They say you should never go back, and many an ex-Palace hero would've done well to remember that (Hopkin, for instance).

However, I believe that you can always come home. Dougie's not a Palace hero, he's Palace to his beating heart.

Best of luck, Dougie.

The most talented, intelligent footballer to grace a Palace shirt in the last 40 years. A light has gone out at Selhurst Park. I doubt if we will ever see another Dougie at Palace, not just in footballing terms, but in the unique relationship he has with the fans.

Our loss is Southend's gain.

I cannot see how being a member of the "Trust" and being an employee of Crystal Palace can be anything other than a conflict of interests.

Maybe he's hoping to launch a takeover bid for Palace with a Scottish consortium or something?

My all time favourite player. Woke up this morning having given up on the transfer forum at about half eleven last night. Couldn't be bothered to read through 80 odd pages and so went straight to the Southend website where a picture of Dougie dominates the home page. I'm not ashamed to say it brought a tear to my eye. Very sad day, but inevitable and life must go on. I pray that we draw Southend in the cup and that his goals get them promoted. Thanks for the memories - I hope its not the end of your association with Palace.

Supporting Palace can be a demoralising experience at times. It is players like Dougie Freedman that make the whole thing worthwhile. Skilful, exciting, great finisher, in his younger days full of running, with never any lack of effort, even when older and the earlier pace had been diminished.
Never a bad word to say about the club,an old style pro,not a money grabbing primadona.
If faced with the hypothetical choice of Dougie or Ronaldo, I would take Dougie every single time.
Thank you very much Dougie, you made a forty five year old man cry like a child at Stockport :lux: and all the very best of luck to you. I hope we see you again at Selhurst Park.

In my 11 1/2 years as a Palace fan you are probably the only player I have seen who plays like a fan, heart on his sleeve and loving the club. Other players have come and gone, tempted away by the lures of more money or premiership football but you have maintained throughout your Palace career that you love playing for us and I think it is fair to say that you have been a great ambassador for football in general let alone our club.

I hope that you continue to play exciting football with the Shrimpers and as they are only 30 minutes down the road from me I'll no doubt pop down and see how you're doing. A 2 year contract with the option to extend for a further year means that you could be away from Selhurst for a long time but hopefully you'll come home eventually and who knows, maybe you'll be the next Coppell!

Good luck Doug! LEGEND!

Cheers for everything Dougie,

For being proud to play for the club, to scoring the goal that saved our bacon, to always conducting yourself in a way I would be proud to act myself.

You have been everything a footballer should be and we will never forget that. We feel lucky to have had a player like you pull on the shirt and I'm sure that not many of us expect another player like you again.

Stay in touch with the Palace mate, come back when you can and best of luck in the rest of your career. We will all be following closely.

Cheers Dougie, take it easy and best of luck with the badges.

My first match was one of Dougies. I was about 5 then, I am now 17 and have watched players come and go, but only 1 has saved us from League 1, scored goals to put us towards the Premiership and nearly keep us up in the Prem.

On my wall, I have a pic of his first club profile photo, next to that is his autographed photo from last year, the difference is huge, we have watched a young lad grow into a veteran footballer in front of eyes.

Good Luck Dougie, you wont be forgotten.

Would of been the only bright light left here, shame the dark star Warnock was to insecure about his head status that he let a powerful and heroic member of our club leave. Warnock cannot erase the memories you spent with us, nor can he erase your name being chanted from the terraces for era's to come.

Mr Freedman you are one of my favourite palyers over the last 45 years. You had skill, dedication, determination and intelligence. I will rmember some fabulous goals and performances. I wish you well. I hope return to end up as Palace's greatest managers of all time. I hope you return to selhurst in the cup so we can all show our support and deep affection for you.
