax, PSV or Feyenoord fans would agree with you!

Well, since Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord doesn't play in the dutch 1. division I don't see why they would disagree... these clubs play in the Eredivisie.

The Dutch 1st is a weak league. De Vries has maxed 11 goals for Dordrecht in his career.

This isnt slagging the player, its simple facts.

It could well be that Dordrecht dont allow his full ability to shine.

Its worth a trial I guess.

Seeing as a top scorer in an average Div 2 side (Brett Ormerod) just went for 1.75 million, and that Mr Seaweed himself the over-hyped and potentially just-a-bit-better-than-average-Div 1-striker Zamora wasn't sold by the SeaScum to Ipswich in the close season following a 3million bid, I'd say a trial for De Vries is good business.

De Vries on a de Free - not bad !

AJ1969
10-01-2002, 09:24 PM
All I can say is that the NL clubs mentioned are 2nd rate clubs - the NL 1st division is like the conference. Also, given that their so called 1st rate clubs (PSV, Ajax, Feyenoord) haven't even spotted de vries, I don't have much hope that he will be a good signing. If he was any good, one of the NL big 3 would definitely have had him by now (not biblically of course).

He didn't arrive until yesterday so he didn't play. I don't think he's free. The reason why Dordrecht are willing to let him go now is that he will be on a free at the end of the season, so they want some cash. Hardly be a fortune though.

Is he from the same club and or agent as Kenny Verhoene was last season?

Beanie
11-01-2002, 01:44 PM
According to the Adder he didn't arrive this week - in fact Trevor Francis says he knows nothing about him, and it is total press talk.

Any suggestions where the very first reference to this trial was? I see Dave's quote - but from what august organ was this taken?

Steve Kember told me at the reserve game this week, that they were hoping to get him over by the end of the week. However they still had to do some work with their people to release him for a trial rather than a loan.

BUNGLE
11-01-2002, 05:15 PM
Why don't we want him on a loan? atleast then we could see him up against better opposition.

Daddy Long
11-01-2002, 05:20 PM
We only get a certain amount of player loans allowed per season. It makes sense to try and get De Vries on trial and limit the loans incase we are in dire need later in the season. Also we don't have to pay anything out for a trial player.

If you're trying to say he'll score goals down here - remember ALL ex-Palace players have it in their contract that they must score against Palace, and he almost counts as ex- Palace. Lets not base too much on one week, unless you expect Darren Byfield to score 184 league goals this season
