Based upon the comments of a Watford fan at work........no thanks! too slow and past it

He's all very well if you just want a centre back to mark Rooney completely out of an international World Cup finals match, but I don't think he's up to standard for your average Championship match.

Hey I think Matt Lawerence or even I could have done that based upon Rooney's efforts in this world cup

I wasn't commenting on your assessment, just simultaneously taking a swipe at Rooney and bigging up the best league division in the world ;)

Did well at the world cup and will most likely have offers from higher placed clubs than ours.

There's a reason why Watford released him...he's terrible. Granted he was good in the past, but there is a non financial reason why Watford released him.

I'd be very disappointed if we signed him. He may have done well against England but he wasn't great in the other games.

A good call.

30 years old is hardly 'past it'. A full international who played at the current World Cup and with extensive experience playing at our level and above. He'd make a very good signing for Palace.

If Watford don't want him , I'm positive we won't

Kirby
29-06-2010, 09:03 AM
Dunno what to make of this one.

When they mentioned he was on a free I thought "He sounds perfect for us". But like people are saying, he's been in and out of the Watford team and now they've released him.

If he was brought in as back-up I'd be happy, but I dont think he's what we need alongside Paddy as a first choice pairing. They would get raped by anyone with pace.

Has refused Watfords contract offer a year ago, was asking too much money, played out his final year but didn't look interested.

An enthused motivated DeMerit would be as assett but is that what we would get?

Looked pretty slow at the world cup, if anything we need more pace across the back four. Not less.

that ******* stupid phrase again. Mate if you or someone close to you had ever had this happen you wouldn't use the word rape in such a flippant context. Grow up and read a ******* thesaurus.

I think he's been pretty poor in the World Cup actually. Of course it's a bigger stage than the Championship and all that, but still not impressed. Also his wage demands would probably be higher than I'd expect us to pay for someone like him.

Stigma

Clarence Goodson (28) a better American option (although only a squad player in this world cup).
Plays for my Norwegian club IK Start. One of the best central defenders in the Norwegian league. Has a contract that ends in November. So not too expensive. Only problem would be if he would want to join us.

he's alright though - would cope in the championship if you ask me. Mind you i'd prefer Shittu

Hes on a free and he did just come of a contract at watford!! His wages should drop considerbly. 6k ish

Ok for championship level. He's not a world beater and as you saw in the WC games, he's a bit slow and needs a midfielder (Edu) to back him up or else he's toast.

Him and Claude Davis together. Has Warnock come back? Always thought Demerit was a big thug

If we get DeMerit in on a free, I reckon he could be a bit of a steal.

Oh shit, I do hope I have not offended anyone who has ever had anything stolen from them.

I personally was hoping this thread was dug up because we were in for him. But no :(

Would be a good signing.

Watford fans couldn't wait to get rid. He's past it, lumbering and more and more knackered.
Give Holland a chance !

Heard him on the radio last week. He's holding tight and waiting for something "special". Not in any rush and willing to wait till September/October, and willing to go anywhere in Europe. Reading between the lines of what he was saying, he won't be wanting to be playing for another club in the same league and roughly at the same level in the same part of the world as he's already been at. If we got him, it would just be because he's "settled" and not had any other offers, and if that's the case it wouldn't be till October ish

One thing to say that will convince all of you Demerit is a good signing: Claude Davis.

A fine player at this level, but I'd imagine he'd be looking for a hefty whack, I'm surprised someone hasn't snapped him up already.

Avoid. Too slow and was never really that good to begin with. If it wasn't for the fact that the next crop us GOOD U.S. defenders coming up are still too young, he would of never made it into the the US Mens national team

As an aside Lou, is the Gooch staying at Milan? Fine player when fit, I know he had a brief spell at the Toon, would do well over here I feel. (In England I mean, not for Palace!)

Yes he is staying at milan. They will use him as backup to Nesta & Thiago Silva.

The milan staff like him & it's expected he will play a reasonable amount of games now he is fit again.

brooklynlou

Gooch is in Milan and when fit is excellent. He's a few injuries lately but is fit of late. Will be the backup.

As for young defenders to keep an eye on, if you get a chance to see MLS games featuring the Red Bulls, keep an eye on Tim Ream. The kid is fantastic.

Considering how defense was a weak link for the US team, this kid will become a star come 2014 when the next world cup rolls around.

An update on the gooch.

The gooch is not going to get a minute of football at milan this season unless there's an injury crisis. He rarely makes the matchday squad.

The staff like him but he is 5 choice centre half & that doesn't look like changing.......a training ground punch up with the amazingly arrogant but good goalscorer imbrahimovic hasn't helped.
