View Full Version : Duo chase Paddy Mac

:(

Skysports.com understands Sheffield United and Norwich are chasing Crystal Palace defender Paddy McCarthy.

The cash-strapped Eagles are facing intense pressure to hold on to a number of their squad this summer.

Defender McCarthy is among those players coveted by other Championship sides, despite the 26-year-old enduring an injury-hit campaign last term.

A long-term shoulder problem left him sidelined for several months but he still managed to make 20 Championship starts, including in the last day 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday which kept the Eagles up at the Owls' expense.

His performances have caught the eye of fellow Steel City side Sheffield United, whose promotion bid faltered last term, while Norwich are keen to bolster their squad after regaining their Championship status at the first time of asking.

Footballers are not irreplaceable, players come and go.

Those that go will remain in our memories after last seasons heroics. They really have left on a high and I doubt they would have performed as well for us next season.(if the club survives)! If we do, those that come will soon be part of the fabric of our lives, loved or hated!

God this is depressing :(

My thoughts too. And the reality is we are a long way from a conclusion to this whole episode. We might as well just start transfer threads for every one of our half decent players now as they are all going to get linked with a move away at some point. I just hope me manage to keep hold of a few of them.

Lets go back to what we know/think and not panic:-

1. BG has said players have to be marketed.
2. Players have been marketed.
3. Some - possibly high wage earners - will have to go.
4. CPFC 2010 may complete takeover and therefore have lower liabilities going forward.
5. CPFC 2010 may block certain sales (though at the moment they're not funding the club, so aren't in a position to dictate things).
6. SJ's stated position is to block CVA.
7. Until CVA date (at least 10th June), this will continue.
8. Transfer window opens ?1st July (though some players may sign pre-contracts with new clubs before that).
9. All in all, it's likely to continue like this until the CVA meeting is held, when we might end up with:-
(a) a club;
(b) a ground (both owned by CPFC 2010);
(c) some players.
10. New ownership and new manager to be appointed, who will need (some) new players (he may already be lining them up, who knows?)

Thanks goodness Sky Sports and the tabloid press have the world cup to 'build up', otherwise we'd be getting more depressed in the next couple of weeks.

I'll be more gutted about losing him than Danns / Ambrose / Speroni / Hill / Clyne

A real inspiration on the pitch. He was the catalyst for our decent end of season run.

Sad to see some of these good players go, or look like they're about to go. But we've seen what happens when he have players who command a little more money in wages than we can really afford.

Of course, it could be disastrous to lose the spine of our team, and players with experience.

However, I prefer to be optimistic. This really could be the dawn of a new era at Palace. We've been limping along, trying to live beyond our means for too long now. Our play has been far too results oriented, foregoing entertainment in an attempt to gain success.

I'm hoping for a new direction of scouring the league for younger, cheaper talent, and bringing through even more of the kids. Players who can be moulded and taught to play football the right way. If it takes a while, and even involves a relegation, I think it could be a good thing in the long run.

Is anyone asking the players if they want to go ? I think there are all sorts of doom mongers, agent provocateurs, and n'er do wells starting spurious rumours and feeding them to the gullible and the panic struck. I will keep a sense of proportion about all this until I hear it confirmed.

Next year will be an academy team by the way are players keep appearing in the press, as we all know most of the cash that we recieve will be going on costs, so once we finally have a club owned by cp2010 then a manager appointed, it will cost them alot more money to buy players who are still availbale, just to cover those sold for a pittance.

SHEFFIELD United are ready to make a bid for Crystal Palace's Irish defender Paddy McCarthy.

Palace could be forced to sell some of their top players for financial reasons and centre-half McCarthy is one of their main assets. McCarthy, 27, joined Palace from Charlton in 2008, after previous spells at Manchester City and Leicester City, and he made a big impression last season, recovering from a serious shoulder injury after a five-month layoff to play in the last eight games for the Eagles and help them stay in the Championship.

No we havent

All of the players that have left were forced into making a decision to protect themselves (as they were out of contract0

Had the take over been a month earlier maybe they would all still be here,or maybve GB would have let them go anyway.

But none have left because they 'dont want to play' for the club

Are we not? with nearly half of next seasons gates likely to be getting in for free and the board stating that we have to run with in our means, then I for one think we will hardly be flush with it.

Not flush but not 'cash strapped' either. Big difference.

Agents were contacted about all our squad when the Administrator thought he needed player sales to keep the club afloat. A lot of these rumours are founded on those desperate bargain basement deals forged in totally different circumstances and now defunct. This is a non story unless Blackwell has a few of the Porno guy's Spammer millions he would like to steer our way :D

I fully understand that those sales are no longer required as CPFC 2010 have said as much, but I still feel that if clubs come in with good offers for our better players who are on high wages, that these bids will seriously be considered. As I said in another post with half our gates getting in for free next season, cash flow without the board subsidising the club throughout the season has to be an issue.

I managed to intercept this document from the Palace offices on its way to Neil Warnock at Loftus Road.

The football club Crystal Palace, depleted by low morale, dwindling supplies, and soldiers deserting by the just-under-half-a-dozen, were surrounded by the evil Warnock vultures.

Upon hearing news that CPFC2010 were rampaging their way through the Warnockian lines from the South with reinforcements, stand in General McAuliffe (codename the Dougster) sent this document to Field Marshall Warnock, thanking him for his interest in knowing whether he would like to surrender his army etc, etc, before politely informing him that the answer would be 'NUTS'.

I don't see what all the fuss is about. There are reports about our players departing every bloody day. To be completely honest I don't think he's that good'a defender anyway. How hard is it to find a defender that can pass, boot it and head it? I don't think we have any good centre backs. I think Burley will sort it out. I've got faith in him.
