All appearances and goals are from the Palace programme, and are regularly checked to make sure that they are not wrong. If there is no record in the programme, then Wikipedia is used, and after Wikipedia it comes down to my memory! So please correct me if any of it is wrong.

Has Flahavan got another year?

I thought he signed a 3 year contract, I might be mistaken

I know young Charlie Mann signed a 1 year deal last summer, nothing seems to have mentioned at all about him.

ambrose is gone.
When he does it looks like he will be kicking and screaming. It breaks my heart when we have a decent player who very much wants to stay but is being forced out due to severe mismanagement of the club. "Ambrose is an Eagle"

New thread for this season hopefully to show the squad, looks likely to be an ever changing squad this season, so hopefully this is where we will be able to see for sure.

Hopefully a mod will be able to make this a sticky, and change the title whenever necessary.

Players in:

David Wright (RB/LB/CB)
Proven at this level, no fee paid, great success

Players out:
Nicky Carle - Big waste of money - Thank frig for that!
James Comley (released) - cant comment on this chap
Matthew Wright (released) "
Hakeem Adelakun (released) "
Michael Abnett (released) "

Johannes Ertl (to Sheffield Utd - out of contract) - bit of a pity, would've been good to see how he performed for another season at least, he probably more settled and adapting to English game now. Not the end of the world.

Shaun Derry (to QPR - out of contract) - a great servant to the club, thanks for your efforts, but its time to freshen up the team a bit

Clint Hill (released) - just what we needed in our hour of need. Big fan of his, sad to see him go but once again, we've probably seen his best years now.

Danny Butterfield (released) - Good season last season but has otherwise been bit-part for us for a few seasons. wish him all the best

Matt Lawrence (released) - Prob spent a year or two too many at this level but was v. handy when caled upon (sometimes ;) )

SQUAD

Goalkeepers

JuliŠn Speroni = Jesus
Darryl Flahavan = if he signs another contract he knows is only to keep him as a back-up GK, if he's not happy with that, we can find a replacement Charlie Mann ( = hope he gets some first team action this season, Yeovial away might be too big a test for a debut.

Full Backs
Lee Hills (LB/LM) = believed he had accepted a new contract offer. Keeps battling back from injury. He's never convinced me but will give him another chance come October if he is still about
Nathaniel Clyne (RB/LB) contract till 2012 (None) = Give this man a new contract
David Wright (RB/LB/CB) see above

Centre Backs
Paddy McCarthy (CB) contract till 2011 - hopefully can remain injury free a bit longer, will be looking to impress this season to earn a new contract
Jack Holland (CB, CM) (None) Can't comment on this chap
Alex Wynter (CB) Contract till 2013 (None) "
Claude Davis (CB) contract till 2011 I suspect this will be his last season here. Great squad option but I dont think has quite enough to be a regular starter.

Central Midfielders
Neil Danns (CM/RM/LM) contract till 2011 - key player for us. Guessing he is banned for the first two matches of this campaign? If we can get the Harper deal done, the I hope these both become gems. Both joined us off the radar after a spell of injury but have both elements required to be a good defender. Going forward and tracking back.
Alassane N'Diaye (CM) contract till 2013 - Will this chap be a Hayden Mullins, Leigertwood, Soares or Steve Thomson as a holding midfielder, am looking forward to finding out!

Wide Midfielders
Sean Scannell (ST/RM) Hopefully will make the break into the first team and show us how much promise he does(n't) have this season :D
Kieron Djilali (RM/LM) contract till 2010 (offered new contract... Well then sign it you pillock!)
Kieron Cadogan (RM/LM) contract till 2010 (also offered new contract, sign it!)

Darren Ambrose (RM/LM) contract till 2011 - need to tie this guy down to a new deal when the season gets going. Is he still as happy and in such good form as he was under Warnock? Probably gonna cost a fair wedge but he is at the peak of his career age wise, seems happy and is v. consitent for a fair player.

Forwards
Calvin Andrew (ST) contract till 2010 (offered new contract) should be a squad player next season. I wonder if he'll sign or move somewhere where he is guarenteed to start. Never really been convinced myself.

Nathaniel Pinney (ST) (None) - is on my facebook, thats about as much as I know of this chap lol

Alan Lee (ST) contract till 2011 - good stuff, hopefully bangs in a fair few this season, very handy target man but has expressed a love for east Anglia.

Stern John (ST) contract till 2010 - should probably let him go really. a bit passed it.

Wilfred Zaha (ST) no nothing about him

************************************************** ************************

Anyway, the point of all that is I am so shocked and pleased about the judgement over who has been kept and released by our coaching and scouting staff. Aside from possibly Etrl, who we couldn't offer a contract at the time, those who have been let go have been wise releases.

Really looking forward to next season. :lux:

Subs: Mann, Barratt, Hills, Holland, Djilali, Cadogan, Andrew

Is how I could see us lining up if we had a game tomorrow. Obviously hypothetically Hills wouldn't be injured.

Seems to lack a bit of width but really strong attacking through the middle. Does anyone think Ambrose would be better playing on a wing although he isn't an out and out winger, or playing behind the strikers? Danns and Dorman aren't naturally wingers either so I'm getting the impression we'll play through the middle, but on the ground rather than overly direct. That to me would fit either a 4-3-3 with a midfield of Danns, Dorman and Ambrose which seems a bit lightweight, or a diamond with a defensive midfield protecting the back four.

The squad does look a bit threadbare too but that's to be expected due to just coming out of admin, but I'm hugely optimistic with the way things are lining up. Add a striker or two, a midfielder and maybe one more defensive option and we've got a mighty fine squad.

The future looks bright :p

I'd do a 4-1-3-2 but you're correct about the direction of attack. With Ambrose, Dorman and to some extent Danns, we're a team that is designed to attack down the middle.

Lee is going to play a huge role in the setup as a holding player that sets up Dorman and Ambrose. Any width we get is from Scanell chasing balls down the corners.

Should be an interesting season.

He's a Warnock player anyway. He signed him at Sheff United as well. Just done a little squad assessment, give it a read and tell me what you think:

So, tonight is Palace's first pre-season friendly, and our first game under new manager George Burley. It is expected that Palace are to play with a squad filled with trialists, and rumours going around on the BBS suggest that the likes of Dean Morgan, Liam Bridcutt, Lewis Price and Mark Randall are to play a part, with many more unknown as of yet. We are rumoured to be about to announce the signing of a goalkeeper, presumably Price, and a Premier League striker before the Chelsea game on Saturday, but how many new players do we actually need?

Goalkeepers

1. Julian Speroni
2. Charlie Mann

So, we have two goalkeepers. Darryl Flahaven was released this summer, but he was never really used anyway during his tenure at SE25, and during the latter stages of last term the inexperienced youth player Mann stepped in on the bench. He was unused, but could be one for the future. But what if Speroni gets injured? Mann isn't ready for the npower Championship yet - he has never played a professional game at any level - so maybe we should loan him out for experience. But that would mean getting in another 'keeper to cover Speroni. And besides, if we really do want to move up in the league and the pyramid, is not having a professional back-up 'keeper really a wise move.

My verdict: Really, we need a back-up keeper. As I mentioned in my opening paragraph, that will probably by Lewis Price, a 25 year old who played about a dozen games in the Premier League with Derby a few years back, and has a very good penalty-saving record.

Defenders

1. Nathaniel Clyne
2. David Wright
3. Lee Hills
4. Claude Davis
5. Adam Barrett
6. Paddy McCarthy

We currently have just 6 defenders. After the departures of Butterfield, Lawrence, Hill and Ertl last month we looked to be really struggling at the back with just 4 defenders, two of which were still under 20 and one was injured until December at least. However, in David Wright, George Burley has a full back capable of playing on either side, and in Adam Barrett an experienced defender and leader. But, really, we still need at least two defenders.

My verdict: We should aim to try and get two more defenders, ideally one more centre-back, or maybe use Alex Wynter if he is ready for the step up, and a left-back. We were linked with Stephen Jordan but it appears he is off to Pompey, so we will have to keep looking. Should Clyne go, though, we will need to look for another right-back.

Midfielders/Wingers

1. Darren Ambrose
2. Neil Danns
3. Andy Dorman
4. Sean Scannell
5. Alasanne N'Diaye
6. Kieron Djilali

It is clear we are more-or-less sorted in the attacking midfielders and wingers department - Ambrose got 20 last season, Danns oozes class, we have heard very good things about new midfielders Andy Dorman, and Scannell hopefully can kick on from his stalled growth as a player under Burley, while we have yet to see the true potential that Djilali possesses. However, under Burley, who is known to be good with youngsters, and started of Ambrose's career, all of these should flourish. However, maybe a back-up winger on the left is needed, although Ambrose can play there if Scannell is to occupy the right hand side. That list, though, shows how we are crying out for a defensive midfielder. Whether or not we will actually use one is yet to be seen, but nonetheless we need one in the squad. N'Diaye shows glimpses of class and skill, such as he great build-up play for the second goal at Hillsborough "that day" but as of yet hasn't been consistent, and has often been clumsy and late in his tackling. Derry and Ertl left, and we now have a void in that position.

My verdict: A defensive midfield should be one of our main priorites, followed by a left winger, although Danns can play there. We have been linked with James Harper, and have reportedly had bids turned down for Owen Garvan, who would be a great signing, not sure if a necessary one though.

Strikers

1. Alan Lee
2. Calvin Andrew
3. Wilfred Zaha

Fans' favourite Alan Lee is now close to having God status at SE25, but like Calvin Andrew he is a ball winning striker, and what Palace need for him to thrive is a small, quick poacher who can run on to his flick ons. This may be Zaha, but we shouldn't be relying on him this season, we need to let him grow.

My verdict: Get a quick finisher to play alongside Lee or Andrew. Clinton Morrison was rumoured, and now has signed for Wednesday, and Simeon Jackson has also been mentioned. Whether a deal for the latter actually comes to fruition or not is still to be seen, but he is the kind of player we need right now if we are to be competitive in this league.

Really, we need a goalkeeper, a centre-back, a left-back, a defensive midfielder, a left-winger, and a striker. 6 players. Obviously, we could have a few back-ups on top, and none are completely necessary right now, but we will need depth and options if we are to make a play-off challenge and sustain it throughout the season.

To have a full squad, IMO, we would need:

3 Goalkeepers (Speroni, Price, Mann)

2 Right-backs (Wright, Clyne)
2 Left-backs (Hills)
4 Centre backs (McCarthy, Davis, Barrett)

2 Defensive midfielder
4 Central Midfielders (Danns, Dorman)
4 Wingers, at least one being a lefty (Ambrose, Scannell, Djilali)

2 Small strikers (Zaha)
2 Target men (Andrew, Lee)

That is a squad of 24. We have 16. You could, I suppose chuck in N'Diaye as a CM, but not sure if he will play much of a part this year.

The list could look like this with a few trialists snapped up:

3 Goalkeepers (Speroni, Price, Mann)

2 Right-backs (Wright, Clyne)
2 Left-backs (Hills, Ousafane)
4 Centre backs (McCarthy, Davis, Barrett)

2 Defensive midfielder (Radosavljevic, Baiocco)
4 Central Midfielders (Danns, Dorman, Colace, Garvan)
4 Wingers, at least one being a lefty (Ambrose, Scannell, Djilali)

2 Small strikers (Zaha)
2 Target men (Andrew, Lee)

But we would still need three players more.

Cadogan is a wide player whereas Scannell is a striker so if you put them both in those positions it will be more representative of what we have.

To use your suggestion but with a few changes:

3 Goalkeepers (Speroni, Price, Mann)

4 Centre backs (McCarthy, ?Davis?, Barrett)

2 Defensive midfielder (?Radosavljevic?, ?Baiocco?)

4 Wingers, at least one being a lefty (Ambrose, Cadogan, Djilali)

2 Small strikers (Zaha, Scannell)

From that we would need to sign a LB (Ousafane suggested), check Davis is returning and buy 1 or 2 Centre backs, sign 2 DM's the 2 trailists suggested, sign another Centre mid, another left footed winger. That is another 7 to come in.

It also gives us a very midfield heavy squad, and i have left Ambrose on as a wide player even though i would say he is needed more centrally.

From the pre-season games what sort of formation has GB used?

The most glaring weak spot is our attack. We cannot expect Ambrose to carry us through another season getting 20 goals, and none of our strikers being goalgetters it makes me wonder who's gonna score our goals.

Surely the likes of Hills, Andrew, Dijali and Cadogan must have signed new deals? wouldn't their old ones have run out at the end of June? they have been given squad numbers and presumably will figure tomorrow in some capacity? unless they are "trialists"?

It's actually three goals: Preston, April 2010; Shef Wed (Cup) Jan 2010; Reading August 2008. And in his defense, he's played 90 minutes only ten times (plus an 87 minute run) but on twelve occassions, he's played 10 minutes or fewer.

Or... he's played at least an hour only 14 times but less than quarter of an hour 17 times and between 15 and 20 minutes six times.

However, his goals per minute ratio is about one every 9.5 hours compared with Alan Lee's one every 8 hours or Shefki Kuqi's one every 4.5 hours.

Did this summary before the season begun, half way through the season will have a look at how the squad looks now:

Goalkeepers

1. Julian Speroni
2. Lewis Price
3. Wes Foderingham
4. Charlie Mann

We now have four keepers, though only 2 of those have any Football League experience, however Wes seemed very good when he played in the Bromley friendly. Price is yet to be used, and Speroni recently signed his new 3 and a half season deal, so it would appear there is no need for a new guy. If Jules were to pick up an injury I am sure Price could step in for a few games, and if it is a long injury again we would look at Price or an emergency loan. Mann and Foderingham both are young, but inexperienced, and in my opinion it would be worth sending one of them out on loan. I know Foderingham has already been out to Bromley this year but maybe to a League Two side? He needs games, and IMO Mann should carry on growing in the academy before going out on loan.

My verdict: We signed Price in the close season, so we have back-up for Jules, and we have 3rd and 4th choice keepers in Charlie Mann and Wesley Foderingham. Don't need any new players here, and with Jules' new contract I can't see there being much movement in the foreseeable future.

Defenders

1. Nathaniel Clyne
2. David Wright
3. Lee Hills
4. Claude Davis
5. Adam Barrett
6. Paddy McCarthy

Like in the summer, we only have 6 defenders, excluding Gardner and Bennett, who go back to their parent clubs tomorrow. After the departures of Butterfield, Lawrence, Hill and Ertl last summer we really lost the core of our defence, and with Hills out injured still, Clyne still not signing a new deal and Paddy, Barrett and Claude looking inconsistent and injury prone, we really need more men. Gardner and Bennett were good here, but even with them available we still struggled to field a back four at times.

My verdict: We need to sign three more defenders, in my opinion. We certainly need a new centre-back and a new full back. For depth, we could do with another centre-back on top of that, but I am sure that a youth player could step up to the "5th centre-back" position if need be. Linked with Bhasera and Johnson, if we sign them I would still feel we need a new centre-back as in my opinion they are not good enough to walk into our team without competition.

Midfielders/Wingers

1. Darren Ambrose
2. Neil Danns
3. Andy Dorman
4. Sean Scannell
5. Alasanne N'Diaye
6. Kieron Djilali
7. Alex Marrow
8. Owen Garvan
9. Kieran Cadogan

Ambrose has signed a new contract, and Marrow is close to signing permanently. We have just about enough going forward - Ambrose and Danns are always a threat, and it seems Scannell is playing well since returning from injury. Dorman has been a monumental let down so far this season, and Garvan has been very hit-and-miss, and for me that list shows how inexperienced our midfield is. We have lost the midfield battles more often than not this season, and as a result there has been huge pressure on our defence. For me, it is key that we get the most out of the players we have, and bring in an attacking player. We badly need another senior winger, probably a left-footer, because at the moment we are very weak going forward, and injuries to Ambrose and Marrow mean that we are often very weak there.

My verdict: We need at least one more winger, and we could do with another attacking midfielder. In my opinion in Marrow and Garvan we have capable defensive midfielders, it is just a case of getting the most out of them, and it is important that the new manager does that.

Strikers

1. Pablo Counago
2. Calvin Andrew
3. Wilfred Zaha
4. Steffen Iversen
5. Jon Obika

Selling Alan Lee and not replacing him was a big mistake in my opinion, although Pablo Counago has shown on occasion that we can hold up the ball well. Steffen Iversen signed yesterday and knows where the goal is, but is again a big man to hold up play and win flick ons and he will not score 20 goals a season. There is also Calvin Andrew, who gives everything when he plays, but again is a ball winner, not a match winner. We will win flick ons, but we need somebody to partner one of them. Fans' favourite Alan Lee is now close to having God status at SE25, but like Calvin Andrew he is a ball winning striker, and what Palace need for him to thrive is a small, quick poacher who can run on to his flick ons. Zaha could play this role, but we desperately need a player who can finish. There is also Obika, but he couldn't care less about this club and shows it.

My verdict: Get a quick finisher to play alongside Iversen, Counago or Andrew. We need a Charlie Austin type player who is scoring well at the moment and knows how to finish. The lower leagues may be the best way to go, with Leigh Griffiths, Jordan Rhodes, Adam Le Fondre and Austin all linked, but we really need a small nippy goal getter.

Really, we need a centre-back, and left-back, and winger, and centre midfielder and a striker to have a decent squad, and it will be hard to get all of them, so 2 on loan defenders and an on loan centre-mid would mean we can spend the necessary money to get a good striker and winger in.

I think we need a CM with a bit of bite about him, an out and out left back, a left footed midfielder rather than always playing a right footer out there and someone at CB and CF to take the pressure off the others. I know getting all is highly unrealistic, just trying to work out how our squad looks at the moment and where we most need to look. I'm sure Dougie and the team are well on top of this though! ;)

I know getting all is highly unrealistic, just trying to work out how our squad looks at the moment and where we most need to look. I'm sure Dougie and the team are well on top of this though! ;)

I posted this a few weeks back, here's what I thought:

Did this summary before the season begun, half way through the season will have a look at how the squad looks now:

Goalkeepers

IMO, we still need a centre-back (Fonte, or somebody that can play well with Paddy, otherwise he should be dropped IMO), a left-back with pace and good positioning (Tommy Spurr?), a central midfield player who has grit and determination and has runs the game and will lead the side (a Watson/Derry-esque player) a left winger with pace (Sinclair/Moses/Routledge) but also has that touch of class (Kolkka) and a striker, either Vaughan who can play as a target man with Easter or as the "running striker" with Iversen, or a goalscorer from lower leagues (Austin/Rhodes/Le Fondre/Griffiths)

Really difficult position for Dougie.

Rush and bring in poor quality and we have what Burley did & relegation.

Do it properly and we only get 2 signings in at best in the time available , which leaves us weak and exposed still.

Need Ambrose to get fit :lux: :lux: :lux:

You say that, but I think what Dougie needs to do is spend money and bring in a proven, hard-working, goalscorer. He can look for loans as well but I think if ever there was a time to spend a million or so now is it.

But throwing money and the situation won't help. Proven goalscorers at this level simply do not want to come to a side that might be in league one next season.

What do you suggest? Trying to get loans and frees? We need to sign a goalscorer permanently for our side, something we haven't had since Clinton Morrison left.

I honestly don't know. It's a very difficult job for Dougie especially as its his first job. I think its a case of getting as many dirty ****s as we can whether they are from the championship or league one. We need a Clint Hill stylie LB and a Derry stylie DM - the kind of players that can make those dirty tackles that get the crowd onside and the momentum going.
