This will be OK on a free. Although my Brentford supporting mate was disappointed. But we are Palace, and we're hardly going to tempt Buffon to sign as back-up. As long as he is decent enough to come in for Jules on the odd occassion that's all that matters IMO.

Good signing. We had to get a number 2 like this anyway, no point getting in a keeper who wants to be number one, who wouldnt want to sit it out on the bench. Good age as well, plenty of time for him to improve, picking up tips from Speroni along the way.

Its good to be linked with someone who could actually be able to challenge Jules for the jersey (and help make him get better) rather than make do with fairly awful keepers where I'd rather Jules played with a broken leg. Flinders, 500,000 up against the wall by Taylor

Didn't we have that with Flahavan last year?

I just don't see the point in having a proper number 2. Speroni has missed something like 1 game in the last 3 years, and an emergeny replacement goalkeeper can be drafted in pretty quickly if it is a major injury, if not I'm sure Mann can do okay for one game.

To be a pedant, Speroni missed two league games in the last two seasons. ;)

Cardiff away in 08/09 as his son was being born, and Newcastle at home last season because he'd nearly swallowed his tongue and died the previous Tuesday at Ipswich.

Ipswich had two young goalkeepers on their books prior to Richard Wrights arrival and one of them - possibly Price (pretty sure it was him) - played very well against us before at Selhurst.

Edit - it was Price, see here (http://www.cpfc.co.uk/page/MatchReport/0,,10323~34302,00.html). Ok, he let in two but...

Cort headed straight at Ipswich keeper Lewis Price from a Mark Kennedy free-kick

Carl Fletcher dragged a left-footed shot wide after good work from Shefki Kuqi and then a few minutes later the Welshman forced Price to tip a powerful drive over the bar.

before Kennedy shot straight at Price from the edge of the box.

Mark Hudson headed straight at Price from a corner and after 63 minutes Fletcher again tested Price, this time with a magnificent rising drive from distance.

Kuqi forced yet another save out of Price after a great surging run into the box and right foot shot

He was a busy man that afternoon.

Brentford fan here guys.

I've got to be honest, Price had some absolute howlers and lost his place pretty early on to Nikki Bull (who we released and is now at Wycombe). After that we got in the young Asenal gk Wczesny who was excellent and Price wasn't seen again.

Not thought highly of here and most fans wanted his loan terminated early but we couldn't as it was season long. Realise the financial situation you guys are in and that he is coming as back up, but if injuries force him into the side you have a guy who is a decent shop stopper, but is slow to come off his line, poor positioning and his catching was questionable at L1 level so can't see how it will be better at Championship.

Given how good Jules is I'm not sure that is reasonable as we'd need to have one of the best keepers in the Championship as backup. That isn't going to happen.
Flahavan barely got a sniff in the 2 seasons he was here, and udner Warnock hardly ever made the bench (even when there were 7). Hopefully Lewis Price won't be needed either but hopefully he'll be a reasonable back-up. While I saw him play for Ipswich at Selhurst 3 years ago, I remember nothing about that match apart from Tom Soares sending off for a grim 2 footed challenge (I digress though)
Welcome Lewis

Unfortunately I think Speroni will go at the end of his contract, so we may be on the lookout for a new number one this time next year.

Makes sense to have someone on board that's already established at the club who can step up to the plate.

Spoken to a Derby mate about him and he rates him. He originally went there as back up to Bywater, and apparently he didn't look bad when he came in and was unlucky to lose his place when they bought Roy Carroll.

Also when he was on loan at Luton he saved 2 penalties against Brighton to help them into the Johnstones Paint Final so that's got to be as good a reason as any to welcome him.

With respect guys, Julian Speroni was utter garbage when he joined palace and those of you who saw his howlers in the early days would have happily said goodbye to him at that time, but for the last four seasons he's been outstanding. Just goes to show what good professional training can do for a player!

He's another freebie with potential, so I just hope you all support our new #2 and don't break his confidence the first time he makes a cock-up (as he will), because none of us are perfect. He has many years ahead of him and will go on to be Julian's successor in time.

Lewis looks rather like he's on the way out now but he's been a great servant and an underrated contributor: whenever he's been called upon he's never let the team down. His personal highlight as a Palace player would be the win at Old Trafford, iirc.

Good luck to you Lewis. The Stags are only 7 points off the play-offs: a few clean sheets in the final five games and maybe, just maybe, you can help them there.

If so, goodbye Lewis. If not, um, ok.

As I watched Crawley most of this season their need is huge at the moment. No fit keeper at the club. Centre forward played in goal last home game after Jenson went off injured in first half.

What I have seen of Lewis Price in the 3 home games he played at Crawley is that League 1 is probably the extent of his abilities. I might be harsh but his positional play is not great and does not command the area. Shot stopping ok. It will be a good fit for Crawley for now but probably end of Palace career in the summer.
