PADDY McCarthy will celebrate being named new Palace captain by signing a fresh three year deal with the club.

The 27-year-old Irish defender has been chosen by manager George Burley to succeed Sean Derry as the Eagles on-field leader.

Burley believes the powerful centre half has all the attributes of an excellent captain.

"We're looking to make Paddy captain," confirmed the Eagles boss. "He's a real leader, and has a great presence on the pitch.

Paddy Mac is Magic,
He Wears the captains Band,
Goes in for Crunching tackles,
Which Strikers Cannot Stand.
He blocks them with his left foot,
He blocks them with his right.
And when hes playing Millwall,
They wouldnt score all night.

Well deserved. Came thundering back after a difficult season with injury.
Also one of the nicest guys you could hope to meet.
I'd make Julian vice captain.

Hardly a shock. There was nobody more qualified.

Tying him down to 2013 would be excellent too.

Hopefully the shoulder problems are behind him, as that has been the major stumbling block over the past two seasons.

Top player, will be very pleased with him as Captain, and if he signs a new deal!

Magnificent at the end of the season.

I still very much have the image of Paddy in the Service station on the way home from Sheffield. He was jumping up and down with all the fans singing 'we are staying up'. Will never forget that moment, he was ecstatic and going mental! Class, pure class!

Deffo right choice, though would have though Ambrose would have been close in the running.

Yeah he is a great bloke. I had the pleasure of partying with him and others in Patrick's later THAT night. Over the moon for him, i'm surprised he's not been looked at by others clubs. :lux:

He was linked with Sheffield United, but they appear to have blown all their West Ham/Tevez money and are now instead signing every out of contract player they can think of. Already this summer they've picked up Daniel Bogdanovic and re-signed Rob Kozluk (both left Barnsley), Leon Britton from Swansea, Steve Simonsen from Stoke and of course Ertl - all on free transfers.

Fantastic, we have a couple that we could do with signing new deals, hopefully this will encourage them to do so. I am also happy with him being named captain.

Spot on choice. He was a real leader in the back-line at the end of last season. I had the sense that it was a done deal at the Crawley game

I can see man hugs, like the one he gave Lawrence at Watford last year, all round if we win!

I would have preferred to see Danns given the armband if i'm honest, but I can't complain about Paddy being given it. Always vocal and always seems up for it.

That's great news. The Hilsborough memories are pretty good - there's also the Bramall Lane one two seasons back when he played with his shoulder heavily strapped - and scored.

Am privileged to be sponsoring his kit this coming season; Palace hero Paddy :p

Amusing now to think that Charlton fans genuinely thought they had got one over on us by exchanging Hudson for Paddy.

I'm delighted at this & his well deserved new contract, was worried that we might lack a little bite, but with Paddy & Barrett (who put in a good stint at Crawley) we'll be ok.

Hudson who?? We really did pretty well out of those transfers huh :-)

Paddy Mac was the only choice as captain, he will be superb. :p

Although we got him for a decent price your comment is a pretty strange one as Hudson went on a free amd then netted them a million - another example of recent managers making us go bankrupt by their inability to manage.

Luckily our new Scottish manager seems to be an astute transfer negotiator and is getting our key players on board, if only Clyne could get back from the U19s

I think paddy will have a good season this year. I just hope he stays injury free so he can lift the championship (or play off) trophy for us at the end of the season!

Macca's display at Wednesday is up there in the All-Time great centre-half performances for Palace. But, I tell you what, He was even better at Watford

Paddy's performance at Watford was one of the best i've ever seen in a Palace shirt. Considering the fact i think it was only his 2nd game back. It's like he never left. His introduction kept us up imo.

The image of him celebrating after the final whistle of the Wednesday game will always be remembered. Absolute Palace legend.
